She said this success showed that leadership, commitment and focused efforts on the ground could lead to tangible results. Girma said that during the launch of the provincial campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortali- ty in South Africa (CARMMA). The event was held last Monday at the Phekolong Hospital in Bohlokong, Bethlehem. The purpose of the event was to ensure accelerated implementation of key strategies such as the departmental strategic plan and the millennium goals to reduce maternal, child morbidity and mortality through acceleration of provi- sion of quality maternal and child health care, health system strengthening, community empowerment and involve- ment and effective collaboration with partners and relevant stakeholders. “The event was reaffirmation of the commitment of the province to accelerate the provision or quality maternal and child health care. The African Union launched the CARMMA campaign to increase action towards improving outcomes across Africa. The campaign is also recognition that the United National Millennium Development goals could not be achieved without the substantial reduction in maternal infant and child mortality rates,” she said. She said to date more than 40 African countries had joined the CARMMA movement and added that South Africa was amongst CARMMA’s most committed champions. Benny Malakoane, the Free State MEC for Health, said the Free State was a leader in many aspects. He said they were the country leaders in terms of reduction of maternal deaths by 33%. “We need to make sure that we strengthen that to attain that at all costs,” he said. Malakoane said they would have to make sure that they restored the trust and the confidence of the people. “We have to make it happen. We need to start getting our nurses smiling. The doctors need to come down to earth.” He said it had emerged that one of the causes of maternal deaths was hyperten- sion. He added that the Free State was also the province with the most people suffering from hypertension. “In terms of CARMMA as a programme it started when we embarked with the district clinical special team and they wanted to start with antenatal care, but we said the protection of those who were vulnerable started when a woman was of child-bearing age. Education starts there.” He said it was their duty to make sure quality care was improved in their hospitals and he added that every citizen had to have access to quality health care and that access should not be influenced by your socio-economic status. and set it on fire,” she said.

She said no one was injured.Only the driver and the passengers’ property

“THIS is the firstbranch I wassupposed to launchand I am not goingto launch it.“I am disappoint-

ed. This is anembarrassment.You don’t call usif you’re notready.“We don’t push

anybody to call us,but when you callus you should beready,” were thewords of JuliusMalema, theEconomic FreedomFighters (EFF)commander inchief, during hisvisit to Qwaqwa.Malema said this

because he was nothappy with theattendance in theBolata PrimarySchool Hall to where he had been called tolaunch an EFF branch in ward 13 of theBolata Village on Saturday. He said he had come to Qwaqwa after he

had been invited to launch two branches. He had, however, launched one of the twobranches on the day.“You’re playing with us. There are many

branches that we could have gone towhich are ready.“This meeting was supposed to be a

historical meeting, but it is a flop. If youdon’t want me to say this you should nothave called me.“You should think twice when you call

me,” said Malema.Malema told people who had attended

the event that they should not invite himhoping that he would be romantic andsweet while things were going awry.“No, we are running a revolution and if

you are not doing your work there will be

no organisation inthe Free State.“You’re confirm-

ing this andwhere there is noorganisation weneed to act,” hesaid. He urged the

branch to reorgan-ise itself. He said more

than 100 people hadfilled out the formand had paid, butadded that theywere not after themoney.“We need people.

If we get money, there are no peopleand this is equal tohaving no organisa-tion.“You know that

we are coming frompeople who buymembership forothers.“Because when

we have an organisation that has people, when you do something wrong they willcall you to order because they arealive.“But when people go to graveyards and

pick up the names of the dead they leadan organisation of dead people. No onewill call them to order.“They said they had a million members,

we know that they don’t.“It is fraudulent memberships that do

not exist. The real members that are alivein the Free State were kicked out,” hesaid.Dingane Dlamini, the EFF coordinator of

ward 13 in Bolata, said he was verydisappointed with what had happened. Hecited funerals and other commitments forthe poor attendance.“We expected many people, but some

could not come because of funerals andsuch,” he said.

ALFRED MOSIA, Bohlokong, Bethlehem:

HOW long will it take South Africans to betruly free? How longwillwe suffer the injusticesof the self-imposed despots who faked their self-imposition through mock elections like RobertMugabe? How long are we going to sufferSharpeville, the Marikana massacres from theso-called government elected “by the people ofthepeople”?Howlongwill it take residents, whoare not people because people are members ofthe party, to raise genuine concerns that the rul-ing party needs addressing?Such concerns will be rubbished and discard-

ed by our so-called leaders. This country is at

the edge of a precipice. Onewonders how long the gripwill hold before it tumbles toits premeditated suicide. It was three weeks ago on a

WednesdaywhenIhadaccom-panied a friend to the Dihla-beng Regional Hospital tohave an eye operation. To my disgust all the pa-tients that had been booked for that day wereturned away and given a tentative date some-where around March next year. The reason being that the Department of

Health had no funds. But guess what? The lordsin position of power are gallivanting all over the

province with the taxpayers’ money can-vassing for upcomingelections. If the Department of

Healthcannot fulfil itsmandate, it has gross-ly violated the rights

of the nation. It must give a full account as towhy it has failed and should not be given a se-cond chance. Culprits should face litigation andget their marching orders. Barely a week afterthat incident an ambulance was called not farfrom where I reside. It was my son who calledbecause the family was traumatised.

He said the call centre had asked him sense-less questions such as What was the person do-ing? What was she doing then? When the ambulance arrived an hour later,

the person had died. The crew summoned quickresponse cars for back-up. What for? There are complaints and suggestion boxes at

all the hospitals – they are just decorations. Towhomarewe going to direct our concernswhenthe leaders are suspects awaiting conviction?I wish I could reiterate the words of Paul to

the Galatians: “You foolish Galatians, who be-witched you?”We see and hear these things, butcome election time, we vote for the same party,a party composed of self-confessed mafiosos.

How long until South Africa is truly free?

JIMMY MOLOI, Johannesburg:

I READ in the Express Eastern Free State of18 September about Thato’s accident on 28 Au-gust, andwould like to respond to PaloNtoane’saccusations. On that evening I called awomanby the name

of Pulane whom I believe is employed byMashinini Enterprise. Pulane told me that shehad been telling the TLC driver, Thekiso, toclose the manhole for a long time as she wasaware that those holes were dangerous, but heignored her.She then asked me to call Palo who was very

unpleasant. Palo told me that Pulane had noright to instruct the driver. He said he was theonly one who could give such instructions. Inmy opinion, I think Pulane asked help becauseshe lives in theareaandwasawareof thedangerto the children in Fateng tse Ntsho.Palo promised to go and investigate the fol-

lowing day, instead, Pulane andMagwaza visit-ed the family and Magwaza offered R30 to themother of the child to buy bread for the childwhich angered me very much because I foundit an insult to the family.A woman called Puleng also came all the way

from Bethlehem to bring medicine. The motherof the child called while Puleng was there andIquestionedherabout themedicineandshe toldme that it was how they did things if there had

been an incident like that. I told them that thechild had already seen the doctor somoremedi-cine would be a bad idea. She was not happy af-ter that. I felt as if theywere doing thingswrongto try and cover up their carelessness and un-professionalism relating to a shabby job.I would like to challenge Ntoane’s statement

that he saw no signs of blood and that it hadlooked as if Thato had been burnt. Howon earthwould there be blood a day after the incident?Palo will never find any blood because his con-struction crew was quick to close the killergrave after the incident.Palo shouldknowthatpatientsarecleanedbe-

fore they are given the necessary attention andshould not make uninformed statements in themedia. He never set foot in our house. Unless hehas another name . . . Palo must start being ef-fective in his job and should stop misleadingpeople with lies. Thato could have died in thathole that the Dihlabeng Municipality andMashinini Enterprise left open for fourmonths.Their negligence nearly caused a death. WhenI arrived in the area Friday morning and drovearound the township those holes were still notclosed up, except for the one that Thato had fall-en into. It looks like Palo is running his circuswithout anyprofessionalsmonitoringhim. I amvery disappointed with the statement he hadmade in Express Eastern Free State on Wednes-day, 18 September.

Organisation’s president who was

also a team coach during the tourna-ment, said he was happy that theyhad finished fourth in the tourna-ment.He said it was an improvement

compared to previous years inwhich they would have finished lastwith one medal or even none.“We have improved and surely

with the experience gained from thetournament we’ll keep on climbinguntil we claim the first sport,” hesaid. He said they would have won

more medals had it not been forsome of their players being disquali-fied during the tournament.“Some of our players were dis-

qualified because of documentation. We’ll make sure this does not hap-pen in future,” he said.Hlasoa said the only difference be-

tween themand the other teamswasthat the other teamswere supportedin numbers. In the game, however, they were on the same level.“The standard of the tournament

was top-class and we are happy thatwe did not fail in hosting it. It wasa successful tournament indeed andwewant to thank everyonewho con-

tributed to its success,” he said.Lulama Menzi, the Eastern Cape
