Bored With Your Boards? Try some of these ideas!

Exploratorium 2011

Kim McCain—This year in the HS we have "Be Cool--Read and Research".  Students vote on the theme in April during National Library Week and we have fun planning over the summer.  This year we created a 12 foot penguin on our center pole and through a student contest, he was named "Waddles".  We added penguin feet and words around the soffet, used strofoam coolers for ice blocks and made them into book shelves and a small reading space.

We made an igloo out of milk jugs for the elementary a few years ago!  The kids rotate through during skills time to read in the igloo.

Kim McCain--We rotate our theme from the HS to the elementary.  So last year the camping theme was in the High School and this year it is in the elementary.

Kim McCain--Here is the jungle theme.  We took our pole in the middle of the media center and turned it into a tree.  The monkeys a friend found at garage sales for me.

Kim McCain--We did the Rock N Read theme from Highsmith.  I put out an email for old guitars from our staff  (we are a small staff of 35) and then got some old instruments and records from the band teacher.  We were going for the  Hard Rock Cafe look.  Lots of fun. Then you can also see how the jungle theme was taken to the elementary the second year.

Robin Schrack--Blazer News: We get an extra copy of the local paper and cut out articles & photos when our students and staff are published.  We also include flyers and dates to keep the students up-to-date.

Bev Gustafson—We use a single theme for the library and leave it up all year!

We have borrowed several themes from Upstart—with permission.

Bev Gustafson—We coordinated a reading contest to go along with our theme—2010-11.

Bev Gustafson—Our 2011-12 theme—Be a Reading Star! Our reading contest is on the next slide.

We gave the letters a 3-D look by using styrofoam blocks behind them.

Bev Gustafson—Our dragon wound all the way around the library, with the tail nearly touching the head. A scale was added for each 80% or better AR test score!
