    Hearing is believing

    }

    Sidwell Guduka

    ANDILE JANTJIES mysteriously

lost his hearing on 16 June last

year and much of his life as well.

    The 18-year-old, who attends the

    Albert Moroka High School in

Thaba Nchu, was over the moon

when he heard his voice for the

first time in months last week.

This was after the University of

    the Free States Department of

    Otorhinolaryngology had per-

    formed a cochlear implant on

    him at the Universitas Hospital

    in Bloemfontein on Thursday.

    During the operation an

    electronic device was surgically

    implanted into Andiles ear where

there was sensory damage to the

    cochlea.

    After this the soft-spoken

Andile said he almost cried when

he heard the sound of his voice

for the first time in seven

    months.

    Its very isolating. People

    think youre stupid because you

dont hear them when they speak

to you. Im happy I can hear my

    voice again, he told Express.

I had to drop out of school in

gr. 11 last year, due to my loss of

hearing. I was depressed. It has

always been my hearts desire to

hear again, but I never thought

they would be able to restore my

    hearing.

I would love to thank my

    family and friends for always

    being supportive.

I also want to thank the

    doctors who performed the

    operation. They were very patient

with me. They did a marvellous

    job, he said.

    In answering a question about

whether he will be going back to

school this year Andile said he

cannot wait to reunite with his

    friends at school.

Im ready to continue with my

    academic journey again. Ill be

returning to school as soon as

the doctors give me the green

light. I want to study towards a

    degree in Chartered Accounting

    after passing matric, said

    Andile.

    His aunt, Mapoelo Lekwala (32),

thanked Dr Iain Butler and his

team for a job well done.

This is like a dream. I cant

believe Andile is able to hear

    again.

We were all in a deep state of

    depression at home because of

his situation. He could not hear

us when we talked to him.

    What made things worse for

us was the fact that we could not

    communicate with him in sign

language. It has been a difficult

    seven months, Lekwala said.

    Butler, the principal specialist

    at the Department of Otorhi-

    nolaryngology, said the cochlear

    implant that was performed on

    Andile cost R220 000.

This was provided for by the

    Universitas Hospital. The family

has not paid for this device

    specifically.

What we do ask is that the

    family should try and collect

money to build up a bit of a

    reserve emergency fund for if

something goes wrong like if a

    cable breaks and things like

    that, Butler said.

Andile is not the first patient to

    have undergone this kind of

    operation at the Universitas

    Hospital.

    We have done almost 50

    cochlear implants here. Most of

    the patients we performed this

    operation on are attending main

stream schools. They are living a

relatively normal life as a result

    of the cochlear implant, Butler

    explained.

    Smiles all round from learners

    }

    Sidwell Guduka

    ABOUT 90 needy children were

all smiles when they received full

    school uniform packs on Tuesday.

    All the beneficiaries were

    learners of the Gonyane Primary

    School in Phahameng Location,

    Bloemfontein.

    The uniforms were donated by

    the Mangaung Metro Municipali-

    tys speaker, Mxolisi Siyonzana.

Last year, he donated 20 pairs of

    shoes to underprivileged kids at

    the same school.

    Premier Ace Magashule

requested us to adopt schools as

    public representatives, so I

    decided to adopt the Gonyane

    Primary School after checking

    their performance. They have

been doing pretty well over the

    years. Fortunately the ward

    councillor in this area requested

us to make some contribution to

    the school, Siyonzana told

    Express.

Last year, we came here to

    donate school shoes to the

    learners and we promised them

we would return with more full

    uniforms this year. The majority

of learners who attend this school

    is from a disadvantaged back-

    ground. We believe these uniforms

will motivate them to do well in

    class, he said.

We want to thank FNB for

    sponsoring the initiative, they

really understand the plight of the

poor. The initiative is aimed at

    improving the conditions of our

    children. These children come

from the poorest areas and they

receive child support grants or are

    orphaned, he added.

    Manchidi Chabeli, the principal

    of the Gonyane Primary School,

    expressed her delight with the

    school uniforms donated to the

    kids.

Im very happy, in fact, I feel

like crying. Some of these kids are

    from families who cannot even

afford to buy them school uni-

    forms. Our educators often ask

people in the township to donate

uniforms to these needy kids so

that they can be like other

    children, Chabeli said excitedly.

    On behalf of the school

management and SGB, I want to

    thank the Mangaung Metro

    Municipality and FNB for their

    contribution.

    Our school may look beautiful,

but we dont have funds. We fall

    under Quintine 3 where people

are very poor. We sometimes buy

some of the learners maize meal

so that they can have something

to eat when they go home.

About 50% of our pupils are

    needy. They come from poor

    families and dont even have

    breakfast when they come to

    school in the morning. They

normally have their first meal at

school because we have a feeding

    scheme, Chabeli said.

    Meanwhile, FNBs account

    executive Josy Sehloho refused to

speak to the media about his

    companys involvement in the

    project.

    EXPRESSs front-page story last week

about three children in the Pieter Swartz

informal settlement who do not attend

school has once again moved our loyal

    readers to action.

On the same day that the story was

published and the plight of the children

made public, the Mangaung Metro Mayors

    Office took action.

    White Mohapi, manager of special

projects in the Mayors Office, visited the

family and Express accompanied him and

    his entourage.

It is the responsibility of the Special

Programmes Office that matters such as

these are handled speedily, Mohapi said

in reference to the childrens plight.

The children, who are now learners of

the Kamohelo Primary School in Pieter

Swartz, were all smiles yesterday as they

attended their first day of school.

    Anastasia Poonyane of Thembinkosi

    Investment helped with purchasing

uniforms for all three children on Monday.

This is part of our Have-a-minute-cam-

paign where we help those who are most

    in need, she said.

Thapelo Motse, older brother to Mpho

and Modise and their primary caregiver,

said he is struggling to find the words to

thank Express for having helped him in

    returning his siblings to school.

I do not know what to say, if it were

not for the story that you published my

brother and sister would probably still be

in the same situation, he said.

Express has also received several phone

calls and emails from concerned readers

    who also want to help.

As a mother myself, I was touched by

the story and decided to offer my help. It

really is not necessary for children to

suffer like this while there is something

that can be done to better their situation,

said a caller who only identified herself as

    Maletsatsi.

    David Makara, new business developer

at Letsatsi Finance, said they were in a

meeting with the municipality when the

article came to their attention and they

    decided to help.

We are aware that there are no jobs out

there so through the municipality we want

to help and give back, Makara said.

Makara committed R2 000 every month

for the family to buy groceries.

    NEWS

    Give blood, save lives

    FEBRUARY is the month of

love shared amongst people in a

    romantic nature, but at the

    South African National Blood

    Service (SANBS) we celebrate

    this love every month.

    With your unselfish act of

    donating blood and sharing the

love of the human race you can

make a difference to the lives of

    patients you may never know.

    So we encourage all eligible

donors to share their liquid love

    this month and commit to

    donating blood a minimum of

four times a year. Its not too

late to make this your resolution

    for 2014.

As a gesture to say thank you

we have a special gift for those

who donate four units in a

    calendar year.

    With schools, universities and

    organisations all back to usual

operation we are able to main-

tain a good blood stock level,

    especially with the help of

    donors. However, we know that

this can change on any given

day if our daily collection of

3 000 units is not met, says

    Vanessa Raju, communications

    manager at the SANBS.

    All blood groups are very

    important. However, group O is

the group that is often in short

    supply.

The demand for this is much

higher as it can be used for

    patients of all other blood

    groups.

If you belong to the blood

groups A and AB, why not

    consider becoming a platelet

donor. You can find out more

from the SANBS staff at your

    local blood drive or donor

    centre.

    What are platelets? Platelets

play a vital role in blood clotting

    and prevention of excess blood

    loss. Platelet donation is a

    simple process that takes about

one and a half hours to com-

    plete. The blood is processed

    through a cell separator which

    retains the platelets and returns

    the other blood components to

    Pastor Mutombo Moise

IT gives God such a pleasure to

know you fully depend on Him.

    Depending on God means

whatever you do or plan to do

should always be in line with the

    Word of God.

    Some people today only show

    their dependence on God when

    things are fine with them;

    meaning they have money, food

on the table, a roof over their

heads only then do you see them

    in the church magnifying the

    Name of Jesus.

    Such peoples relationship with

God will never stand the test of

time because if they lose their

    possessions, they will end up

    doubting and questioning God.

    Other people only show their

    dependence on God when things

begin to go wrong; when the bank

    repossesses their property. Such a

    relationship can never stand the

test of time because it is based on

fear and not on pure love for God.

    Read Exodus 16v21.

It was possible for God to

supply His people with food for

months or years but He did not do

it that way; instead He chose to

    supply them daily. This shows

that God wanted them to fully

depend on Him because He knew

if the Israelites could not depend

on Him, their future in the

    promised land would be impossi-

ble; not even a single person

    would have entered.

I urge you, dear readers, to

depend on God whether you are

    poor or rich; able or disabled;

    employed or unemployed. Those

who saw you as a nobody will

soon see you as somebody in

    Jesus Name.

    }

    Sidwell Guduka

    MAXWELL KONADU, the Ghana

    national team coach, has urged

    local fans to continue throwing

    their weight behind his side.

He admits his side faces a tough

    challenge in their 2014 Champion-

    ship of African Nations (CHAN)

    semifinal clash against Nigeria at

the Free State Stadium in Bloemfon-

    tein tonight (20:30).

It is going to be a difficult match

against Nigeria, but one that we

have to win at all cost. They are

one of the powerhouses of African

football. So well have to be at our

best to beat them. Well plan well

for them. I think the whole of

    Africa will enjoy this match,

    Konadu told Express.

I urge the people of Bloemfontein

to rally behind us when we take on

    Nigeria. Weve been enjoying their

support since we arrived in South

    Africa for the tournament. Their

    support for Ghana has been

amazing. We are in the semifinals

because of the great support that we

continue to receive from them. We

are very thankful to the people of

    Bloemfontein, he said.

    Weve been received very well

here. The local people are very

friendly and they love us. We are

happy to be playing our games

here. Generally, I think the people

of South Africa love Ghana, he

    added.

The Black Stars edged DR Congo

with a 1-0 victory to reach the

    semifinals-stage of the tournament.

    Before that, they humbled both

Congo and Ethiopia by a goal to nil,

and drew 1-all with Libya in the

    group stage matches.

Konadu says it was not his sides

game plan to go out and score only

one goal in every match they

    played.

We dont take to the field to

score only one goal. We plan our

    games according to the strengths

    and weaknesses of our opponents.

But it happens that we score one

goal and we defend it very well.

That for me is a plus for our team.

Well try to convert all the chances

that we create during the match,

    Konadu said.

    In the other semifinal fixture

today, Zimbabwe will battle it out

against Libya for a final spot in the

competition. The match kicks off at

17:00. The winners in todays games

will meet in the final at the Cape

Town Stadium on Saturday at 20:00,

while the losing teams will fight for

third position at the same venue

    three hours before the final.

    available at all Computicket outlets.
