6 HOPE VISITOR GUIDE 2011/ HOPE STANDARD
1. Natural WondersThe scenic setting of Hope & beyond guarantees many natural wonders: the swirling whitewater that challenges river rafters on the mighty Fraser River; the grandeur of the Fraser Canyon that unfolds along the scenic Trans-Canada Highway; the carpets of wildfl owers in Manning Provincial Park; the many trails that take hikers of all ages and abilities to myriad hidden spots of natural beauty in and around Hope; are but a few.
2. Engineering WondersThe rugged terrain of Hope & beyond required great ingenuity from its pioneers. Today you can marvel at the four Kettle Valley Railway tunnels that cut a straight line through the rugged Coquihalla Canyon; the Alexandra Bridge that still hangs suspended over the churning waters of the Fraser River; and the Airtram and International Fishways at the aptly named Hell’s Gate.
3. Artistic WondersWhen a tool of industry is placed into the hands of an artist, a raw material can be transformed into artwork. Hope has become the Chainsaw Carving Capital with more than 50 wood sculptures placed throughout the town. In much the same way, a master horticulturalist has transformed a farm at Bridal Falls into the 27-acre showpiece of Minter Gardens. Further evidence of local artistic talent is found at local art galleries and studios.
4. Cultural WondersThe Sto:lo and Nlaka’pamux people have lived in the region of Hope & beyond for thousands of years and today you can witness their cultures thriving and succeeding at First Nations celebrations, the Tuckkwhiowhum Village near Boston Bar and at various aboriginal businesses.
5. Mysterious WondersEach fall thousands of salmon return to the streams of their birth and in January 1965 an entire mountain split in two and collapsed onto the valley fl oor below resulting in The Hope Slide. These are two examples of the mysterious forces of Mother Nature at work in the area of Hope & beyond.
6. Historic WondersEarly settlers have left reminders of their efforts on our landscape. From the early trade routes, like the 1849 HBC Trail, that now offers challenging hiking experiences, to the beautiful architecture of Christ Church Anglican National Historic Site and Saint John The Divine Church at the Yale Heritage Site, there are many places in Hope & beyond to relive pioneer experiences.
7. Cinematic WondersWith all that Hope & beyond has to offer it should be no surprise that Hollywood has been here to fi lm enduring cinematic stories. Visit the famous Rambo: “First Blood” fi lm sites, where Sylvester Stallone starred as John Rambo in the cult classic. Lesser known fi lms have also been fi lmed here, including “Shoot to Kill” starring Sidney Portier and “Hope Springs”, starring Colin Firth.

8 HOPE VISITOR GUIDE 2011/ HOPE STANDARD
Take the family for a gentle bike ride along the ‘Town of Hope’ circle route and enjoy our small town, quiet streets and wonderful views.
Park your vehicle at the Hope Visitor Centre then head for Memorial Park in the downtown core, where you can explore the Japanese Friendship Gardens and the kids can check-out the large playground. The circle route then includes a visit to Christ Church Anglican National Historic Site before you proceed along the Fraser River. As you ride under the Hope-Fraser Bridge, take a look to your left and you will see a unique view of the bridge as the lower level was constructed to carry the now abandoned Kettle Valley Railway.
This quiet roadway leads to another beautiful viewpoint of the Fraser River,
then meets-up a few blocks later with the Rotary Nature Trail at the mouth of the Coquihalla River. From here you can choose to ride the trail or follow Seventh Avenue.
After the two route options reunite, the circle route continues past the Hope Recreation Centre, which is home to the Hope Arena, the Dan Sharrers Aquatic Centre, and the library. Behind the centre is a skatepark, which is suitable for BMX bikes. Carry on up to and along Old Hope Princeton Way then down Third Avenue, to where you will fi nd yourself once again near the Hope Visitor Centre.
The Visitor Centre has this and other family-friendly cycling routes available on pre-printed maps.

Imagine an airplane fl ying for more than seven hours. . . without an engine and in the power of the wind alone.
That’s the thrill behind glider fl ying for the more than 40 pilots who make Hope Regional Airpark their home base.
Hope is an ideal location for glider fl ying because westerly winds blow from the Fraser Valley and rise when they reach the mountains. Mount Hope is known for creating strong upward columns of air
which can keep a glider airborne for as long as six or seven hours.
From April to October, visitors can catch a glimpse of the gliders soaring by the mountains over town.
The pilots are members of the Hope Gliding Centre (HGC). HGC owns two tow planes and six gliders plus offers week and weekend training programs.
20- 30 minute guided fl ights are available for $150.
Take Flood-Hope exit (#165) off Trans-Canada Hwy, just west of downtown Hope, then follow the signs to the Airpark. Park on the service road near the white hangar at the east end. Report to the blue clubhouse to make arrangements for your fl ight.
You can reach HGC at 604-869-7211 or [email protected].

In Hope and the Fraser Canyon there are hundreds of geocache sites to be discovered, ranging from simple to extreme.
“Geocaching” is one of the fastest-growing pastimes today – involving treasure hunting, orienteering, the use of
personal GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver units and the internet to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”). A geocacher will place a waterproof container, containing a log book and some sort of treasure. Cache’s coordinates are noted, along with other
details of the location, then posted online. Other geocachers obtain the coordinates from the internet and seek out the cache.
Geocachers are free to take objects from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value, so there is treasure for the next person to fi nd.
Just as historic gold miners combed the banks of the Fraser River searching for a bonanza, today’s visitors to Hope and the Fraser Canyon can experience gold-panning for themselves.
A good spot for the novice gold panner is at the mouth of the Coquihalla River at Seventh Avenue and Wardle Street in Hope. Other areas in the Fraser Canyon include Waterfront Park in Yale and a panning reserve in Lytton.
Many areas of the river are restricted to gold panning. Panning is not permitted in provincial parks, native reserves or on previously staked claims.
To start, fi ll the pan with gravel then submerge it in slow-moving water. Keep the pan in the water, tip it slightly away and swirl the mixture. Lighter material will be the fi rst to fall out, leaving behind the gold. A common novice mistake is to try panning river sand. Bigger gold nuggets can be found in gravel or coarse sand.

Hope’s hiking trailsFrom a casual stroll along the banks of the Coquihalla River to a long trek along the Trans-Canada Trail, Hope is a great place to start a walk in the woods.
Hope’s popular Rotary Nature Trail along the Coquihalla River is an easy 20-minute stroll. Parking is available at the trailhead off Wardle Street where the Coquihalla River joins the Fraser River. In the fall, spawning salmon can be seen as they return to local streams.
The Trans-Canada Trail passes directly through downtown Hope from the Visitor Centre to the Hope Recreation Complex. Follow the trail through the wooded area over the bridge on Kawkawa Lake Rd. to the Thacker Regional Park on Union Bar Rd. The trail then follows the old Kettle Valley railway all the way to the spectacular Othello Tunnels.
Another popular trail within town is the Mt. Hope Lookout Trail. This short hike is a great workout and leads to a breathtaking view of Hope.
Manning Park, east of Hope on Hwy. #3, offers 290-km of trails for all abilities. The Rein Orchid Trail is a delightful “walk in the park”. The trail passes through a mature spruce forest and
features the White Rein Orchid and other bog fl ora in June-July.
The Lightning Lake Loop is a 9-km round trip, or by adding the Chain Trail, can be as long as 24-km.
Lightning Lake is where you access trail heads to Mt. Frosty, the highest peak in the park, or the breathtaking Skyline Trails.
Some of the most popular trails are those in the sub-alpine meadows where wild fl owers bloom in spectacular colour. These trails vary from a 1-km stroll on the Paintbrush Nature Trail to a 42-km multi-day adventure on the Heather Trail.
Skagit Valley Provincial Park is located southwest of Hope and is accessed via Silver Skagit Road from Silver Creek. This park offers visitors a 1-hr. leisurely walk on the Chittenden Meadow Self-Guiding Interpretive Trail as well as other lengthy hikes. You can follow the 26-km Skagit River Trail that takes you to Sumallo Grove Picnic area.

HBC 1849 trailEver wonder why Hope exists, and how it received its name?
In 1848, the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) built Fort Hope as a key transfer point along a new trail that would link the Fraser River to Fort Kamloops. The new fort represented HBC’s best “Hope” of replacing fur trading routes lost to the Americans after the 49th Parallel border became established in 1846. The trail was completed in 1849 and served as HBC’s critical fur trade route between BC’s coast and interior for more than a decade.
From 1849 to 1860, “brigades” comprised of hundreds of men and pack animals carried many tons of cargo over this rugged mountain trail. Valuable furs from BC’s Interior traveled west on the trail, where they were loaded onto boats at Fort Hope, then shipped downriver to Fort Langley and world markets beyond. On the return trip, trade goods and supplies were carried east over the Cascades to re-supply interior forts. The trail played an important role in the early development of British Columbia and Canada.
The HBC Trail was originally a First Nations trail used for hunting and east-west trade. An Upper Similkameen chief at Otter Lake named “Blackeye” described the route to A.C. Anderson (an HBC employee) in
1846. Stó:lo and Nlaka’pamux guides helped locate the route from Fort Hope, over Manson’s Ridge and Mount Davis, connecting with Blackeye’s Trail across the Tulameen Plateau.
The HBC Trail of 1849 is now a designated “Heritage Trail” protected by the province. A local non-profi t society, the Hope Mountain Centre, has re-opened the trail for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Improvements will continue in 2011, with new campsites built along the route. Funding comes from the New Pathways to Gold Society and Recreation Sites and Trails BC, with the support of a passionate group of volunteers.

Whether you are looking for a day of top-notch bar fi shing or just a great family fi shing day, the region offers great lakes, rivers and streams.
Last year saw a record-breaking sockeye salmon season with an estimated 30 million sockeye returning to B.C. rivers – the largest sockeye run in 97 years. Sports fi shers took full advantage of the opportunity, lining the banks of the Fraser River at every available access point. Sockeye salmon run throughout the summer, spring salmon run
from May to December, and pink salmon
run in the fall.
The Fraser is also known for its sturgeon
fi shing with many guides operating fi shing
excursions within our region.
In Manning Park, a chain of four small lakes,
dubbed the Lightning Lakes, are a great
spot for families to fi sh for trout from shore or
canoe. in Hope, Kawkawa Lake is a popular
Kokanee fi shing spot. Lake of the Woods,
just north of Hope, is stocked annually with
rainbow trout. Jones, Ross and Silver lakes
are all popular spots for wilderness camping
and fi shing. In the Fraser Canyon, the three
remote Nahatlatch lakes offer some great
fi shing opportunities.
For the fl y fi sher, the Skagit River is
considered by some to be the best dry
fl y stream in the province. Silver Creek is
steelhead and rainbow trout-heaven and
the Coquihalla River offers steelhead and
Dolly Varden.

Looking to see a wonder of nature in action? Then look not further than Thacker Regional Park’s many spawning channels. In the fall, visitors have the luxury of seeing the salmon spawn close-up from the observation decks.
Meandering pathways, off the parking lot and washroom facility, head upstream along the Delair spawning channel and downstream to where Kawkawa Creek fl ows into the Coquihalla River.
The upstream pathway, which winds around Thacker Marsh, is a perfect location to view spawning salmon and beaver lodges.
Late September marks the beginning of the salmon run, as Chum salmon make their annual return. Coho salmon are seen in late October. An interpretive sign
explaining the salmon’s lifecycle can be viewed at the site.
Visitors are asked to refrain from disturbing the fi sh, a dog splashing into a stream, and a thrown rock or stick could affect their spawning.
To fi nd the spawning site from downtown Hope, turn right off Wallace St. onto Sixth Ave. Pass the arena and ball park, turn left on Kawkawa Lake Rd. You will cross a bridge over the Coquihalla River. Once across, immediately turn left and watch for Thacker Regional Park signs. A small parking lot on your right accommodates visitors.
At the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, visitors can also observe the summer run of Steelhead trout migrating up June, July and August.

The many raftable rivers in Hope and the Fraser Canyon offer full-spectrum adventure, from wild to mild.
Three types of raft trips are offered by licensed operators: 1) Paddle rafts require your assistance manouevring through rapids 2) Oar rafts are similar to paddle rafts except the guide has large oars that propel the raft. 3) Motorized rafts are used on rivers such as the Thompson and Fraser.
The Thompson River from Spences Bridge to Lytton is the most popular rafting trip in BC. Huge roller-coaster-sized waves make the Thompson trip an unbeatable adventure.
The Nahatlatch River is a premier whitewater run. If you like heart-thumping, adrenalin-charged
excitement, then Nahatlatch is sure to please. The Nahatlatch drops continuously for 12 km with rapids such as Meat Grinder, Twisted Sister, and Lose Yer Lunch.
The Coquihalla River just outside Hope offers rafters a unique view of the Cascade mountains as they plunge through almost continuous rapids: Committed, Boulder Drop and Initiation, name only a few.
The Fraser River from Boston Bar to Yale offers incredible scenery and a chance to raft the famous Hell’s Gate. If you prefer easy fl oating, try Yale to Hope or the Harrison River. These trips are ideal for young children and the “young at heart” – a perfect family outing.

After one of the fi rst major environmental battles in BC, Hope became the gateway to a 27,948-ha. park. Visitors can explore the diverse ecosystems within the Skagit Valley.
The story dates back to 1906, when Seattle City Light began planning to dam the Skagit River on the U.S. side. Curly Chittenden, was a BC logger, who later worked for Seattle City Light supervising operations in the area. He and some co-workers recognized their task would destroy wildlife, unique fl ora and fauna, great fi shing and recreational opportunities. He quit his job and joined the cause to save the Skagit Valley.
Visit Chittenden Meadow and follow the self-guiding interpretive trail, which meanders through prairie grasses and majestic Ponderosa Pine, indicative of a dry ecosystem. Only kilometers away, hike along Skagit River Trail’s lush coastal old-growth and spectacular groves of wild Pacifi c rhododendrons (blooming in June).
The Skyline II Trail traverses the Cascade Mountains from Skagit Valley into Manning Provincial Park. The trail is best-suited for hearty hikers, with an elevation change of 1310 m. (almost 4,000 ft.)!
Whitworth Horse Camp, provides horse lovers with campsites equipped with

Memorial ParkMemorial Park in downtown Hope, is the proud centre of town. The chainsaw carvings are photographed by thousands of world travelers every year. Featuring a performance shelter, paved lighted walkways, picnic areas, a children’s play area and Japanese Friendship Garden (see below).
The Japanese Friendship GardenBuilt in the summer of 1991, and dedicated to all of the Japanese-Canadians who were sent to internment camps during WW2. Tashme was an internment camp from 1942-1946, just 14 miles east of Hope along Highway 3. During the war, 2,300 Japanese-Canadians were interned there.
The oriental-style garden is a place to fi nd peace and tranquility below the Japanese cherry blossom tree or by the waterfall fi lled pond.
Centennial ParkCentennial Park along Highway #1 in Hope offers travelers one of the most easily accessible and best views of the Fraser River anywhere in the province.
The park is located at the foot of Wallace Street. There you can enjoy a relaxing break, learn a little history or watch the sun set over the river from the viewing deck, constructed by the Hope Rotary Club.
Aboriginal people have used the river for thousands of years as an important source for fi sh and as a transportation link. Welqámex or Greenwood Island, directly across from Centennial Park has been the site of an archeological dig over the last few years that revealed evidence of a large Sto:lo village with many pit houses. The island is also home to Blue Heron nesting sites.

HOPE VISITOR GUIDE 2011/ HOPE STANDARD 25
It was twenty years ago that Hope fi rst embarked on a mission to become the “Chainsaw Carving Capital”. After one of the aging Douglas fi r trees in Memorial Park was found to be suffering from root rot, an idea to carve the remaining trunk into a work of art quickly captured the imagination of the community. Soon local residents and visitors alike fell in love with the work of local carver Pete Ryan and photographers visiting from around the world took to capturing images of his work.
Over the years many other carvers began to hone their
skills and the Hope and District Chamber of Commerce stepped-up to organize Hope’s fi rst International Chainsaw Carving Competition, which is also held each year in early September. This competition draws top-notch carvers from near and far. Visitors can watch as massive blocks of cedar are transformed, in a single weekend, into new works of art for the community.
As the number of carvings on display around the community grew, a self-guided carving tour was added to the Hope Art Gallery’s Art Walk. Pick up an Art Walk map at the Hope
Visitor Centre to tour the community’s full array of carvings. From the mystical world there is a wizard, a Sasquatch and Pegasus on display. From past worlds there is a Viking warrior and a lumberjack. And, in keeping with our natural surroundings, view the many wildlife carvings that line our streets.
In all there are more than 50 carvings on display throughout the community.

HOPE VISITOR GUIDE 2011/ HOPE STANDARD 27
A world-class attraction in the Hope
area is the Coquihalla Canyon
Provincial Park – home to the historic
Othello-Quintette Tunnels.
The abandoned railway tunnels form
a stunning setting, impressive enough
to be used as the backdrop for fi lming
in Rambo: “First Blood”, “Shoot To Kill”
and “Far from Home: The Adventures
of Yellow Dog”.
Designed by engineer Andrew
McCulloch, the tunnels were built
between 1911 and 1916 to complete
the Kettle Valley Railway.
Constant washouts plus snow and
rockslides plagued the railway line
causing it to close in 1959.
Today, winter weather conditions continue to be a problem, preventing B.C. Parks from keeping the park open during winter months.
A short drive through Hope, (see map on page 33) takes visitors to the famous tunnels. From the parking lot, a leisurely walk along the abandoned railway grade will take you through the tunnels and the spectacular Coquihalla Canyon gorge.
PLEASE NOTE: Flashlights are useful inside the tunnels. The pay parking lot is in a remote area, lock valuables in your trunk or take them with you.
There are pit toilets and picnic tables on site. The park is open from April to October.

The Hope Slide is considered one of the most notable landslides in Canada and after 46 years the scarred mountainside and debris-fi eld remain a spectacular sight.
In the early morning of Jan. 9, 1965, the collapse of Johnson Peak sent tons of rock, mud and trees, hurtling down onto the fl oor of the Nicolum Creek valley, burying three kilometres of highway plus Outram Lake. Four motorists travelling the highway were killed.
When the dust settled the debris fi eld at some points measured a depth of 80 metres.
The force with which the 47 million cubic metres of rock, soil and snow crashed down into the valley,
was so great that the debris washed 150 metres up the opposite mountainside before crashing back down into the valley. A telltale treeline differentiation can still be seen. The tremendous impact is believed to have set off seismographic readings at an earthquake monitoring station in Penticton. These led to the belief that The Hope Slide was triggered by an earthquake. Today, geologists theorize that the aging Johnston Peak, riddled with factures and weak layers of volcanic rock, simply gave way to gravity.
A viewpoint located 16-km east of Hope on Highway #3, gives travellers a spectacular view of the damage and acts as a permanent reminder of the power of Mother Nature.

Christ Church Anglican National Historic Site offers visitors a chance to step back in time or just enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation.
It was in the late fall of 1859, when Rev. Pringle arrived in Hope; the Gold Rush was in full swing. The Reverend lobbied for the construction of a church and Captain J. M. Grant of the Royal Engineers was named the building’s architect. With its dark wood interior and leaded glass windows, Christ Church is a fi ne example of an Anglican parish church in the Gothic Revival-style.
The building was consecrated in 1861 and Rev. Pringle continued to lead the parish until 1864. Services have been held at Christ Church ever since, making it the oldest operating church on the British Columbia mainland.
The church’s full history along with information on present-day services can be found on the church grounds at 681 Fraser Ave. Over the summer months church members also offer regular guided tours of the historic site. They have also built a classical labyrinth for visitors to enjoy and will be celebrating the church’s 150th birthday in 2011.
Over the summer months, the church is open for guided tours

Hope’s yearly end-of-summer party is full of fun and games for all ages.
Join us for Hope Brigade Days – our end of summer party and our way to honour our fur-trading heritage.
Local service station owner, Ken James, fi rst came up with the idea for Hope Brigade Days, in recognition of the close of the town’s busy summer season. More than 40 years later, this small town festival remains a favourite of locals and visitors alike.
Over the years, the ‘Briggie’ party has evolved and expanded to include a World

where renowned carvers head to Hope
Memorial Park to compete for cash prizes.
The Sixth Avenue Park motorsports are also
a big draw of the ‘Briggie’ weekend, with
competitors mixing it up in the mini-stock

and fi nishing the weekend with a bang at
the Hope Brigade Days Demolition Derby.
Hope Brigade Days 2011 runs from

36 HOPE VISITOR GUIDE 2011/ HOPE STANDARD
Hope and the Fraser Canyon have been the backdrop for many big screen productions – offering directors a small-town feel and rugged mountain backdrops.
In the fall of 1981, Hollywood rolled in and raised the American fl ag over our town for the fi lming of “First Blood”, the fi rst in the series of Rambo movies.
It was a time for stargazing in Hope as Sylvester Stallone (John Rambo), and Brian Dennehy (Sheriff Teasle) frequented many local businesses.
Sylvester Stallone’s ‘First Blood’ still keeps Hope on the movie-making map and has made our area a mecca for Rambo fans. Movie posters and photo “stills” are displayed at the Hope Museum.
‘First Blood’ fans can take a walking and driving tour of the fi lm’s key locations. With the construction of a new bridge, this year will be the last year that Rambo fans can walk the bridge to ‘Portland’ where the sheriff dropped-off the drifter, Rambo. The Othello Tunnels, known as Chapman’s Gorge in the movie, is where the police offi cer fell out
of the helicopter, and is another favourite site on the tour. Observers can also see where Rambo clung for his life as he hung precariously on the rock wall of the gorge high above the waters of the Coquihalla River. The tunnels are within the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, which is open from April – October.
For more details on the Rambo tour, contact the Hope Visitor Centre.
Thanks to our quiet small-town look and our majestic mountains and canyons, Hope and the Fraser Canyon have a long history of Hollywood productions fi lmed in the area.
Since 1981, there have been more than 15 movies fi lmed here, with several becoming box offi ce hits. Some of them include:
• “First Blood” • “Shoot to Kill” • “Fire with Fire” • “K-2” • “White Fang” • “The Pledge” • “The Stickup” • “Hope Springs” • “Suspicious River” • “Wind Chill”• “Underworld: Evolution” • “Afghan Knights” • “ Far From Home: The Adventures of
Yellow dog”

The sites that are farther out are easily accessed by car and are perhaps the best part of the Rambo adventure, but the sites in Hope’s downtown core make for an interesting Hollywood experience by foot. The map on page 32 is divided into letters and numbers. Letters correspond to driving tour sites and numbers correspond to the walking tour ones.
A. Intersection near Highway #1 Exit 170 - This is where Rambo was greeted by Hope’s original “Welcome to Hope’’ archway as he came into town. Remnants of the archway can still be seen at the Hope Station House and at the Coquihalla Campsite.
B. Location of gas station which Rambo blew up as a diversion. The station was built specifi cally to be destroyed.
C. Bridge “to Portland’’ where the sheriff drops off the drifter.
D. Othello Tunnels – known as Chapman Gorge in the movie. Here the police offi cer falls out of the helicopter and is killed. Observers can see where Rambo clung for his life as he hung precariously on the rock walls of the gorge, high above the waters of the Coquihalla River. The town’s hero, Col. Trautman, also located his base camp here while tracking down the Green Beret specialist. The tunnels, Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, is open from April-October.
1. Sheriff Teasle picks Rambo up at Water Avenue, near Gardner Motors.
2. Trying to escape from police, Rambo, on a stolen motorcycle, fl ies over the tracks at Third Avenue.
3. With the police in hot pursuit, Rambo drives along Hudson Bay Street, passing Hope’s H-tree at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Hudson Bay St.
4. The Sheriff’s offi ce was located in front of the District Hall, at the corner of Wallace St. and Third Avenue. It has since been moved (see #8).
5. The current location of Treehouse Health Foods was temporarily renamed Mountain State Savings. Across Third Avenue from the bank, a Coke billboard was placed on the roof of Hope’s Appliance Plus to provide a hiding place for the crew’s cameras.
6. Rambo rode his stolen motorcycle down the sidewalk in front of Cheyenne’s Sports, on the north side of Wallace St.
7. The Outpost gunshop was built in the intersection of Commission St. and Third Ave. It was destroyed during fi lming.
8. The new location of the sheriff’s offi ce. It now serves as the Canyon Golden Agers Clubhouse, 560 Douglas Street.
Fans of the movie “First Blood” can take a walking and driving tour of some of the fi lm’s key locations.

A scenic little village lies nestled in the mountains just 19 kilometres east of Hope B.C. along Crowsnest Highway #3. Sunshine Valley is steeped in history from its roots as a traditional First Nations hunting and berry picking region, a vital rest stop for fur traders and gold seekers traveling the Dewdney Trail, to getting its start as a community with the building of the Trites Ranch. The community during WW2 took on the name of Tashme when hundreds of Japanese families were interned here by the Canadian government. Just up the highway from the small community visitors can experience another moment in history and view the devastation caused by one of the largest landslides ever recorded in Canada. The Hope Slide occurred on January 9, 1965 and more than four decades later visitors can still experience its power from a viewpoint along the highway.
Today, Sunshine Valley is home to many full-time and seasonal outdoor enthusiasts. The vibrant little community is also home to a new Holiday Trails recreational resort. Sunshine Valley offers more than 100 kilometres of
snowshoeing, hiking, biking and ATV trails that wind their way through the forests of the Sumallo River and Nicolum River Valleys. Kayakers and canoeists are also a regular sight on the community’s small lake. In the winter the lake then becomes a favourite spot for skaters.
Sunshine Valley is just kilometres away from the popular Manning Park Provincial Park, and the Skagit Valley Provincial Park, offering a wide variety of recreational opportunities from skiing and snowshoeing to hiking and canoeing.
Sunshine Valley residents hold a number of annual events each year including twilight and interpretive walks and a country fair-style Canada Day celebration on July 1. On B.C. Day weekend, Sunshine Valley Days kick off with motorbike and ATV community mud races. When the snow starts fl ying, community members come together again to celebrate Winterfest with snowshoeing clinics, broom hockey, snow sculpting and a dog sled demonstration.

Forging a route through the Fraser Canyonproved to be one of the most diffi cult construction projects in the province. But with that diffi culty came the birth of the breathtaking Fraser Canyon Highway.
The view of the Fraser River from the highway pullout just south of the Yale Tunnel is well worth the stop. At this point the Fraser river crashes through a narrow point of the Fraser Canyon, constrained by Lady Franklin Rock. Looking down from the viewpoint you can see a section of the Cariboo Wagon Road built in the 1860s.
The Alexandra Bridge, located in the heart of the Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park, just south of Hell’s Gate, is named after Princess Alexandra of Wales. The original
toll bridge was completed in 1863 then severely damaged in the fl ood of 1884. In 1912 the suspension cables were cut away as it was thought that the bridge was no longer needed with the completion of the Canadian Pacifi c Railway. However, by 1926, B.C. pioneers again saw a need for a river crossing with the advent of travel by automobile, and went ahead with construction of a new bridge on the original 1863 abutments.
Travel through the Fraser Canyon to enjoy the breathtaking views and pass through the seven tunnels that engineers were forced to blast through canyon rock in order to complete this section of the Trans-Canada Highway #1.
It was March 23rd, 1858, when Edward Hill casually panned the sand and gravel at his feet while enjoying his lunch. He quickly discovered gold, and began feverishly sifting and washing gravel from the bar. Later named ‘Hill’s Bar’, its discovery triggered the Fraser River Gold Rush, and the bar would become the richest gold producer on the entire Fraser River.
However, Edward Hill was not really the fi rst person to profi t from gold on the Fraser. First Nations had been quietly mining gold in their territory for at least a decade prior to 1858. Sto:lo and N’laka’pamux people traded gold, furs, and salmon with the British forts at Hope and Yale, in exchange for valuable goods such as hunting rifl es, cooking pots, and steel tools.
Although the British laid claim to the BC mainland as a fur-trading territory, First Nations held real political power on the ground. They vastly outnumbered Europeans in these early contact years, and aboriginal economic and cultural traditions fl ourished in collaboration with the fur traders.
When news of the gold strike at Hill’s Bar reached San Francisco, thousands boarded steamships bound for Fort Victoria. By the summer of 1858, thousands of American miners were pouring into the narrow confi nes of the Fraser Canyon and over-running First Nations villages. Some miners stole food and property, and assualted and killed Sto:lo and N’laka’pamux people. First Nations of the
canyon naturally retaliated in defense of their security and sovereignty, and so the“Canyon War” began.
The war was short and bloody, causing the deaths of dozens of miners and natives. It was only brought to an end thanks to the diplomacy and peace making of N’laka’pamux Chief David Spintlum.
The Canyon War, and the sudden infl ux of American miners into British-claimed territory, forced British authorities to act.
They therefore requested a company of British soldiers and lobbied London for full colony status. Thus, the crown colony of British Columbia was formed in 1858, as a direct result of the Fraser River Gold Rush.

VISIT HISTORIC YALE
The small town of Yale, BC was once the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. Originally established in 1848 as a Hudsons Bay Trading Post, Yale grew to an estimated 30,000 people during the 1858 gold rush. In the 1860s, with the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road, Yale became the terminus for one of the largest sternwheeler routes in North America and in the 1880s Yale bustled with the building of the Canadian Pacifi c Railway.
Today only a few of the original buildings remain in what was once a booming gold rush town. At the Yale Historic Site you can visit the museum where artifacts and collections from Yale’s historic past are on display in the ‘Creighton House’, an original home built in the 1870s. Built in 1863, St. John the Divine, one of the oldest churches in BC, houses original altar pieces as well as
‘Enduring Threads’, a collection of antique linens hand stitched by the students of All Hallows girls school. Visit the Living History-‘Tent City’ where you can relive life in the 1860s in the General Store, Saloon or Chinese Boarding house. Tour the tents in period-costume chosen from the extensive collection housed in the ‘Ward House’, another of Yale’s original buildings. Try your hand at gold panning, either on site or on the banks of the Fraser River. Gold pans and guide books are available locally.
For history buffs, walking tours of the old town sites and the Pioneer Cemetery can be booked through the Yale Historic Site or self-guided by purchasing a guide book.
Spirit Caves trail is located directly across from the Pioneer Cemetery on Highway 1. One of several day hikes in the Fraser Canyon, it offers a spectacular view of Yale.

Emory Creek was once the location of a bustling miners’ camp and frontier town. In 1858, more than 25,000 men traveled into the Fraser Canyon hoping to stake their gold claim and strike it rich. Just across the river from Emory Creek lay the famous Hill’s Bar — the gold fi nd that sparked the Fraser River Gold Rush. Five hundred men are believed to have camped at Emory Bar and although a considerable amount of gold was found, the mother lode was never discovered and the camp faded away.
In the fall of 1879, Emory City came to life again as the western terminus for
the Canadian Pacifi c Railway. The city quickly grew to 13 streets, 400 homes and businesses. Emory City was even home to the Inland Sentinel Newspaper, the fi rst newspaper on the mainland. Sawmills, hotels, saloons, a brewery, a general store, and a few less reputable businesses also helped build the new city’s economy. But by 1881 the CPR looked to Yale, just 5-km upstream, as its new western base and Emory City faded again into the past.
Today travelers can explore the history of Emory Creek and the Gold Rush at the Hope River General Store. Discover the nearby workings of the Chinese miners,
the restored railway caboose and take a peaceful stroll along part of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road. Emory Creek also offers great hiking, fi shing and camping opportunities.
In summer, experience the life of a gold panner at the annual Fraser River Gold Panning and Metal Detecting Competition hosted by Yukon Dan, August 25 - August 28, 2011.
Whether a beginner or a pro, there is a panning challenge for you: from speed panning, team panning or trying to fi nd a gold nugget blindfolded. The competition heats are great fun for spectators too.

Just an hour’s drive north of Hope along the Trans-Canada Highway #1, visitors will discover two cross-river twinned communities steeped in history.
Take a break from your travels at Francis Harrington Park, in downtown Boston Bar. The park makes a perfect Fraser Canyon rest stop. The park is home to the community’s restored ‘swinging’ aerial ferry. The ferry once was the only connection over the Fraser River between the two communities. The ferry last operated in 1986 when it was replaced by the Cog Harrington Bridge. Thanks to the work of dedicated volunteers, visitors can trace the history of the ferry and the history of the two communities it served
through a series of storyboards that border the park.
To learn even more about the fascinating history of Boston Bar and North Bend be sure to visit the Heritage Room in the Old North Bend Primary School. This facility is operated by community volunteers who are always happy to talk about old times and take you on a tour through the exhibits.
Visitors to Boston Bar can also tour the new Tuckkwiowhum Interpretive Park at the Anderson Creek Campground. Experience for yourself how a native village would have looked thousands of years before the arrival of the European settlers. This new aboriginal education centre includes
a teepee, pit house and a First Nations summer lodge. Then take a walk through the delightfully landscaped park and along the sandy beaches at the confl ux of Anderson Creek and the Fraser River.
Also visit the ‘Zoo Art Gallery’ located on a unique historic site, 4 kilometres north of Boston Bar on Trans-Canada Highway #1 (just south of the Canyon Alpine Motel). Here you can view the works of more than 10 Boston Bar/North Bend artists. The artwork ranges from original paintings and photography to silk scarves and handcrafted glass beads. Call 604-867-8815 for more information on the gallery.

A trip through the Fraser Canyon would not be complete without a stop at Hell’s Gate. Explorer Simon Fraser terrifyingly described this section of the river as his greatest challenge: “A place where no human being should venture, for surely we have entered the gates of hell”.
The Fraser River’s entire fl ow of water, from its 135,185 square km (84,000 square miles) watershed, roars through the narrow gorge at 757 million litres (200 million gallons) per minute. At 40-km per hour (25 mph), twice the volume of Niagara Falls roars through it during high water.
In 1913, as the Canadian National Railway carved its way through the Fraser Canyon, workers triggered an accidental slide
at Hell’s Gate that throttled the river even more, almost destroying one of the world’s largest sockeye salmon migrations. To revive the historic fi sh runs, a joint Canada - U.S. Commission created The International Fishways, an engineering marvel that has fl anked Hells Gate since 1944. At a depth of 28 metres (82 feet), it is one of the largest such projects in the world.
At Hell’s Gate the Trans Canada Highway passes 244 metres (800ft) above the Fraser River and It is here where your family’s adventure begins as you board the Hell’s Gate Airtram.
Upon docking at river level there is something for every sense: the rumbling of
surging water as you walk the suspension bridge spanning the gorge; gold-panning; or learning more about the rich history of Simon Fraser and the sockeye salmon. Shopping also awaits in the Gold Panner giftshop and Simon’s Cafe serves up its special “Salmon Chowder” followed by dessert in the Fudge Factory. Adding to all of these adrenaline-teasing experiences is the belief that the entire property may be haunted, though the ghosts appear friendly.
Hell’s Gate Airtram is located in the Scenic Fraser Canyon on the Trans Canada Highway #1. A 45-minute drive east from Hope makes it an easy day trip. Parking is free and pets are permitted. Open daily April 21st - October 10th, 2011.

The small Fraser Canyon communities of North Bend and Boston Bar are the gateway to the beautiful Nahatlatch Valley.
The Nahatlatch Valley features incredible mountain and canyon scenery, waterfalls, pristine lakes, and forests of pine, spruce, fi r and cedar.
Hiking and mountain biking opportunities are available along the river and lakes and on many of the former logging roads that ascend to alpine meadows. Fishing is another popular activity on the Nahatlatch River and lakes.
The main attraction of the Nahatlatch Valley however, is its world-class whitewater. Rafters and kayakers come from all over the globe to paddle its near-continuous Class III-V rapids, which are among the most exciting and challenging in Western Canada. The lower 14 km (9 miles) of the river from Francis Lake to the Fraser River features 37 amazing intermediate and advanced rapids.
Camping is available along the upper Nahatlatch River in Nahatlatch Provincial Park, although no services are provided, other than pit toilets at designated sites.
To reach the Nahatlatch Valley, turn off the Trans-Canada Highway in Boston Bar and head west across the Cog Harrington bridge over the Fraser River into North Bend. Continue north on that road winding along the Fraser River until it crosses the Nahatlatch River just before the railway point of Keefers. At the 25-km mark, you will see Francis Lake, the fi rst of three jade-green jewels. At the 26-km point, you will arrive at Hannah Lake and at 29-km you will reach Nahatlatch Lake, the largest of the three lakes in the pristine valley.

Lytton, where two great rivers meet, is a
little village nestled above the Fraser River.
The village is situated on a bench which
provides a level area for easy walking and
is very accessible for those with limited
mobility. It is easy to access the Visitor
Centre and Museum, and other facilities.
The Fraser’s largest tributary, the
Thompson‘s clear blue waters join the muddy waters of the Fraser right here. There is a wonderful viewpoint in the village. The mountains open up here welcoming you to our drier climate, with sunny skies. There are a number of trails and walks in the area. The community outdoor pool is a wonderful place to cool off on hot summer days. Every Friday
from May to October, a Farmers’ Market is on 4th Street in the village centre. Local produce is sold here and it is a lovely place to feel the friendliness of the community. Lytton’s major events are Lytton Days on the May long weekend, River Festival on the Labour Day weekend, and the Remembrance Pow Wow in November.
