Acknowledgement of Country

We would like to acknowledge this land that we meet on today which is the

traditional land for Kaurna people, and that we respect their spiritual relationship

with their Country.

We also acknowledge the Kaurna people as the custodians of the Adelaide region

and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living

Kaurna people today.

We would also like to extend that respect to other Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait

Islander people who are present.

What is Mental Health? Is not just the absence of Mental Illness - it is a positive state of wellbeing,

whereby an individual can cope with the normal everyday stresses of life, realise

their full potential and be productive members of society.

Mental Health includes:

▪ How you cope with things that come up in your life

▪ How you deal with feelings

▪ How you feel about your life

▪ How you feel about yourself

▪ How you respond to stress

▪ How you see yourself in the future

▪ Your confidence and self esteem6

Page 7: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

Self Confidence vs Self Esteem

Self confidence is all about your ability to do things.

Self esteem is your belief in yourself as a person.

It is about the value you put on yourself as a human being.

Although related, it is possible to be a confident person and to have low self

esteem, even if only in some areas.

For example, someone confident in a work environment may feel bad about their

physical appearance.

Now consider flying a plane ….

7

Page 8: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

Flying a PlaneI am not confident in my ability to fly a plane - I’ve never had any lessons.

I know nothing about flying an aircraft, so it would be silly of me to think or say I could.

If I had low self esteem as well, I may add comments such as ‘I am too stupid to learn to

fly a plane.’

Yet with a healthy belief in myself I recognise that with the right amount of training I

would be able to learn how to fly a plane.

I may take a little longer than some people if my talents don’t lie in that direction, but

that is not a problem, just a fact that does not worry me.

Would you still fly the plane if your Supervisor asked you, and you weren’t trained?

Now consider the Stanford Prison Experiment. 8

Page 9: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

Stanford Prison ExperimentIn 1971 Philip Zimbardo set up an experiment at Standord University that attempted to

investigate the psychological effects of perceived power in a mock prison.

Volunteers were selected to be Correctional Officers and Prisoners, and Philip Zimbardo

was the Superintendent.

Several ‘Prisoners’ left part way through, and the whole experiment was abandoned after

six days, because of the possible psychological harm it was causing.

Let’s now watch a video about the Stanford Prison Experiment -

The Stanford Prison Experiment 29:00mins -

Do you still think you could still do the right thing, even if your

colleagues were pressuring you? 9

Page 10: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

Peer PressureIs being influenced by one’s own peers, whereby each member conforms to the

expectations of the group.

Do you think you will be able to treat everyone fairly; especially knowing that some

Prisoners would have committed violent crimes, such as murder and sex offences,

which may have involved children?

Do you think you can stand up to corruption?

10

Page 11: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

CorruptionDishonest or illegal behavior by people in power, which often involves bribery.

People working in Correctional Services are at risk of corruption because of working in a

position that is devalued by society, which receives low wages and pressure from

colleagues, Prisoners and/or their families.

Correctional Officers can make quick cash selling alcohol, drugs, information, mobile

phones, tobacco and weapons, and know how to go under the radar of security.

Sexual favours may also be traded.

Have you considered that Prisoners maybe more compliant if they

are on sedating type substances?

11

Page 12: Exploring Mental Health - WordPress.com...Identify the best solution. 7. Put it into practice. 8. Review your decision and make necessary changes. 24 Learn to Communicate Better Be

Will you accept, stand up and report it, or turn a blind eye?

What if threats were made against you, or your family?

12

Standing up to Corruption and Peer PressureRemember you can:

▪ Deflect with humour

▪ Say ‘No’

▪ Talk about it with someone you trust - without breaking confidentiality

▪ Walk away

Report it according to the ‘chain of command’ and document as necessary.

Building resilience and wellbeing will help you deal with such dilemmas.

Mental Health Disorders1 in 5 Australians are affected by Mental Health Disorders, which is sometimes referred

to as Mental Illness.

Are generally characterised by abnormal behaviour, emotions, thoughts and

relationships.

Symptoms can be persistent, relapsing and remitting or a single episode can occur.

Most can be successfully treated.

People are often stigmatised, but there are laws that attempt to protect

individuals from discrimination.

A high proportion of people who have been convicted have a Mental

Health Disorder.32

Myths Challenged

▪ Anyone can develop a Mental Illness

▪ A person with Mental Illness is more likely to harm themselves than another person,

and the few that harm others, substance abuse is normally involved

▪ Hospital admissions for Mental Health problems are rare

▪ Most people are treated in the community

▪ Not everyone with the same diagnosis experiences the same symptoms, i.e. not

everyone with Schizophrenia hears voices

▪ Only some people have chronic, debilitating symptoms

▪ People can have physical symptoms, like insomnia and nausea

▪ There are a range of treatments, not just medication

People in prison are at high risk of self harming and suicide.

Self HarmIs the deliberate action of injuring oneself to cope with strong feelings, such as, anger, despair, fear and self hatred.

Generally, it is not a form of suicidal behaviour, but is often used to drive away suicidal thoughts.

A person who is suicidal is trying not to feel anything, whereas a person who self harms is trying to feel better.

It can involve biting, burning, cutting, hair pulling, hitting, overdosing on medication, poisoning, punching, scratching, or even self neglect.

If you discover somebody has self harmed, apply First Aid.

A study in 2010 said that 8% of the Australian population Self Harm.

Suicide AwarenessSuicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death, with hanging being one of the most common ways people suicide in prison.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2016 Suicide was the leading cause of death for those aged between 15 and 44.

People at particular risk: Aboriginal people, LGBTIQ+ people, men, older adults, young people, those with a disability. Plus, those with a history of mental illness, and people suffering from substance abuse; particularly those who are detoxing or withdrawing.

A Prisoner who seems not to be coping with a stressful life event, such as, domestic problems, severe guilt or shame over the offence, poor health, threats to personal relationships are also at risk; particularly if they lack social supports.

Women are more likely to attempt suicide, but men are more likely to complete suicide.

In prison most suicides occur between 8pm – 8am.52

Suicide Awareness cont.Other risk factors:

▪ A newly admitted Prisoner; especially if it’s a persons first time in prison

▪ Fear around personal safety, such as being subject to bullying, fear of retaliation, having drug debts, and the inability to adjust to prison regimes

▪ People who have attempted suicide before, or who have had a close relative attempt suicide, and those who have history of self harm

▪ People who have committed serious offences (assault, murder, sex offences), and those on Remand

▪ Unexpected adverse court outcomes, i.e. failures of appeal, lengthy sentence, rejected Parole applications or an unexpected conviction

Sudden improvement in mood, such as being unusually happy following depression and/or unrealistic talk about getting out of prison may also be a warning sign.

If You Think Or Know That Somebody Is At Risk:1. Complete a Notification of Concern Form and forward to the Officer in Charge, who

will inform SAPHS (South Australian Prison Health Service)

2. Maintain Prisoners safety – you have Duty of Care to do so

3. Complete a Case Note; include that you have completed a Notification of Concern Form

If you do not have access to JIS (Justice Information System), then the Officer in Charge needs to make an entry on your behalf.

The Officer in Charge, and if possible with SAPHS, will assess the Prisoner and create an Initial Response Plan to determine the level of risk, and then implement the recommendations, such as, conditions of their placement and the observation regime (constant/high/moderate). An email must follow to HRAT (High Risk Assessment Team), who will reassess the situation within 24hrs.
