1969My first encounter with a body of Eduardo Paolozzi’s sculpture was when he was invited artist in the SSA exhibition. Included was Gexhi, (1967), given by Paolozzi to the SSA and subsequently purchased by Ian McKenzie Smith for Aberdeen Art Gallery. The 100 sheets from Moonstrips Empire News, (1967), published by Alecto and screen printed at Kelpra

were projected in the gallery.

1972Introduced by its curator Robin Spencer to Paolozzi’s Krazy Kat Archive at that time held at the

University of St. Andrews

1982A meeting with Isobel Spencer (Johnstone) in her Edinburgh kitchen to discuss her catalogue essay for the exhibition 4 North East Artists at the Fruitmarket Gallery was enhanced by the presence of Paolozzi’s screenprint Who’s Afraid of Sugar Pink and Lime Green, (1972), published by Bernard

Jacobson, printed at Advanced Graphics.

1984Eduardo Paolozzi, Recurring Themes was presented by the Scottish Sculpture Trust at the Royal Scottish Academy for the Edinburgh International Festival with a publication

edited by Robin Spencer.

1985A first meeting with Joe Studholme of Editions Alecto in London. This acquaintance was renewed at

the opening of Editions Alecto, A Fury of Prints, at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, (2003).

2001Mark Hunter found an empty portfolio partially buried in a Dundee basement. Some years later this was identified as having contained the twelve screenprints of Eduardo Paolozzi’s As Is When,

(1964-5), published by Alecto and printed by Kelpa.

2016After identifying the folio it was decided to initiate a project to produce twelve new prints for the folio in response to Paolozzi. This is nearing completion with six artists making two prints each:

Delia Baillie, Paul Harrison, Mark Hunter, Rachel Lee, Arthur Watson & Peter Yearworth.

From my initial idea of an image on one sheet and text on the other my response to the project has expanded to, at time of writing, five editioned images and three editioned texts along with some fifteen unique variations, 3 of which are shown here. A further offshoot from the text sheets was the double print, A Gate to Metal Hell, Verso & Recto. Drawing from Paolozzi’s title The Metalization of a Dream the text explores various genres of metal music while the images reference recently discovered early prints based on weaving patterns fused with the mouse head

appropriated from Paolozzi’s appropriation printed on the As Is When portfolio.
