Art in Bloom

A committee of Lewes in Bloom, Art in Bloom’s mission is to “enhance the beautification and cultural environment of

Historic Lewes and the community at large by means of public art.”

ORIGINSThe concept of Art in Bloom emerged from the

America in Bloom competition in Holland, Michigan in 2015 when Lewes in Bloom

brought home the Circle of Champions award.

A VISION WAS BORN

Warren and Jane Ellan Golde and Linda and Dennis Davison

returned home with the idea of placing art in the public parks of

Lewes after seeing beautiful sculptures on the streets of Holland and at the Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids,

Michigan.

It was a Long and Winding Road leading up to the installation of The Silent Sentinels at the Trailhead near the Lewes Public Library

DEDICATION of The Silent SentinelsThe City of Lewes had procedures for placing benches or planting trees, but there were no guidelines for Public Art. - An ad hoc committee was appointed to develop a Public Art Policy. - Yet another ad hoc committee was formed to review the request to place a single kinetic sculpture in Otis Smith Park. - Finally, it was decided that the City would collaborate with Art in Bloom to place 3 kinetic sculptures by Lyman Whitaker.

An Important Step toward legitimizing Public Art for Public Places in Lewes

Responsibility of the PAC Committee• To interface effectively with arts initiatives within the City of

Lewes including projects of Art in Bloom/Lewes in Bloom (internationally recognized for their art initiative efforts), public-private partnerships and government entities such as the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDot) and the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) according to the guidelines set forth in the Public Art Policy.

• To develop a long range plan and vision that is consistent with all arts interests and is inclusive rather than exclusive.

Lewes Junction: A Library-Arts Project

• 40’ long x 14’ wide structure resembling the old Lewes Train Station - to hide the existing mechanicals

• Murals on 3 sides, both realistic and whimsical• A “Book Wall” screening the inverters

Combining the concept of a train station and the library as gateways, this outdoor art

project will enhance the Library as a cultural door to the city through imaginative works of

art both historic and whimsical. Once completed, the structure will represent a train station, and the artwork will provide a visual

legacy of Lewes, incorporating any number of landmarks, milestones and significant events.

A library and a train station, especially an historic one, have several things in common. They both:• are information depots…• provide passage to adventures and knowledge… • become doorways to connections and learning…• act as gateways to culture...• represent the future as well as the past… • symbolize the heart of the city…• make connections, capture historic moments, and provide a

place to meet…• allow time travel to the past and the future.
