Preparations

• Draw up routines and procedures– How to utilise the advantage of the new system

• Ensure proper familiarisation and operator training– Basic IMO ECDIS course module– Type-specific ECDIS familiarisation– Simulator training– Knowledge of electronic charts– Onboard training

Main principles

• Use ENCs where available• Use the same principles as with paper

charts– Navigation aids– Preparations should allow for simple

verifying by radar

• Verify GPS-position displayed on ECDIS

• Main focus is still out the windows..

Experiences (3)• IMO approval and special requirements for

combat vessels– Connection to combat information center (CIC) on

board

• Transition period– New vessels = golden opportunity

• Caveats– RNoN now follows the same rules as all civilian

shipping– Maritime certificates

Summary

• Education took a lot more time than we expected – still not quite there..

• Advantages given to us by e-nav are not yet fully incorporated

• This will change with new vessels fully operational.
