ORR Success Criteria to enter SVP

1. LBTI performance requirementsa) LBTI demonstrates 12 zodi sensitivity (1 ,s single star measurement, PLRA zodi model)b) Credible plans documented to meet PLRA threshold performance requirements (6 zodi, 0.3

mJy) by end of science validation phase with low-medium riskc) In-guide plan and assumptions for SVP and HOSTS are documented and the science scope

and available nights are consistent

2. LBTI science data management planning and procedures meet all PLRA requirements

3. The necessary interferometer operations plans and procedures are complete, documented and in place, and under configuration mgmt

4. The necessary pipeline processing algorithms, plans and procedures are complete, documented and in place, and under config. mgmt

5. The necessary staffing is in place and training has taken place6. The required actions from previous reviews have been addressed7. Project risks are documented and acceptable8. During SVP, UA is ready to assume responsibility for LBTI operations and data

delivery; and NExSci is ready to assume responsibility for archive

HOSTS Survey

10The technical data in this document is controlled under the U.S. Export Regulations, release to foreign persons may require an export authorization.

ExoPlanet Exploration Program

PLRA Performance Goals

• For full success, the LBTI project shall:– Survey the exozodiacal flux of 50 nearby stars with a 1s noise

equivalent corresponding to 3 times the signal due to the zodiacal dust in our own planetary system (3 zodi) (HOSTS survey)

– Complete the HOSTS survey within 4 years after completion of commissioning (integration and testing [I & T])

ExoPlanet Exploration Program

PLRA Instrument Requirements

• The threshold performance requirements to be met by the LBTI instrument shall include:1. Photometric sensitivity (1s ): 0.3 mJy, over bandpass 10-12.5

(standard N’ filter), to be reached during the elementary per-star observing sequence

2. Calibrated null stability (1s) of 1.5x10 -4 (planned null depth 1x10-3),2 to be reached for a full calibration cycle.

• The elementary observing sequence includes measurements to calibrate the background and provide flux normalization, and is expected to last about 30 min with 30% duty cycle, resulting in about 10 min of integration time. A full calibration cycle will typically include three such observing sequences of the target star, bracketed by observing sequences on calibrator stars.

Photometric Sensitivity

• Measured performance vs requirement– Current metric plot

• What is it• How is it measured• Error bars, repeatability, accuracy

• If Baseline requirements are met, great.• If baseline requirements are not met but threshold requirements

are met, what is the plan to get to baseline requirement• If threshold requirements are not met (but close), why is it ok?
