DEFINITION:DEFINITION:

Industrial Training, simply put, is That learning where a student trainee is attached to an industrial or service organisation in order to learn the application of the theoretical frame work i.e. How to put the theories and knowledge acquired in the class room into practice in an industry or at Work place to acquire skills in his field of specialty.

INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AT K.S.W INDUSTRIAL TRAINING AT K.S.W

At K.S.W, we give Industrial Training as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility ( C.S.R.). There is a Company Policy to guide the well structured and coordinated set of activities by our Training Centre.

The trainee is attached to a very well experienced supervisor who assumes the role of a practical trainer.

Chapter Three (35 marks). The details of the activities the student took part

in during industrial training with special emphasis on the learning events & skills acquired. It is the gist of industrial training which the supervisors will be looking for when awarding marks at the University.

This will also help the trainee in future to tailor the C.V. and in applications for jobs since he has no work experience.

WHAT FINAL INDUSTRIAL WHAT FINAL INDUSTRIAL TRAINING REPORT IS NOT.TRAINING REPORT IS NOT.

• There is a tendency to confuse Industrial Training Report with Research Project Report. It is not a Research Project Report. The two are not synonymous and cannot be used interchangeably. They have certain features in common- i.e. cover page, preliminary pages numbered in Roman figures and 4 chapters of the main body, etc. But the details are not identical. Please, take note.

Challenges Faced in hosting Challenges Faced in hosting Makerere University Field Makerere University Field

Attachment.Attachment.• Lack of serious supervision from the

University- devote a whole day to see the trainees at the site not in the office! Talk to them in the presence of the field trainers.

• Length of industrial training- six weeks is too short a period. We recommend 12 weeks i.e. two weeks for induction and orientation,8 weeks actual practical work, then final report writing. Most trainees begin to give excuses to leave after 6 weeks only that going home for holidays!

04/19/2304/19/23 1616

CHALLENGES Cont’d.CHALLENGES Cont’d.

• Format of Final Industrial Training Report - there is need to standardize report writing now that it is compulsory. The trainees need to be taught this format as a group so that quality assurance is guaranteed. We have suggested one for your perusal.

• Low Level of General Knowledge- name, writing applications, C.V. & communication skills.

• Facilitation- Please, arrange to give the trainees vitamin M (money) for accommodation, medical bills, feeding, transport, stationery, etc.

04/19/2304/19/23 1717

OTHER EXPERIENCES.OTHER EXPERIENCES.

• How to write applications for jobs and how to tailor a compelling C.V. and other administrative communication,

• Games and Sports- Volley ball competition- Trainees Vs. Employees where trainees worn twice and lost once, we watched The 2006 Word Cup in my house, etc.

• Spiritual Welfare- Introduced them to the church and they took it by storm by preaching the Word, Leading the service, Reading the scriptures, ushers and presented skits & praise and worship songs, fellowship, etc.

• Good table manners- the correct use of cutlery at table i.e. Fork on left hand, knife on the right hand,

• Open minded intellectual discussions.

04/19/2304/19/23 1818

WAY FORWARD.WAY FORWARD.

• Invite strategic partners to come and speak to the students on benefits of industrial training before leaving for it,

• Frequent consultations with strategic partners at plant level with industrial training coordinators.

• Agree on standard format of industrial training report writing,

• Bring more strategic partners on board.
