4.2 Recent Features These features, recently released in Experion MX CD Controls R700.1, remain available in Experion MX CD Controls R701.1.

4.2.1 Support for New Experion MX QCS Platform Experion MX CD Controls R701.1 supports the new Experion MX R700.1 QCS platform that runs in Windows Server 2016 R2 64-bit operating system and Experion PKS R500.1.

4.2.2 Improved QP Solver The multivariable controller implemented in Experion MX CDMV uses a Quadratic Programming (QP) optimization solver to compute CD actuator setpoints. In previous releases, due to default QP solver (Solver0) inability in dealing with tightly constrained systems, the CDMV controller was getting suspended in cases where the average value of CD actuator beam setpoints is driven towards constraints

Page 12: Experion MX CD Controls - balibago.org R701 Update... · Experion MX CD Controls Release R701.1 Software Change Notice 7 1 Introduction 1.1 About Experion MX CD Controls Experion

in the presence of difficult to control process disturbances. As a result, the CDMV Controls were not be able to operate for long periods of time. On some sites the customers have noticed CDMV Cascade Control suspended alarms and lack of CD actuator setpoint changes. This issue and corrective actions have been reported in the Priority Notification 6510497102 Experion MX CDMV R610 Controls May Suspend. In current release, CDMV Controls has been set by default to use the improved Quadratic Programming (QP) optimization solver (Solver1) for computing CD actuator beam setpoints. The QP Solver Type is shown on the Tuning tab of CDMultivariable Setup Display (see Figure 4-3). Refer to Experion MX CD Controls R701.1 User Manual (p/n 6510020586) for more details.

9 Special Considerations This section contains special considerations and helpful hints for Experion MX CDMV Controls.

9.1 CD Bin Resolution CDMV, the multivariable controller supported in CD Controls, has introduced the new concept of one common resolution, known as the CD Bin Resolution, to which measurement profiles at the scanner resolutions used for CD control are mapped. The configured Number of CD Bins attribute defines the CD Bin Resolution. The CD Bin Resolution is generally set lower than the scanner resolutions to reduce the computation load in solving the CDMV optimization problem. At the same time, the CD Bin Resolution must be sufficient in providing good definitions of process response shapes. However, there are a number of other considerations for setting the CD Bin Resolution:

• The CD Effect Profile and CD Effect Spread which is displayed on the CD Control display and reported in the MIS report to provide an indication of how well the CD control is performing are also calculated based on CD Bin resolution.

• The relative target profile (also known as the bias target profile) used to bias a CD measurement profile is edited and stored at the CD Bin resolution. While this provides the desired isolation of the CD measurement targets from changes in the QCS bin resolution that can occur at run time, it also means that when adding a new CD actuator with a higher number of zones to an existing CD

Controls system, a compromise between this rule and regenerating the CD measurement targets may have to be made.

• Note that most customers prefer target profile to be represented in a site specific lower resolution. This is typically chosen so the scanner or QCS bin resolution is an integer multiple of this lower resolution.

Since the target profile is always stored in CD bin resolution, we recommend setting the number of CD bins to be at least 3 times the number of zones of the CD actuator with the largest number of zones configured for the system, and also such that the scanner or QCS bin resolution is an integer multiple of the chosen CD bin resolution. Table 9-1 illustrates how to select the optimal CD bin resolution using a two-scanner, two-actuator system as an example. Table 9-1 Specification of CD Bin Resolution

Example Size Press Scanner (QCS bins)

Reel Scanner (QCS bins)

AutoSlice (zones)

Devronizer (zones)

CD Bin Resolution (CD bins)

1 300 400 60 60 200

2 300 400 80 60 400

3 800 600 120 60 400

4 800 600 120 60 600

5 600 800 150 60 800

• In Example 1, the CD bin resolution is calculated to be at least 180 CD Bins (max number of

actuator zones = 60, multiplied by 3), and then set to 200 CD Bins so the resolution of the Reel Scanner (400 QCS bins) is a multiple of the chosen CD Bin resolution.

• In Example 2, the CD bin resolution is calculated to be at least 240 CD Bins (max number of actuator zones = 80, multiplied by 3), and then set to 400 CD Bins so the resolution of the Reel Scanner (400 QCS bins) is a multiple of the chosen CD Bin resolution. The Measurement-Processing subsystem up-samples the measurement profiles obtained from the Size Press Scanner to the CD bin resolution, because the resolution of the Size Press Scanner is lower than the CD bin resolution.

• In Example 3, the CD bin resolution is calculated to be at least 360 CD Bins (max number of actuator zones = 120, multiplied by 3), and then set to 400 CD Bins so that the resolution of the Size Press Scanner (800 QCS bins) is a multiple of the chosen CD Bin resolution.

• In Example 4, the CD bin resolution is calculated to be at least 360 CD Bins (max number of actuator zones = 120, multiplied by 3), and then set to 600 CD Bins so the resolution of the Reel Scanner (600 QCS bins) is a multiple of the chosen CD Bin resolution.

• In Example 5, the CD bin resolution is calculated to be at least 450 CD Bins (max number of actuator zones = 150, multiplied by 3), and then set to 800 CD Bins so the resolution of the Reel Scanner (800 QCS bins) is a multiple of the chosen CD Bin resolution. The Measurement-Processing subsystem up-samples the measurement profiles obtained from the Size Press Scanner to the CD bin resolution, because the resolution of the Size Press Scanner is lower than the CD bin resolution.

9.2 Identification for Measurable Disturbances IntelliMap currently does not perform identifications for measurable disturbance-measurement response models used by CDMV controllers unless the measurable disturbance is actually a CD actuator. If the measurable disturbance is an actuator, the measurable disturbance-measurement response model will be identical to the corresponding actuator-measurement response models.

9.3 Matrices Build Functions The matrices defining the multivariable control QP problem must be rebuilt whenever the information they contain, such as process models and tuning parameters, are changed. If such information changes in the system configuration without a subsequent rebuild of these matrices, the multivariable controller will continue to solve an outdated QP problem (that is, the new configuration will not be considered in the QP problem). It is important to initiate the matrices build functions following a manual change to system configuration, which is considered in the QP problem, as well as to confirm the success of such build functions. The static matrices are required only for multivariable controllers that are active in the current control scenario and thus need only be built for such multivariable controllers. The matrices build functions can be initiated through the Multivariable Diagnostics display. The statuses of the functions are also available through this display. It is recommended that you confirm the success of the build functions following any configuration change that requires the matrices to be rebuilt. Such a confirmation can be made by validating the time of the last successful build, presented on the Multivariable Diagnostics display. If more than one multivariable controller is affected by recent configuration changes, rebuild each controller matrices individually through the Multivariable Diagnostics display, verifying the success of each individual build function using the available diagnostics information. If possible, make all configuration changes affecting a single multivariable controller and rebuild the controller matrices prior to making configuration changes and rebuilding the matrices of another multivariable controller. The matrices build function should be manually initiated for an individual multivariable controller after any of the following configuration changes are made to that multivariable controller:

• changes to any of the multivariable controller tuning parameters on the Tuning tab of the CDMultivariable Setup display

• changes to the process model, made through the Identification tabs of the CDMultivariable Setup display, of an actuator-measurement pair or of a measurable disturbance-measurement pair which is configured in the multivariable controller

• Enabling or disabling a multivariable controller constraint for an actuator which is configured in the multivariable controller. These constraints are those which appear on the Constraints tab of the CDMultivariable Setup display. Note that enabling or disabling any of these constraints through a display other than the CDMultivariable Setup display (for example, enabling Average Maintenance through the Setpoint Maintenance display) will also require the matrices build functions to be manually initiated.

The following circumstances will trigger an automatic rebuild of the matrices when the multivariable controller is active in the current control scenario:

• a grade load is complete: process models, constraints, and tuning parameters may have changed after the grade load

• a scenario switch has occurred: the matrices build is not necessary if the resultant control scenario after the switch does not involve a multivariable controller

• IntelliMap has transferred new alignment, process models and tuning data to CD Controls

• The alignments between the actuators and measurements controlled by the multivariable controller have changed. The alignments could vary if the WebTrak™ option of the alignment function in the Measurement-Processing subsystem is enabled.

• The total time delays of the responses of the measurements to the moves of the actuators controlled by the multivariable controller have changed. The total time delay for the response of a measurement to an actuator could vary if the speed retune function in the Measurement-Processing subsystem is enabled for the actuator and the downstream scanner from which the measurement is obtained.

• Adaptive Alignment has increased the setpoints smoothing prior to performing an alignment test or has updated alignment data to CD Controls.
