WHY PLANT?

Ques%on  of  the  Day

Has the Church Lost Touch with the Lost World?

Missionary:  John  20:21

•  America  has  entered  a  post  Chris%an  era  and  from  now  on  we  are  planning  to  train  future  pastors  as  foreign  missionaries  assigned  to  an  alien  culture.      –  (Dr.  Haddon  Robinson)

Why  Plant  a  Church?

There  are  Biblical  Reasons   There  are  Theological  Reasons   There  are  Apologe3cal  Reasons

Biblical  Founda%on  1. Matt. 16:13-20 2. Matt. 28: 18-20, Acts 1:8 3. Acts 2:40-47 4.  I Cor. 3 5.  I Cor. 12, Romans 12 6. Eph. 4:1-16

How do these classical church planting texts shape your thinking about your church plant?

Objec%ve

•  To  establish  a  solid  apologe%c  framework  for  building  a  healthy,  growing,  reproducing  church.

•  Issue:  A  planter  needs  to  nail  the  “why”  ques%on  before  he  can  effec%vely  recruit  leaders,  workers,  seekers,  prayer  supporters,  and  poten%al  donors.

#1  Ques%on:  Why?

•  The most frequent question asked of church planters is … “Why do you want to plant a new church in this community at this time?”

v Neighbor Nudge: How will you answer this question?

Apologe%cs  Overview

1.  Mo%va%ons:  Why  you?  2.  Advantages:  Why  church  plan%ng?    3.  Objec%ons:  Why  another  church?    4.  Need:  Why  this  place?    5.  Core:  Why  I  am  plan%ng?

Mo%va%ons:  +/-‐

1.  Compassion  for  the  lost  2.  Desire  to  preach  3.  Desire  to  expand  God’s  kingdom  4.  Desire  to  prove  self  worth  5.  Need  for  more  churches  6.  No  open  doors  7.  Burden  to  reach  specific  people  8.  Can’t  get  along  with  other  Chris%ans  9.  God’s  calling  10.  I  want  to  do  my  own  thing  11.  Personal  theological  agenda

v   Your  Mo%va%ons

•  Your  three  strongest  mo%va%ons?  1)     2)     3)

•  What  nega%ve  mo%va%ons  to  confront?  –     –

•  What  posi%ve  mo%va%ons  to  develop?  +     +     +

1.  Grow  Faster  •  “The  single  most  effec%ve  evangelis%c

methodology  under  heaven  is  plan%ng  new  churches.

•  Without  excep%on,  the  growing  denomina%ons  have  been  those  that  stress  church  plan%ng.“  –  Peter  Wagner

•  New  churches  provide  superior  results.    Some  denomina%ons  have  found  as  much  as  80%  of  their  conversion  growth  comes  from  new  churches.    –  Ralph  Moore

2007 Study: Conversion Growth

2.  Evangelize  Beher

3.  Develop  leaders  quicker  •  Every  church  labors  to  develop  and  disciple  new  leaders,  but  new  congrega%ons  do  it  faster.

•  They  are  forced  to  raise  more  leaders  per  capita  and  quicker  than  established  churches.

4.  More  Innova%ve  •  Church  planters  test  new  ideas  as

they  look  for  ways  to  reach  people  for  Jesus  Christ.  P Seeker  Services  P Worship  Teams  P Disciple  Making  Pathways  P Marke%ng  Outreach  P Fractal  Team  Mul%plica%on  P Mul%site  Paradigm  P Team  Sermon  Prepara%on  P Organic  Church  P Servant  Evangelism  P External  Focus

5.  Don’t  fight  over  picky  stuff

•  They  are  more  focused  on  their  mission.  •  They  are  more  focused  on  evangelism.  •  When  you  are  in  a  foxhole,  you  don’t  have  %me  to  argue  about  the  color  of  the  carpet.

Common  Objec%ons

1.  Plan%ng  will  damage  the  parent  church?  2.  We  already  have  enough  churches?  3.  We’re  not  ready  to  start  a  new  church?  4.  Plan%ng  costs  too  much.  5.  Plan%ng  will  hinder  our  fellowship.  6.  We  are  not  large  enough.

oceans,    jungles,    and  deserts,  but  about  crossing  the  streets  of  the  world's  ci%es.

•  From  now  on,  nearly  all  ministry  will  be  cross-‐cultural,  amid  the  urban  pluralism  caused  by  the  greatest  migra%on  in  human  history  from  southern  hemisphere  to  the  north,  east  to  west,  and  above  all,  from  rural  to  urban."

CURRENT TRENDS

Which  Na%on  Will  be  the  Largest  Chris%an  Na%on  in  10  Years?

Professor  Yang,  who  wrote  'Religion  in  China:  Survival  and  Revival  under  Communist  Rule',  believes  the  number  of  Chris%ans  in  China  will  rise  to  160  million  by  2025  and  247  million  by  2030,  just  as  America's  Chris%an  popula%on  appears  to  be  waning.

“Parents assumed that if you just sent the kids to church through high school, they’d come out being good Christians. We all thought our kids would go to church in college. That was a very naïve thought.” !!Rev. Daniel Lee (1st gen, Global Mission Church, Maryland), quoted in “Silent Exodus,” Christianity Today, 1996.

“Silent Exodus” of the Second-Generations

•  More  Asian  Americans  in  college  campus  ministries  indicates  a  future  trajectory  for  the  American  church.  Asian  culture's  value  for  educa%on  translates  into  larger  numbers  of  Asian  Americans  ahending  U.S.  colleges  and  universi%es,  as  noted  in  the  2006  Chris%anity  Today  ar%cle,

The  Tiger  in  the  Academy  Asian  Americans  populate  America's  elite  colleges  more  than  ever—and  campus  ministries  even  more  than  that.  At  the  recent  Urbana  2012  triennial  student  missions  conference,  39%  of  the  16,000  ahendees  were  Asians  &  Asian  Americans,  up  from  24.4%  at  the  previous  Urbana  2009.  Both  InterVarsity  Chris%an  Fellowship  and  Cru's  Epic  Movement  are  inten%onally  contextualizing  ministries  for  Asian  Americans,  by  Asian  Americans.
