THE Education With Enterprise Trust’s(EWET) Entrepreneurship Education (EE)programme has made the dreams oflearners of the Xhukhwesa CombinedSchool come true.
That came after the learners, who hadentered the competition while they werein gr. 11, recently emerged as theprovincial winners, scooping a prize ofR50 000.
They plan on building their own schoolcraft shop where they can sell hand-madeSan crafts and products to keep theirculture alive.
The school was invited to enter for theEWET Entrepreneurship EducationSimama Ranta, which means empoweringthe South African economy throughentrepreneurship education.
The aim of the competition is to identify, honour and showcase those South Africansecondary school learners of gr. 8 to gr. 11,who perform well in entrepreneurshipeducation.
The Xunkhwesa learners, who are nowin gr. 12, entered the competition on thestrength of their market day products.
Here they sold and exhibited theirhand-made materials like weaved baskets, placemat arts and crafts, bows and arrowsand animal crafts.
Two members of the group, JasonMarenda and Nashada Ndango, wereflown to attend the national presentationsin Johannesburg, where a school fromMpumalanga was crowned as the nationalwinner.
According to a representative ofEWET, Solomon Kabanda, a group of 54
learners from around the countryattended the national leg of the competi-tion.
The programme is expected to enhanceentrepreneurship education among learners.
Applauding the learners of Xhukhwesafor taking the initiative to enter thecompetition by themselves and boastingabout Marenda giving one of the bestpresentations, he invited more schools toenter the competition.
“Due to the rising unemployment rate inthe country, entrepreneurship is the way togo.
“It can shape you, as we need jobcreators. The reason why the representinglearners were treated like executivebusiness people is to boost their confi-dence at this young age,” explained Kaban-da.
He said that the prize money, sponsoredby Eskom, was to be used for the school’senterprises.
“The learners should be allowed to be ascreative as they want to be and get asmuch exposure as possible. Not a singlecent should be used without the learners’approval,” he said.

THE people of the Pixley ka Seme Districtare concerned about the slow pace of growthwithin their community. The community members who attended the
Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises(SMME) summit in De Aar last weekTuesday (03/03) are reported to have givenJohn Lolwana, the district executive mayor,a big ovation when he slammed the systemfor allowing big contractors to suffocatesmall contractors such as SMMEs.
Solar contractors, who were expected togive the economy of Pixley ka Seme a boost, were described by Lolwana as having giventhe community a hard time by not empower-ing local SMMEs.“Those people got away with murder. The
big contractors don’t subcontract our peoplerunning SMMEs,” Lolwana was quoted assaying, in a statement by Lucky Chonga, spokesperson of the Northern Cape Depart-ment of Finance, Economic Development andTourism. In the statement complaints were raised
that local municipalities laws were too tightto accommodate local SMMEs, while theyallowed foreigners to make money. This,Lolwana pointed out, was what led to banksnot knowing “our SMMEs” except when theycould prove that they had money. Accordingto the mayor, these were some of the thingsthat were holding back the community,“because there is no way that governmentcan deal with all our problems”.“These are our brothers who helped us out
during apartheid, but how many of ourpeople today have shops?” Lolwana was
further quoted as saying. It was also pointed out at the summit that
the solar panels in use in the district had notbeen manufactured in the district, butelsewhere so that that people from outsidethe province benefitted economically fromthem. The summit also heard that water provi-
sion and availability issues had to beaddressed to improve the economic activityin most towns situated within the Pixley kaSeme District Municipal Area. This accord-ing to the department.

ALMOST half of theresidents of Bloeman-da are living in fear ofeviction.
The residents, whohave been living onthe stands for 20 yearsor more, say the own-ers of the stands whohold the title deeds aremaking their lives aliving hell. The own-ers are reported to ei-ther involve a thirdparty by reselling thehouses or handing itover to other benefici-aries.
In most cases theowners of the housesare not the owners ofthe stands that wereissued in 1989, with atoilet and a tap.
According to someof the residents, thestand owners have al-lowed different peopleto stay in their shacksand are living else-where after reachingverbal agreements.
Occupants weregranted houses, which have resultedin a nightmare as thetwo parties are now atloggerheads.
The current occu-pants, who say theyare now untouchable, say that they eitherbought the housesfrom the owners of thestands or have neverreally met the owners.
Occupants wereplaced on some of thestands after emptystands were identifiedin Bloemanda. Theywereallowed tostay toreduce vandalism.
According to the oc-cupants, they areready to take mattersinto their own hands,as they refuse to beevicted.
They claim thattheir vulnerability isbeing turned into elec-tioncampaignsbypol-iticianswho comeandgo while the standowners turned thehouses into money-making schemes.
According to Benja-min Mahumapelo, theANCbranch chairper-son in Bloemanda, they have raised thismatter with the SolPlaatje Municipalityand various MECs ofhousing who cameand went, but nothingwas done.
The municipalitypromised the occu-pants entitlement doc-uments during PatricLenyibi’s term, but itnever materialised.
The story of KlaasRiet (53) is one ofmany.
In his street alone, eight other people livein fear of eviction bytitle deed owners.
They complain thatthe municipality, which knows abouttheir problem, contin-ues to block their elec-tricity due to these ir-regularities.
The angry residentscamped in Riet’s yarduntil midnight lastweek Tuesday (03/03),waiting for the Sher-riff of the Court whothreatened to evict Ri-et from the house that
he claims to haveboughtand lived in forthe past 23 years.
Riet said that heeven feared going towork as the Sherriff oftheCourt continued toharass him to moveout of the house.
He moved onto thestand after an agree-ment with the owner,Emily Langa, whopassed away in 2010.
According to Riet,he had an agreementwith Langa to payR10 000. Langa’s twochildren, NomvulaKok and Isaac Langa, were reportedly in-volved in the transac-tion.
Isaac attested to thestatement and addedthat they had nevertaken the legal routeof going to the convey-ancing attorneys tochange ownership ofthe house as expected.
“Yes, we receivedthe house money fromRiet and used it forday to day expenses. My mother, my sisterand I shared it,” saidIsaac. “Now Nomvulawants to remove Rietfrom the house andmake her daughterstay in it.
“I was so ashamedthat she tried to trickme into giving hersole authority of thehouse so that shecould give it to herdaughter,” said Isaac.
However, Kok sanga different tune whenvisited by ExpressNorthern Cape.
She said that sheand Isaac both had anagreed to hand thehouse over tohermar-ried daughter duringa meeting after hermother’s funeral.
Thedecisionwas re-portedly taken afterthe realisation thatthey both had theirownhouses andhad tohave a new benefici-ary who was responsi-ble.
They even changedthe municipal ac-count to be in herdaughter’s name. Ac-cording to Kok, hermother had made averbal agreementwith Riet to tempora-rily stay in the house,as she was too ill tolive alone.
“I do not know any-thing about a R10 000.I have never evenheard my mother saythat she went to or isgoing to collect anymoney for rental fromRiet,” Kok said.
“The sad part is thatRiet makes me out tobe a bad person andthe whole Bloemandasees me as the devil.
“He did not evenpay for services. Thatis why we are takingthe house – becausemy daughter receivesendless notices fromthe municipality.”
The Kapa BokoneCommunity Develop-ment Foundationstands with the com-munity and regardsthe evictions as inhu-man practice.
The organisationdeals with various so-cial ills across the
province and tries tointervene by involv-ing the relevant stake-holders.
Maku Maris, founder and chairper-son, emphasises thatthe Bloemanda titledeeds should be inves-tigated, because mostof the title deed own-ers have other proper-ties that they stay on.
She says their titledeeds should be takenaway or be reversed, because they lied togovernment aboutneeding a place tostay.
“These people liedto government andgotthe stands under afalse pretence whilethey saught comfortelsewhere,” says Mar-is.
“While staying onother properties thatthey own they makearrangements withoccupants to look aft-er their places. Afterthe RDP houses arebuilt they decide toclaim the houses. Wemust put a stop tothis.”
Maris says thatthese evictions espe-cially target RDPhouses where the peo-ple’s lives are ham-pered due to familiesbeing left destitute.
“Serious interven-tion is needed fromgovernment, as wedeal with an angrysociety where educa-tion is also hampered.Sometimes we end upwith the children be-ing emotionally affect-ed, resulting in poorperformance atschools.”

THE struggling SuperSport United have hadthe better of Phunya Sele Sele in recentseasons, but Wednesday’s (11/03) clash at theFree State Stadium could prove to be trickyfor Gordon Igesund’s troops.Matsatsantsa have lost two back-to-back
matches going into Wednesday’s fixture andthey have a mountain to climb when theycome up against a resurgent BloemfonteinCeltic side who are unbeaten so far this year.Siwelele appear to have been revitalised
under Clinton Larsen, who returned to theMangaung outfit late last year following thesacking of Ernst Middendorp.Under the guidance of Larsen, Celtic have
played six matches. They have won four, drawn one and lost one of those games –scoring nine times in the process whileconceding only two goals.“We are expecting a tough game against
United after they lost their previous twomatches. They will be coming to us likewounded lions. But we are going to makethings difficult for them,” John Maduka,Celtic manager, told Express.“We want to try and win all our home
matches so that we can climb higher andhigher on the log. I believe we can finish theseason on fourth position if we keep winninghome and away,” he said.Celtic are sitting at fourth position on
Quarter Three (Q3) after collecting 13 pointsin six matches. They trail leaders MamelodiSundowns by three points. Celtic have agame in hand though, but that does notguarantee points. However, Maduka said he believed his side
stood a good chance of winning the Q3.“We have a good team to compete with.
But we just need to concentrate on our gameand take our matches one at a time. If wewin our next two encounters against Unitedand Polokwane City, we can win it,” he said. All eyes will be on Celtic striker Lerato
Lamola, who has scored nine goals so farthis season. He is the Premier Soccer
League’s joint top-scorer with CuthbertMalajila of Mamelodi Sundowns. So, Lamola will be hoping to get his name
on the score sheet to increase his goal tally. The Limpopo-born hitman will rely heavily
on players such as Mukuka Mulenga, Musa
Nyatama and Thapelo Morena to supplypasses to him.On the other hand, United will be hoping
that striker Jeremy Brockie continues hisscoring form against Siwelele on Wednesday(11/03). The New Zealander has scored four
times in five matches since joining Matsat-santsa last December. He will be the man to watch for United,
but the likes of Kingston Nkhatha and ThusoPhala cannot be overlooked on the night. The kick-off is scheduled for 19:30.
