Title : A Green Precipitation Reaction
Beginning Question:
1. Determine limiting reactant and percent yield.
Safety PrecautionSodium carbonate is a skin irritant and should be handled with gloves and wash off if come in contact with skin.Chemicals
1.0 g of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)30 mL of 1M zinc acetate (Zn (O2CCH3)2)
Apparatus100-mL measuring cylinder 50-mL beaker50-mL conical flask filter funnelanalytical balance weigh paperfilter paper
Procedure: 1. Weigh1.0 g of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) into a 50 mL beaker and weigh
the mass of filter paper. Record the mass of sodium carbonate and filter paper in the table below.
2. By using a measuring cylinder, add 15 mL of water into the 50 mL beaker to dissolve the solid to make an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. Label beaker A.
3. Add 30 mL 1.0M of lead acetate solution into beaker A and stir using a glass rod.
4. Filter out the precipitate using filter funnel and let it dry.5. Weigh the product and record in the given table.
Reaction equation:Na2CO3 + Zn (O2CCH3)2 → 2 Na(O2CCH3) + ZnCO3 (precipitate)

lead carbonate (exp)
Calculation 1. Given the experimental value: Number of mol (Zn(O2CCH3)2) = 0.03 mol Mass of Na2CO3 = 1.0g Number of mol Na2CO3 = 2. The reactant is in excess = _________________ Therefore the limiting reactant for the reaction = 3. Mass theoretical value product of ZnCO3 = 2.518g
Mass actual value of ZnCO3 collected from exp = _________
Percent yield of zinc carbonate for the reaction= Mass actual X 100 = Mass theoretical Claim

1. Predict the products for the following reactions
a. Sodium chloride and silver nitrate
b. calcium chloride and sodium carbonate
2. In the experiment that you have done, “ A Green Precipitate Reaction” , name the principles of Green Chemistry (1-12) used. Refer hand out given.
Exercise :
1. Consider the following reaction:
3 NH4NO3 + Na3PO4 (NH4)3PO4 + 3 NaNO3
Assuming we start with 30 grams of ammonium nitrate and 50 grams of sodium phosphate.
a) Which of the reagents is the limiting reagent?
b) What is the maximum amount of each product that can be formed?
c) How much of the other reagent is left over after the reaction is complete?
2) Consider the following reaction:
3 CaCO3 + 2 FePO4 Ca3(PO4)2 + Fe2(CO3)3
Assuming we start with 100 grams of calcium carbonate and 45 grams of iron (III) phosphate.
a) Which of the reagents is the limiting reagent?
b) What is the maximum amount of each product that can be formed?
c) How much of the other reagent is left over after the reaction is complete
