AUSTRALIAN FIRST SUSTAINABILTY ICC Sydney will operate with optimal resource efficiency because of its smart design strategies, such as the integration of cost efficient and renewable technologies.

ICC Sydney will be home to the first community-funded solar energy project of its kind in Australia, allowing members of the public to buy shares in a social venture that will own the building’s solar array. The solar array, owned by Sydney Renewable Power Company, is being erected on the roof of ICC Sydney to generate power for the venue. It’s expected to produce approximately five per cent of the energy required for the venue, which is equivalent to powering more than 100 homes every year.

ACCREDITATIONS ICC Sydney is being developed in accordance with a number of internationally recognised management system standards. Elements of the design and its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework will be subject to third party certification such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), International Management System Standard ISO14001:2015 and Green Globe Certification.

Darling Harbour Live, the venue’s delivery consortium, is currently registered with the internationally recognised US Green Building Council for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and ICC Sydney is set to achieve a Gold Certification.

ENCOURAGING INDUSTRY SUSTAINABILITYSustainability is a business imperative. ICC Sydney is set to establish benchmarks and shape the future of the events industry. With this in mind, a key focus for ICC Sydney is to work closely with clients to challenge, encourage and educate in order to execute their events in the most sustainable way possible.

ICC Sydney will work closely with clients to help make sustainable choices during the event planning process. Clients will have the option of digital signage instead of paper, recyclable material booths over one use materials, and utilising the on site technology available.

ICC Sydney will also take the initiative to make meaningful social connections on a variety of fronts, including enhancing the intellectual capital of the host community, food redistribution projects, in-house training schemes, connecting schools and community groups with leaders of industry, innovation and professional development and distributing surplus satchels and gifts on to charities and organisations in need.

ICC Sydney will drive innovation, forward thinking, long term planning, ethical and equal practices, community engagement and environmentally friendly operations.

ICC Sydney is a socially responsible and environmentally sensitive convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct. The venue has set key targets and initiatives to assist its efforts:

BUILDING• A centralised main plant is expected to save 20% of greenhouse gas

emissions compared to the Building Code of Australia standard.

• Design is targeting a 14 per cent reduction in potable water use compared to a similarly sized venue (reference to Australian Standard AS/NZ:500.1.2003 100 per cent mains water).

• All toilet tap fittings are sensor controlled and have flow regulators to minimise the amount of water that is used.

• All lighting in the facility has motion sensors that will turn the lights off when there is no activity in that particular area.

ENVIRONMENT & PUBLIC DOMAIN• A renewed and upgraded public domain will see a reconfiguration

of Tumbalong Park, providing an additional 3,000sqm of green space.

• The exhibition car park will feature 20 electric car charging stations.

• A rooftop garden for kitchen herbs will be located on the event deck and will also add to the venue’s green space.

• Improved east west pedestrian connections between Darling Harbour and neighbouring precincts of Chinatown, Town Hall, Central, Ultimo and Pyrmont.

• A new 680m long, 20m wide Boulevard connecting Darling Harbour to Quay Street.

INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABILITY INITATIVES

• Partnering with local, regional, ethical suppliers to ensure nutrients are maximised in meals and ethical standards are underscored.

• E-water, a cutting-edge technology that reduces the use of astringent, non-biodegradable, potentially carcinogenic chemical cleaners will be used in kitchens to create a safer, healthier work environment for staff.

• Table linens, including tablecloths and napkins, will be presented ‘naked’, using soft cloth napkins, instead of using starched, chemical cleaners and bleaches for banquets and events.

RECYCLING• The use of rainwater harvested from the exhibition building

roof will be used for the venue’s toilets (more than 1,000) and irrigation of external landscaping along the Boulevard.

• With the focus on reducing surplus materials ending in waste, ICC Sydney is committed to a general waste recycling target of 75 per cent and an organic waste target of 90 per cent.

• Waste cooking oil from kitchens will be recycled by waste services provider AUSCOL, a specialist in the environmentally responsible recycling of used cooking oils and fats.

• Procuring sustainable alternatives to plastic, paper and Styrofoam by introducing biodegradable food packaging that will be compostable and products composed of natural fibres that are rapidly renewable.

• Embrace suppliers that subscribe to the Australian Packaging Covenant to reduce excess packaging, with a view to phase out styrofoam packaging.
