Chosen by CNN as one of the “Seven Wonders of Winter,” Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Trout) Festival is packed every year with ice shing enthusiasts from around the world. Saw through the thick ice to create a shing hole and catch a mountain trout with your bare hands at the festival. Around 24,000 lanterns in the shape of Sancheoneo (mountain trout) illuminate the festival at night. The festival is held annually in January. Additional recommended festivals include the Tomato Festival, which is focused on Hwacheon’s specialty produce, and the Hwacheon Jjokbae (Raft) Festival.

Alpensia Resort is the venue for the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, is 700m in elevation, and has snowy areas ideal for winter sports. A Ski Jump Lounge is located at the top of the skip jump tower constructed for the Olympics, and an Alpine Coaster takes riders on a trip from the top of the mountains, reaching speeds of 40km/hr. The resort features an annual festival including a marathon on the snow held in a cross country arena and the Great Mountains International Music Festival & School. This ski resort is open from the end of November through mid-March.

Explore the Bukhangang riverside and ride through the forests on a mountain bike (MTB). Riders that rent a MTB (10,000 won) at the entrance of Bungeoseom Island will receive a 10,000 won “Hwacheon Love Money Gift Certi cate” that can be spent in Hwacheon. Riders can use their Certi cates to purchase a variety of food.
