THE new board of the Galeshewe Associa-tion for the Care of the Aged and Disabled(Gaasca) promises to work with dedicationand to realise the potential that is neededto take the centre to greater heights.

It plans to raise Gaasca’s standards towhere it belongs.

During a welcome-back ceremony hostedfor the elderly at Gaasca, the board, electedin September 2014, announced its readinessto get its hands dirty. Hard work will beneeded to make space for the 300 targetedmembers as is required by the NorthernCape Department of Social Development.

On the day, the elderly were treated to ahealthy meal followed by dessert.

According to the chairperson of theboard, Jeffrey Zitha, Gaasca was supposedto have accommodated the required numberof members a long time ago given itsexistence of 20 years.

He emphasised how much time had beenwasted to change the centre around overthe years while different leaders came andwent. Zitha also elaborated on the positivechanges that were supposed to have beenimplemented already.

According to Irene Ndlovu, the co-ordina-tor at Gaasca, limited transport facilitieswas the reason the centre could not getmore members.

She revealed that using the 23-seater busas the only mode of transport to fetchingand dropping off the elderly for their dailyprogrammes is a challenge to them.

“Even if we wish to, we cannot transportall the elders to the centre on a daily basis. Thus we put some of the elderly on themeals and wheels programme, revealedIrene.

Zitha said they were dedicated to fixingthe house. “It is expected to be of a highstandard.”

Sharing the interview with the secretaryof the board, Jeffrey Kale, the membersagreed in unison that challenges of securityand transport should be the first to beaddressed in order to guarantee the safetyof the elderly.

“We should improve the channels ofcommunication with members of thecommunity in order to clarify the criteriaof membership in the centre,” added Kale.

The board made a resolution to raisemore funds to address the transportchallenges of Gaasca.

Apart from the many challenges that thecentre faces, Ndlovu expressed her heartfeltappreciation to the different communitiesfor supporting the centre throughout theyear.

“We had many visitors who offered thecentre a helping hand in different ways,”she said.

“Some bought our hand-made items afterwe had showcased them. We were alsospoiled by different organisations, compa-nies and government departments. We feelblessed.”

The centre is further expected to launchan elderly choir this year to showcase theirtalent.

LEBO NTSHEKISANG washospitalised for depression afterthe realisation that her picturehad been splashed all over socialnetworks as the person who hadspreads Aids in and aroundKuruman.

Ntshekisang, who is a marriedmother, said that the post thathad been splashed on Facebookand WhatsApp had been the talkof the town since around Decem-ber last year.

She is known to be openlyliving with HIV and is a memberof the Gasegonyana Local AidsCouncil representing the PeopleLiving with HIV (PLHIV) sector. She is also reported to havevolunteered her services at theKuruman Clinic ARV site, including the Kamden Clinic, asan HCT counsellor.

The number to be called on theFacebook post leads everyone to aZimbabwean man, who claims tobe a gardener in Cape Town.

The man who calls himselfPhillip Nyakurita, swore that hewas not the one responsible forthe post that implicated Ntsheki-sang of being an Aids-spreadingmachine. The concerned Nyakuri-ta said he had arrived in thecountry two weeks ago and gotendless calls to enquire whetherthe Facebook post was true.

“I told myself that it was noneof my business, because I havenothing to hide. People arecontinuing to call me and it isaffecting my work, because myboss sees that I am always on the

phone trying to explain to thecallers that I do not know any-thing. I am just a garden boy inCape Town renting a backroom inKhayelitsha,” explained Nyakuri-ta, who also voluntarily gaveExpress Northern Cape his homeaddress for confirmation.

To clear his name, he wasconfident enough to refer callersto MTN for retrieval of his detailsand calls. In that manner he saidit would also prove that he had

never met any South Africanwomen and had never been to anyother town before.

“I keep on hearing that town’sname (Kuruman), but I do nothave any idea where it is.”

The Civil Society Forum isplanning a march on Fridayagainst the abuse of people livingwith HIV and Aids.

They raised concerns about themany unresolved cases related tostigmatisation and discrimination

which were not addressed in theJohn Taolo Gaetsewe District(JTG).

They quoted a recent incidentwhere another civil society forummember representing the PLHIVin Joe Morolong was verballyattacked by a community memberduring her health educationsession in December.

“We are raising these issuesbecause two weeks ago anothercounsellor was verbally assaulted

by a community member duringan educational programme. Thatis discouraging and discrimina-ting,” said Mpho Lekgetho, thechairperson of the Civil SocietyForum.

“The story seems to be writtenby an angry uninformed memberof society.

“These two people have decidedto go out publicly with theirstatus for many years and thishas helped us to be able to get thecurrent number of support groupsin the district.

“It is with regret today thatthey are experiencing suchdiscrimination in this district,”added Lekgetho.

She continued to add that peoplelike the two victims were thosethe forum relied on, who werebold enough to stand up onpodiums and share their personaljourney at relevant events for freein an effort to help society to beable to accept their status and gettested.

“The story written about her(Ntshekisang) is discouragingpeople to get tested and those whowere ready to disclose their statusare scared.

“As the forum we would like tohave a peaceful Black Day MouthZipped March and we needsupport as an injury to one is aninjury to many.

“The march aims to be aneducational session, flyers will bedistributed and posters will havemessages ending stigmatisation.”

More details of the plannedmarch will be communicatedthrough the media.

BAFANA BAFANA made a disappointingstart to their 2015 African Cup of Nations(Afcon) campaign as they lost 1-3 againstAlgeria on Monday.Shakes Mashaba’s troops dominated the

game from the start and should have takenthe lead in the 23rd minute, but DeanFurman’s rasping shot from the edge of thebox rattled the woodwork.Bafana should have wrapped up the game

in the first half, but their strikers werewasteful in front of goal.Tokelo Rantie was set free just before the

half-hour mark, but his effort went justwide and South Africa were to rue theirmissed chances. However, they took the lead early in the

second half through Thuso Phala after agood move involving Rantie and Andile Jali. They could have doubled their lead a few

minutes later when they were awarded apenalty after Jali was brought down in thebox, but Rantie blasted the spot kick againstthe crossbar. After that missed penalty, Thulani

Hlatshwayo headed the ball into his own netin an attempt to clear the danger. Bafananever recovered from that setback.

Soon they were a goal down as FaouziGhoulam beat Darren Keet from close range, before Islam Silman sealed a come-from-be-hind victory for Algeria, as he slotted underKeet. The Bafana shot-stopper should havedone a lot better to save the ball. The South Africans must win their next

two Group C matches against Senegal onFriday (21:00) and Ghana on Tuesday (21:00)if they entertain any thoughts of making itthrough to the knockout stages of thetournament.Coach Mashaba said there were aspects

that needed to be fixed ahead of their nextfixtures.“We need to motivate the guys, talk to

them, bring them back to their feet,”Mashaba said.“You look at the moments in which we

lost the game, at crucial times, and the kindof goals we conceded.“The first goal was an own goal – the

goalkeeper and his defence lacked communi-cation. The second goal as well – we allowedthem to stretch us and then they camethrough in the middle and they scored.“I think these are the things we will be

able to repair in the next game. It is justthat it has made our work more difficult, because the next two games are must wins.”
