José Gregorio Hernández: Science and faith
Living passion of Christ
T his is a demonstra-
tion during Holy
Week for Boconó Cultural
Foundation for over 20 years.
In this way of pray, fifteen
stations represent the most
significant events of Christ's
journey to Calvary.
These representations have
achieved much religious and
tourist value in many states of
the country. In Tostós living
passion of Christ begins on
Ash Wednesday, when an ac-
tor that characterizes Jesus of
Nazareth on a donkey down
the street leading to the
church, accompanied by his
twelve apostles who represent
Christ fell twelve times carry-
ing the cross; and scenarios as
the palace of Pilate, Herod
and the Mount of Olives are
prepared. It is then staged the
Sermon of the Seven Words,
with the last words spoken by
Christ. People who represent
the history are popular actors
and locals. The costume fits
the era and is made according
to biblical references.
even very distant sites.
What he saved by not ha-
ving any vehicle was spent
on helping the needy. He
wanted to meet the
teaching of the Divine Mas-
ter: "Whoever wants to be
my disciple must deny
himself, making sacrifices".
He despised the vanity of
elegance. He studied in
Europe with the best scho-
lars, he was a professor at
the University and was the
founder of the Ministry of
Health, but always dressed
poorly. His clothes were
old and worn, but perfectly
clean. He wanted that Jesus
also say of him: "Blessed
are the poor, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven".
In the sanctuary dedicated
to José Gregorio Hernán-
dez devotees gather to say
their prayers of petition
and thanksgiving. the place
is filled with plaques of ap-
preciation for favors recei-
ved. Behind the chapel the-
re is a small museum, which
was built on the site where
it was the birthplace of José
Gregorio Hernández. Besi-
des the Sanctuary, a small
square in the village of
Isnotú exhibits a statue of
the Doctor .
V enezuelans revere
him for his virtues
as a doctor and
his religious voca-
tion. For this reason, seve-
ral years are attributed
several miracles and
healings, so much so, that
in 1949 the Vatican began
his research, in 1986 was
assigned to the hierarchy of
"Venerable", one of the
steps in the process of bea-
tification according to para-
meters of the Catholic
Church. He was buried in
the Temple of the parish of
La Candelaria, after being
long time in the Southern
General Cemetery. It was
the most visited grave of
the cemetery.
Never thought of getting a
car. He traveled on foot
