Supervisory committee: Supervisor + 2 member
Supervisory committee needs to meet every year
MSc Thesis Defense
Coursework requirements12 credits (4 courses)
- MEDI 501 mandatory
- MEDI 502 mandatory
- 3 credits MUST be 500+
- 3 credits CAN BE 300-499 or 500+
ALL 2nd YEAR STUDENTS: Responsible Conduct of Research Course!!!
Transfer from MSc to PhDPossible after one year in the MSc and no later than second year of MSc
Requirements:
80%+ average in 12 credits of coursework
80%+ in each of 9 credits
9 credits at 500+ level
Clear evidence of research ability
Approval from Supervisory Committee
Being a PhD student Continuous enrolment in MEDI649 (PhD Thesis
“course”)
Supervisory committee: Supervisor + 3 members
Supervisory committee needs to meet every year
Comprehensive Exam (and advancement to Candidacy) after 2 years in the PhD program
PhD Thesis Defense
Supervisory Committee Meetings
The Supervisory Committee needs to meet annually
MSc: Supervisor + 1 = minimum (but 2 recommended)
PhD: Supervisor + 2 = minimum (but 3 recommended)
Report needs to be submitted to our office after the meeting.
If composition of committee changes, let us know.
50% of committee members must be UBC faculty
Approval is needed for non-UBC faculty and faculty members who are not assistant/associate/full professors
Bi-annual Student Research Day
June and November: 10-minutes oral presentations + posters
First year students and students who are defending are exempt from presenting
Each student should present every year
Student committee is directly involved in organization and planning
Students Responsibilities + Scholarly Integrity
Be committed and dedicated
Don’t “cheat” – you will be sorry! Scholarly integrity in all aspects of your program is up to you.
Meet regularly with supervisor and supervisory committee
Maintain good relationship with supervisor and supervisory committee and follow their instructions
Stay continuously registered in MEDI549/649
