• 2009 First Wavemaker G3 was bought to Inspecta Finland
- Level I certificates 09/2009 ( Mr. Hemminki, Mr. Anglé and Mr. Palkeinen )
- Demo events in the end of 2009.
• 2010 basic above ground guided wave jobs + demo events, mainly:
- Oil refineries
- Tank farms
- Harbours
- 2010 supplemental road crossings –course.
• 2011 First Wavemaker G3 was bought to Inspecta Sweden
- Level I certificates ( Mr. Bornhöft, Mr. Candan and Mr. Karlsson )
• 2011 Level II certificate ( Mr. Hemminki)
- Inspection procedure: Inspection of pipelines using guided waves ( Mr.Hemminki)
- From the beginning to this day
Experiences using Guided Wave ultrasonic testing
Sami Hemminki, BSc
GUIDED WAVE Method
Case Study 1
20”-line
In this case the inspection was performed
on a 20 inch pipeline with inflatable
transducer ring.
Pipeline was insulated and general surface
condition of the pipe was good.
The result of the guided wave wavemaker is
shown on the top picture.
Indication from distance ~11m did not match
with any obvious mechanical connection,so
it was decided to take off insulating material
to verify the cause of indication.
Severe corrosion was found under insulating
material.

Case Study 2
20”-line
In this case the inspection was
performed on a 20 inch pipeline with
inflatable transducer ring.
Pipeline was insulated and general
surface condition of the pipe was good.
The result of the guided wave
wavemaker is shown on the top picture.
Several indications were found from
support area.
Confirmed visually as a severe
corrosion nearby the support.

10”-line
In this case the inspection was performed
on a 10 inch pipeline with inflatable
transducer ring. Pipeline was insulated
and general surface condition of the pipe
was good.
Inspected total lenght was ~ 260 meters.
The result of the guided wave
wavemaker is shown on the top picture.
Indication from distance 2m to 4m
(neg.direction)
Severe corrosion was found under
Insulating material.
Maximum wall loss 50-60 %,
from nominal 6,3 to minimum 2,6 mm

Case Study 4
8”-line, ”No relevant indications /
severe indications”
In this case the inspection was performed
on a 8 inch pipeline with inflatable
transducer-ring.
Pipeline was non-insulated and general
surface condition of the pipe was good.
The result of a ”clear” guided wave
wavemaker data is shown on the top picture.
The lower picture represents corroded area
from the same pipeline as above.

• Reformer tubes in hydrogen furnace
• Centrifugal casting, austenitic
• Size: 155x14 mm (6” inflatable ring)
• Looking for (cracks.)
- any changes in cross-section
• Testing was performed
