TITOLO PROGETTO

THE CLUSTERS: AN INNOVATIVEMODEL OF PARTICIPATION

Expo Milano 2015 has been conceptualized with the ambition to

bring the evolution of Universal Exhibitions one step further: an

Expo where every program and project is developed putting the

visitor experience at the center of the stage, and where the Theme

is perceivable in every element of the Exposition, experienced from

the very first step inside the site and in every interaction.

This radical change of paradigm is particularly evident in the Cluster

project.

Traditionally the Countries unwilling or unable to participate in the

Expositions building their own pavilion were grouped by the or-

ganizers under common structures, the joint pavilions, where the

single Countries maintained inside an individual space to showcase

themselves.

Moreover the criteria for grouping Countries under the same joint

pavilion have so far been geographical. Continental joint pavilions

for Africa, Asia and South America were put in place, or others for

significant regional territories and identities. However the idea be-

hind Expo Milano 2015 is to address the theme in every element

and in every project. Why not grouping Countries on a thematic

basis, rather than geographical, then?

Expo Milano 2015 has developed a participation model that al-

lows Countries to select the solution that best suits their needs and

projects. While maintaining the successful key elements of the tra-

dition of Universal Expos, allowing many Countries to participate

with their own sensibility and contribution, Expo Milano 2015 will

introduce a significant innovation to the type of exhibition spaces

and their placement. Countries will not be grouped according to a

geographic principle but according to elements of the Expo theme

“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

Working together with the Organizer in developing a common

thematic exhibition area, Countries will also retain their identity by

creating their own unique exhibition space. Furthermore this so-

lution will allow Countries from different regions and continents

to collaborate together, overcoming the traditional geographical

divisions of the Exhibition Areas of Expos and therefore enhancing

the Universal character of Expo Milano 2015. The Clusters area will

be located across the whole site, enhancing the potential dialogue

with other elements like thematic areas and other Countries’ au-

tonomous pavilions.

Corporate organizations, local authorities, international organiza-

tions and civil society can all offer their contribution in terms of

events, exhibitions, funding and supporting, catering and com-

mercial activities. Local authorities are already collaborating in the

Clusters development with their interest in developing offsite tour-

istic itineraries in the territories that have a strong connection with

the theme of the Cluster.

Also the private sector will be asked to come on board and support

the development of Cluster project, both financially, as well as in

terms of content.

Lastly International organisations are being involved by participat-

ing in the Clusters development and by contributing to the the-

matic elaboration, offering scientific contributions and contents.

he Cluster Arid Zones belongs to the Biodiversity that define and bring into connection the peculiarities of different terri-tories with common characteristics. The cluster represents countries connoted by the presence of aridity, desert and wa-ter scarcity. Water scarcity leads to social, economic and busi-ness problems with serious consequences that can be easily imagined. To face this, over the centuries, peoples of these territories have developed methods and techniques, as well as behaviors and traditions, to limit the impact and on the other hand to ensure their survival.The width of the territorial view to which the cluster pertains, required a more abstract analysis, placing in the historical and anthropological field the key to interpret life nowadays in arid zones. At first visual and perceptual references of water and its absence were analyzed, then the issue about dry gained rel-evance; not just as a result of the absence of water, but as a scenic connotation, a construction method, a scenery of ref-erence for diverse cultures. Although, starting form a depriva-tion, the landscape has outlined a wide variety of technical and aesthetic solutions.Dry means the absence of binder, the image of drywall that is set by gravity and the addition of single stones, a metaphor of the relationship of the individual in a complex society.Dry is also a method of preservation, Chance of the survival through the modification of food, an artificial alternative to a natural version of the food.Dry as a challenge, a continued exploration of limits, facing extreme conditions.

Il Cluster Arid Zones rientra nell’ambito delle Biodiversità che definiscono e mettono in connessione le peculiarità di territori diversi con caratteristiche comuni. Il cluster si confronta con Paesi connotati dalla presenza di zone aride, desertiche , ca-ratterizzate da scarsità d’acqua.La scarsità d’acqua genera problemi di natura sociale, econo-mica, imprenditoriale, con gravi ripercussioni, che possono es-sere facilmente immaginate. Per fare fronte a questo, nel cor-so dei secoli, le popolazioni di questi territori hanno messo a punto metodi e tecniche, così come usi e costumi, per limitare l’impatto in alcuni casi, per garantirsi la sopravvivenza in altri.L’ampiezza del panorama territoriale a cui il Cluster afferisce, ha richiesto una maggiore astrazione, cercando proprio nel confronto storico-antropologico la chiave di lettura per inter-pretare oggi la vita nelle zone aride.Inizialmente sono stati evocati i riferimenti visivi e percettivi ar-chetipici dell’acqua e della sua assenza. In seguito la questione del secco ha acquisito una posizione centrale. Non già come mero risultato dell’assenza di acqua, ma come connotazione paesaggistica, come modalità co-struttiva, come scenario di riferimento per culture diverse. Si è quindi delineato un panorama che, seppure partendo da una privazione, ha messo in mostra una ampia varietà di soluzioni tecniche, estetiche, etc.Il secco come assenza di legante. L’immagine di un muro a secco che sta insieme per gravità e addizione di pietre singole. Metafora del rapporto del singolo in una società complessa.Il secco come metodo di conservazione. Possibilità di soprav-vivenza attraverso la modifica degli alimenti. Una artificiale al-ternativa alla versione naturale del cibo. Il secco come sfida continua. Un territorio di esplorazione con-tinua dei limiti, di conquista nei confronti di condizioni estreme.

The project stems from the idea of the sand-storm in the desert. The phenomenon is a met-aphor for the difficulty of living and exploit the territory in arid zones where, however, some hidden resources still exist. The cluster is made of a cloud of suspended cylinders that generates a variation of density and visibility, a changing perceptual gradient able to involve and guide the visitor. Il progetto nasce dall’idea della tem-pesta di sabbia nel deserto. Il fenomeno è una metafora della difficoltà di vivere e sfruttare il territorio nelle zone aride dove tuttavia alcu-ne risorse nascoste continuano ad esistere. Il cluster è caratterizzato da una nuvola di cilindri sospesi che genera una variazione di densità e visibilità, un mutevole gradiente percettivo ca-pace di coinvolgere e guidare il visitatore.

cate a specifiche funzioni.

2. Le tempeste di sabbia di sviluppano dove c’è mancanza di vegetazione portanto si

genera un fenomeno di erosione del terreno. Nelle zone interessate dal fenomeno

si verificano problemi di orientamento e nella produzione agricola.

3. L’obiettivo del progetto è rappresentare una tempesta di sabbia che coinvolge i

padiglioni espositivi

The position of the pavillions suggests the idea of a mapped storm where central

and external points accord to specific areas.

La posizione dei padiglioni delle nazioni suggerisce l’idea di una tempesta mappata

nei punti centrali ed esterni in relazione a specifiche aree.

The different heights of the cylinders allow the visitor to be involved in a sensory

landscape that changes visibility and orientation. The various density gradients es-

tablish guidelines to enable a dynamic visit of the pavilions and interactive areas.

Le diverse altezze dei cilindri permettono al visitatore di inserirsi in un paesaggio

sensoriale fatto di alterazioni di visibilità e orientamento. I vari gradienti di densità

costruiscono linee guida che permettono una visita dinamica dei padiglioni e delle

aree interattive.

Public spaces are carved from the tubes and are displayed with light, these spaces

and hold different events from concerts , performances and others.

Gli spazi pubblici sono scolpiti da tubi e vengono visualizzati con la luce, gli spazi e

mantenere diversi eventi concerti , spettacoli e altri.

Faced to general difficulties characterizing arid cultivation, dry food and freeze-

dried food restaurant suggests the perception of an innovative relationship between

man, water and alimentation.

Date le difficoltà di coltivazione caratterizzanti le zone aride, la vendita di dry food

e cibi liofilizzati suggerisce la percezione di un rapporto innovativo tra uomo, acqua

e alimentazione.

Tamarix e Euphorbia are plants able to saveguard 80% of water. In desertic zones,

they represent a life resource and provide a system of orientation.Starting from dis-

cover the hidden water and hydrozoning, Visitors can discover step by step the

“atomic market”, distributed among the various pavilions including individual exhibi-

tions and specialties from countries.

Tamarix e Euphorbia sono piante capace di conservare l’80% di acqua. In zone de-

sertiche, rappresentano una risorsa vitale e fungono da sistema di orientamento.

A partire dalle suggestioni di acqua “nascosta” e hydrozoning, i visitatori possono

scoprire passo dopo passo l’atomic market, distribuito tra vari padiglioni e compren-

dente esibizioni individuale e specialità acquistabili dei paesi espositori.

SEBKHA

Sebkha means, in Arabic, flat salted desert, made of a varied reticule of traces created by evaporated water. Before arriving at this dreamy place, visitors walk through a protected area, an environment shaped by lights and shadows in continuity with the interiors of the pavilions. Through a hidden entrance, he scenario opens and multiplies itself, being the climax of the ex-perience offered by the cluster. Sebkha indica, in arabo, un deserto piano completamente sa-lato, caratterizzato da un variegato reticolo di tracce create dall’evaporazione dell’acqua. Pri-ma di giungere in questo luogo onirico il visita-tore attraversa uno spazio protetto, caratteriz-zato da un gioco di luci e ombre in continuità con gli interni espositivi dei padiglioni. Attra-verso un ingresso nascosto lo spazio si apre e si moltiplica all’infinito, culmine dell’esperienza offerta dal cluster.

The project was developed in four steps. First we thought about the positions of the

pavilions. A rotation of 30 ° of a pavilion has given rise to a breaking of the perimeter

creating a different perspective. The intermediate space that act as a transitional el-

ement here is translated into a sequence of roofs placed at different heights. Finally

the visitor can reach the central space: the secret garden.

The scheme of the project is conceived by the addition of two main concepts. The

arid landscape conveys a unlimited endless sense and resources that it can give us

in this dryness condition. From this mix comes the diagram of this project. There are

hanging gardens of arid plants and in the middle of the inner courtyard there is an

unexpected virtual arid landscape.

Il progetto si è sviluppato sulla base di quattro steps. Per prima cosa si è pensato

alla disposizione dei padiglioni. Una rotazione di 30° di un padiglione ha dato vita ad

una rottura dell’assetto perimetrale creando così una diversa prospettiva. Lo spazio

intermedio che funge da elemento transitorio si traduce qui in una sequenza di

coperture poste a diverse altezze per giungere infine allo spazio centrale: il giardino

segreto.

Lo schema del progetto è pensato dall’addizione di due principali concetti. Il pa-

esaggio arido che trasmette un illimitato senso di infinito e le risorse che esso ci

può dare in questa condizione di siccità. Da questo mix scaturisce il diagramma di

questo progetto. Giardini di piante aride sospese e, nel cuore della cortile interno,

un inaspettato paesaggio arido virtuale.

The location of the visitor provides 3 levels. The entrance in the pavilion, which with

a false height contributes to the game of compressions, is the first. Subsequently

you can enter into a zone interposed between the halls and the courtyard where

corridors, that let go in light beams, host an alternation of commercial areas and

exhibition of traditional products. Inside the wall, light the secret garden.

Il percorso del visitatore prevede 3 livelli. L’ingresso nel padiglione, che con una

falsa altezza contribuisce al gioco delle compressioni, è il primo. Successivamente

si entra in una zona di interposta tra i padiglioni e la corte interna dove corridoi che

lasciano penetrare fasci di luce ospitano un’alternanza di commercial areas e exhi-

bition dei prodotti tradizionali. All’interno del muro luminoso, il giardino segreto.

The project can also be seen as a overlap of levels: the roofing system, the external

perimeter belt that connects each pavilions, pavilions that are made by a double

layer of glass and finally the secret garden.

Il progetto si può vedere anche come una sovrapposizione di livelli: il sistema di

coperture, la cintura perimetrale esterna che collega ogni padiglione, i padiglioni

costituiti da una doppio strato di vetro ed infine il giardino segreto.

A study of the type of plants allows to better understand the effect of the overhead

garden.

Uno studio della tipologia di piante permette di comprendere meglio l’effetto del

giardino sopraelevato.

View from the interiors of the secret garden. An arid landscape made by bright ma-

terial is reflected countless times in the infinity. Moving from a bound and partial in

shade place to a bright endless area generates amazement and marvel.

Vista dall’interno del giardino segreto. Un paesaggio arido costituto da brillante ma-

teriale viene riflesso innumerevoli volte nell’infinito. Passare da un luogo costretto e

parzialmente in ombra ad un luminoso territorio infinito genera stupore e meraviglia.

This project has a generative approach that is

based on botanical origin and utilizes the short-

age of water to produce biomass. As roots, trans-

parent pipes wrap the buildings, becoming part

of a natural habitat, exploiting the solar energy

and a certain amount of water to help the growth

of algae. These elements create a continuity in

the landscape and function as wall between in-

side and outside. To sum up it is a challenge of the

nature that in particular situations can help the

development of dry countries. Il progetto segue

un approccio di tipo generativo che nasce da una

matrice botanica e sfrutta la scarsità d’acqua per

produrre biomassa. Come radici, tubi trasparenti

avvolgono i padiglioni, si trasformano in habitat

naturale, sfruttano la luce solare e un’esigua per-

centuale d’acqua per favorire la crescita di alghe.

Questi elementi creano continuità nel paesaggio

e fungono da diaframma tra interno ed esterno.

È la sfida di una natura che, anche compressa,

potrebbe sostenere lo sviluppo nei paesi aridi.
