It has been an outstanding year for Bodwéwadmi Ktëgan (Potawatomi Farm) being able to provide Forest County Potawatomi (FCP) tribal members and departments with healthy

protein options along with fresh produce for everyday meals. The farm is becoming a self-sustaining operation, with meat sales rising and the variety of farm animals expanding.

The farm, located in Laona, was purchased by FCP in the late 1990s. Cattle were the original plan, but it was later decided to raise European red deer. The Red Deer Ranch housed red deer while providing a sustainable amount of venison for the tribal community.

A feasibility study was done in late 2016 leading to a change in focus for the farm. This new plan started with cattle and swine, eventually adding chickens to the picture. The new farm name, Bodwéwadmi Ktëgan, is now

home to 23 cattle, 100 swine, 150 laying hens, 300 meat chickens, bees, and their newest addition — 39 bison — added in February 2019.

Bison is a lean, heart-healthy meat option that compliments the other healthy proteins they offer. Bison had a historical significance as they were a source of meat for the tribe many years ago.

The cattle, along with the bison, are grass-fed, and the chickens and pigs are pasture-raised. Grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork is a great source of protein which contains five times more omega 3s than grain-fed beef! Omega 3s can help your health by reducing the risk for heart disease and reduce

stiffness and pain. Conjugate linoleic acids (CLAs) are another abundant resource in grass-fed beef. CLAs can reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Grass-fed beef also contains higher amounts of Vitamin A and E which are great for our bodies.

The farm produces a wide variety of seasonal vegetables and fruits including: beets, peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, rutabaga, kale, green beans, and cabbage. The new aquaponics facility will be able to produce lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers year-round. Aquaponics is a system where waste produced by farmed fish supplies nutrients for

plants to be grown, which, in turn, helps the plants purify the water.

The newest structure to the farm is the Wash N’ Pack Building, which is where all of the harvested produce from the farm is washed and packaged in a commercial kitchen. While some fresh produce is taken to tribal departments, other produce can be preserved in the kitchen by canning/ freezing to use throughout the winter months. Large meals for events will also be prepared in the commercial kitchen.

The public can purchase all of the Bodwéwadmi Ktëgan’s products, along with souvenirs, at its storefront located at 3389 County Hwy. H in Laona,

Wis. The variety of products offered include hamburger, steaks, bacon, pork chops, hams and much more. Snack stick flavors consist of old-fashioned, cheddar, jalapeño and cheddar, landjaeger, and a customer favorite — honey barbeque pineapple. Beef jerky comes in three flavors: buttery prime rib, cracked pepper and garlic, and hickory. Snack sticks, jerky, and bacon are available at both Carter and Stone Lake C-Stores. Please call (715) 889-2335 for a complete list of inventory, or check online at lnr.fcpotawatomi.com/natural-resource/bodwewadmi-ktegan.

Please join the FILM Program for its 3rd Annual Short Film Festival on Sept. 28, 2019, held at the Forest County Potawatomi Executive Building (5416 Everybody’s Rd., Crandon, WI). Check its website at fcpotawatomi.com and Facebook page for exact times. The event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the FCP FILM program. There will be a limited number of entries from youth from the FILM program and from outside filmmakers (new this year). An awards ceremony will be at the end of the day from 4 to 5 p.m. The festival will feature numerous short films with genres ranging from comedic to horror. Refreshments will be available.

The FILM program sprouted from a grant given by the Association of Native Americans

to encourage youth to showcase and share the experiences of the film production with the community. An overview of the FILM program comes from Dave Herkert, FILM coordinator: “The program’s design is to educate tribal and community youth in film and video productions, giving them independence and inspiring leadership as well as generating a group of future mentors to complete the cycle of fostering the next generation in expressing their creativity, skills and giving a voice to the youth in the community.” Currently, there are 14 students involved with FILM, totalling 49 in the last two years. If you are an area youth interested in joining the FILM program, please contact Dave Herkert at (715) 478-4963 or [email protected].

In late summer, the Midwest’s #1 Entertain-

ment Destination will open its second hotel tower, bringing the popular hotel’s room and suite count to 500. The 180,000 square feet expan-sion to Potawatomi Hotel & Casino turns the property into one of Milwaukee’s largest hotel event venues, with over 75,000 square feet of full-service event space just steps away from nonstop

gaming, dining and luxury accommodations. As a major event destination, Potawatomi offers a world of possibilities to hosts, with professional catering managers available to customize every detail, and flexible rooms ranging from intimate meeting spaces with amazing city views to an event center that can fit up to 3,000. Prioritizing the experience of guests, the new tower adds nearly 60 expan-

sive suites for visitors from across the region and beyond. The first-floor Ember Salon & Spa will offer a variety of massage, hair, nail and skincare treatments for both men and women. Overall, the expansion project represents an $80 million investment in the Milwaukee community, and is expected to create 50 permanent hotel jobs.

A History of Entertainment

Potawatomi first came to Mil-waukee in 1991 as Potawatomi Bingo. Opening its doors to a line of people that stretched around the building, the modest bingo hall was an instant success. In 2000, Potawatomi expanded by replacing the orig-inal pole barn structure with a state-of-the-art, 250,000 square feet casino. Potawatomi Bingo Casino became the most visited entertainment destination in Wisconsin, offering gaming, full-service dining and a live-per-formance venue to millions of guests annually. In 2008, the property tripled in size in order to meet the growing demand for the brand of entertainment Potawatomi delivers. Additions included more gaming options, several new restaurants, a center bar, an off-track bet-ting room, a poker room and tens-of-thousands of square feet of meeting space. With the completion of a 381-room hotel in 2014, the property became a regional entertainment destina-tion.

Potawatomi Hotel & Casino Today

Potawatomi offers guests over 150,000 square feet of 24/7 gaming space, with more than 2,500 slot machines on the casino floor. New machines in the latest themes are added each month, with denomina-tions ranging from $0.01 to $100. The property features nearly 100 table games, a 1,440-seat Bingo Hall with daily payouts averaging more than $75,000, an action-packed Off-Track Betting Room and a luxurious 20-table Poker Room. The competitive Fire Keeper’s Club loyalty program offers promotions, exclusive offers and much, much more. When it’s time for a break from gaming, visitors can enjoy an amazing variety of food at one of the seven unique restaurants on the

restaurant, is set to reopen in early fall with an all-new design. Next summer, the 2020 Democratic National Conven-tion is coming to Milwaukee, and Potawatomi Hotel & Ca-sino is one of the key partners

property, or watch live musical and comedic performances at The Northern Lights Theater. When guests decide to call it a night, they can rest and relax at Potawatomi’s 19-story luxury hotel, which boasts a modern décor and floor-to-ceiling win-dows with breathtaking views. At Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, visitors can enjoy endless en-tertainment all under one roof.

Community Investment

Potawatomi is committed to investing in Milwaukee. In 1991, Potawatomi Bingo em-ployed around 200 people. To-day, the property is one of the top-25 employers in the Mil-waukee area, employing nearly 2,700. Eighty-five percent of these team members live in Milwaukee County, with 65 percent living in the city itself. More than half of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino team members are people of color. Since 1994, the casino has contributed over $19 million to local children’s organizations through its signa-ture charitable initiative, Heart of Canal Street. Additionally, the Forest County Potawatomi has played a vital role in the cleaning and revitalization of the Menomonee Valley since its return 28 years ago, when the area was suffering from severe social, economic and environmental hardship. The tribe’s foundation has given tens of millions to hundreds

of organizations in order to help those faced with difficult economic challenges.

Looking Forward

Potawatomi has always aimed to provide the best in gaming, dining and entertain-ment. From its origins as a simple bingo hall, the property has grown into the premier en-tertainment destination in the Midwest. Today, Potawatomi Hotel & Casino continues its history of investing in Mil-waukee. Construction of the second tower of the hotel will be completed in July, with the grand opening in August. Great things are happening at the Forest County Potawatomi (FCP) Health & Wellness Center!

The Imaging and Community Health departments have recently been awarded national accreditation from leaders in their respective fields.

In February 2019, FCP Health Division Imaging was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Mammogra-phy is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseas-es in women.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Pa-rameters and Technical Standards after a

peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, per-sonnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

“FCP Imaging Department mammog-raphers Julie Burt and Miranda Royce have and continue to do an exceptional job of both clinical and regulatory work for FCP and our recent ACR request was not an easy task given the relatively low volume. Congratulations,” said Dr. Samir Kulkarni, MD, Aspirus Mammography Lead Interpreting Radiologist.

The FCP Community Health Depart-ment achieved national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation

Board (PHAB) for five years in March 2019. This milestone accomplishment is official recognition that FCP Community Health meets or exceeds the rigorous standards established by the non-profit, non-govern-mental PHAB. The national accreditation program works to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and ultimately transforming the quality and performance of the nation’s state, local, tribal, and territorial public health departments. FCP Community Health is one of fewer than 300 health departments that have thus far achieved accreditation through PHAB since the organization launched in 2011, and the third American Indian Health Department in the country to receive this honor.

The national accreditation program, jointly supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sets standards against which the nation’s nearly 3,000 governmental public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and perfor-mance. To receive accreditation, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer- reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds a set of quality standards and measures. Accreditation means that FCP Community Health is committed to continuous quality improvement so that we can meet the FCP community’s needs as effectively as possi-ble. PHAB accreditation demonstrates our accountability and credibility to everyone with whom we work.

“The Forest County Potawatomi Community Health Department joins the growing ranks of accredited health departments in a strong commitment to their public health mission,” said PHAB President and CEO Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN. “The peer-review process provides valuable feedback to inform health de-partments of their strengths and areas for improvement, so that they can better pro-tect and promote the health of the people they serve in their communities. Residents of a community served by a nationally- accredited health department can be assured that their health department has demonstrated the capacity to protect and

promote the health of that community.”Congratulations to all the men and

always been our number one goal, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts.
