Saturday 27th March once again saw the annual tradition of fun and craziness known as the Bognor Rag Race descend on the small seaside town with the same name or ‘Boggers’ to some. The day consisted of at least 2000 students on a specified route visiting various public houses dressed up in some of the most imaginative home made costumes that some individuals had spent all year considering and prepping for this most memorable day of the year!!! From wrestlers to Disney characters, from film icons to adult babies, locals had the pleasure of seeing students all enjoying a day based entirely on raising money for charity. Every year at the University of Chichester’s

Student Union we choose a specific locally based and registered charity to raise money for by hosting events throughout the year. These are constructed with community engagement in mind, bringing the local/public sector and students together for a joint effort to raise funds for a worthy cause. This year our chosen charity is Dreams Come True who are indeed locally based as their home base is situated in Midhurst. The charity prides themselves on their mission statement:

“Bringing joy to terminally and seriously ill children”

Page 5: Exploded Magazine

‘Our dreams Children often have little to look forward to beyond continual rounds of hospital visits and sometimes painful treatments, or the prospect of living with a long term debilitating disease. The work we do delivers a profound impact. It provides them with the delicious pleasure of anticipation, the thrill and excitement of their dream actually coming true, and the lasting joy of wonderful memories to share with their families.

(An excerpt taken from the Dreams Come True promotional brochure)

The day was enjoyed by all involved from the students to the locals as well as all the licensed premises that kindly donated a sum of money to the worthy cause. The total amount raised from this day alone was around £3000. Ourselves at the Students’ Union and Dreams Come True would like to thank all that were involved in the organising, running of and contribution of the day and the monies raised, specifically to the managers of the premises, the locals who kindly donated, the charity itself, all staff members at the Students’ Union and of course not forgetting you, the student population for making the Bognor Rag Race once again an unforgettable event.

I’m in my third year and am scared about leaving. I don’t want to lose touch with my friends and some of them live really far away from me. What do I do?It is a sad fact of life that all good things must come to an end. However it’s quite alright to be nervous about leaving uni – I am! I can’t promise you that you’ll stay in touch with all your mates but any of your true friends will keep in touch. Anyone that doesn’t may not be worth your time.

My mate likes to stick Lego bricks up his bottom. Is this dangerous and what should I do about it?I shouldn’t think it’s very good for you. I don’t really think that Lego was made for that purpose. Maybe discuss with your friend why they feel the need to insert Lego up their bottom and encourage them to talk to a professional about it if you can’t dissuade them from doing it.

Is it true that alcohol rots your brain?I think uni work rots your brain more than alcohol does! In all seriousness I know that alcohol does affect things such as co-ordination so I suppose it wouldn’t be that far out to assume that frequently drinking massive amounts of alcohol could damage your brain. I’m not sure it actually rots it though.

I’m in my first year and I’m having a panic that I might fail. Help!Ok, for a start I’d imagine that you’ve already handed in your work for this year. If this is the case then there’s basically nothing you can do now. You only need to get 40% to pass your first year so, providing you do that, it would be a good plan to talk through your concerns with your Academic Advisor or other relevant tutors.

My sister named her new baby boy Kim. Is she just plain mean?Kim is a unisex name and can be used for both girls and boys. The first Kim I ever knew was a man and therefore I don’t find it weird to meet other men called Kim. However I would imagine that naming someone Kim could cause teasing. Hopefully he’ll be the sort of person who will learn how to deal with any such bullying.

I was told in a recent lecture that there is no such thing as reality, but without a reality to compare it to, how do we know for sure?If that is reality then this is an answer.

Why is it that when a man sleeps around he’s a hero, but when a woman does it she is a whore?I would never call a man that sleeps around a hero. I’m a bit old-fashioned and have always seen sleeping with someone as a big step that should not be taken lightly. You’re right though, there is the double standard which means that men who do have multiple sexual partners in a short space of time are admired while girls are not. I think it’s an attitude that has yet to be changed but will be as men and women become more equal.

I’m a second year and I’m not enjoying my degree at all. Is it too late to change? It depends if you’re thinking of taking a completely different route or whether you just mean something like a module change. I’d have a word with your lecturers and see what they think. If you have the funds to start a whole new degree and that’s what you want to do then by all means go for it, but after doing a degree for two years I’d strongly suggest that you consider persevering for that last year.

Roll up roll up, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… the one and only student festival Beach Break Live have not only gone and bagged themselves a breath taking new site complete with 8 miles of pristine silky white sand and a woodland adventure park with its very own dry ski slope but they have also managed to pull a whopper of a line up out of the bag!

Surfing on an eclectic wave of big beats, spoken word and ethereal pop, 2010’s line up is as diverse and unique as its crowd and is shaping up to be the biggest to date! We can exclusively reveal that synth pop’s finest (and tallest) Calvin Harris will be switching his skinny jeans for a wet suit this summer as he heads down to the beach to headline one of the three fantastic days.

Joining him on the beach bill will be drum and bass boys and rising stars Chase and Status who have seen a massive year tearing up the charts and dance floors around the country with their huge live show.

Next up is electro pop starlet Ellie Goulding whose weightless Tracy Thorne-esque vocals and glistening synth pop beats have marked her out as a definite one to watch and after scooping the Brits Choice Award and following in the footsteps of Flo and Adel; the sky seems to be the limit for this starry eyed songstress.

Also confirmed are London rappers potty mouthed lyrical genius Plan B and electro boy Example who will also be joined by Essex’s freshest performance poet Scroobius Pip and his trusty comrade and Mac knob-twiddler Dan Le Sac. Rhyme- spitter extraordinaire, the legendary Beardyman will also be on hand to wow you with his jaw dropping performance.

Flying the flag for the indie kids are Sunderland’s very own post punk rockers, the fabulous Futureheads. Expect high-energy super charged riffing with more hooks than a pirate’s convention as the boys treat you to a flawlessly tight performance you won’t forget in a hurry!

Next in line are super sexy electro outfit and purveyors of cool, the fantastic New Young Pony Club. Strutting, sparkle and bags of sass are what this four piece do best and with a stunning brand new second album under their studded belts, put on your dancing shoes as this foursome won’t fail to get you bopping!

They will also be joined by some brand new faces including 16-year-old Daisy Dares You. Dubbed the British Avril lavigne, expect bubble gum pink pop with plenty of attitude as this one to watch gives it some serious welly! And if pink’s not your thing then I Blame Coco (aka. Coco Sumner aka. Sting’s daughter) will be bringing her own blend of reggae tinged pop and a familiar husky voice to proceedings.

And as if this wasn’t exciting enough, Beach Break Live are also proud to announced a whole host of DJs to their bill including the likes of queen of the party set Radio 1’s very own Ms Annie Mac, Drum and Bass heavyweight Sub Focus, electro idol Fake Blood and Yorkshire big bass ragamuffin Toddla T along with old favorites, Scratch Perverts and Dub Pistols Sound system amongst others. We can’t wait!

Growing from just 1000 students in its first year to 5000 in its second and 10,000 in its third, 2010 will see a whopping 17,500 UK students flock to the Welsh coast in their masses for four days of sun, sea, sand, surf and music.

Think BBQs, sand castles, sun bathing, cocktail sipping and general beach side festival tomfoolery. Other amazing extras include some of 2009’s favourite venues, including the mighty Main Stage, the infamous party palace that is the Residential Dance Home, the Bass Busting Dance Tent, the Ridiculously Hot Tubs, the Camped Up Camp Fire and Chai Wallah’s to name a few. Of course we couldn’t forget the infamous Moustache Bar - where facial hair is not only recommended but essential!

The Beach Break ethos is a fair approach to the local community and ticket holders. Whether it’s running buses from universities to reduce carbon emissions, or working with the local community, suppliers, businesses and charities, BBL works to contribute to the local surroundings and the people they share it with!

Early bird tickets sold out in record time but full price tickets are now available for the student friendly price of £89 per person with affordable boutique camping options available to those who fancy ‘splashing out.’ See you on the sand in the sun!
