Cape Town Internation Airport Rail Link, South Africa: 2010 - 2011 Client: Kwezi V3 Scope of Services: Design and analysis of two elevated railway station structures of 125m and 185m in length. The larger proposed station is at Cape Town International Airport, the other being at Modderdam Road in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town. The structures comprise a concourse level as well as a rail / platform level. Due to the constraints prevalent on both sites i.e. heavily trafficked roadways on either side of the proposed station structures, extensive use is made of precast concrete construction. This serves to minimise the disruption to the roadways during the construction period. The concourse levels comprises pre-tensioned hollow core slabs spanning 7.708m and supported on precast spine beams at main and secondary frame locations. The rail / platform level comprises pre-tensioned U8 bridge beams acting compositely with a 200mm thick in-situ concrete deck slab. Lancaster Plus Bridge across the River Lee, Cork, Ireland: 2005 - 2006 Client: Niall Fitzsimons & Co. Scope of Services: The bridge provides access to a new hotel and residential development in Cork. For environmental reasons, river piers were not permissible; the bridge had to comprise a single span of 24m. Due to hydraulic freeboard requirements and the levels of the existing approach roads, a simply supported span was not feasible. The design put forward by EXSTRADO to meet these design constraints comprised a simply supported drop-in span of 15m length supported on large abutment cantilevers, which in turn are supported on a set of 900mm diameter tension and compression piles. Due to the fact that large hogging moments could now be developed at the abutments, the central drop in span could be made slender. It comprises precast concrete rectangular beams, curved in elevation, acting compositely with an in-situ concrete deck slab. The abutment cantilevers, with a mass of 62t, are in reinforced concrete, and are connected to the tension piles by means of diameter 50mm Macalloy bars prestressed to full working load. The design not only complied with all environmental, hydraulic and aesthetic requirements, but also has the added benefit that all construction works could take place from the riverbanks, with no disturbance to the river channel. The completed structure is clad in cut limestone, to yield the required architectural finish.

Maguga Dam Intake Tower Access Bridge, Swaziland: 2001 Client: Komati Dam Development Authority Scope of Services: Conceptual and detail design of the intake tower access bridge at Maguga Dam. The structure comprises simply supported voided deck slabs over two 25m spans in post-tensioned concrete. The structure was designed to withstand seismic effects with ground accelerations of up to 0.24g. In addition, large settlement differentials needed to be accommodated due to the fact that the structure is founded on the crown of the rock-fill dam. Design to TMH7, South African equivalent to BS5400. Berth 306, Port of Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: 1999 Client: Portnet Scope of Services: Design of Richards Bay Berth 306 (Coal Quay) extension. Due to the success of the pre-tensioned composite superstructure of Richards Bay Dry Bulk Jetty (ref. Following page), this structure was designed with identical pre-fabricated elements. The main structural differences, however, are that Berth 306 comprises a single 21 m span, berthing forces are resisted by a system of large diameter composite raking piles, the piles themselves are friction piles as opposed to end bearing piles and Berth 306 required a service tunnel along the cope face. Design to BS 5400 and SATS Harbour Manual.

Client: Kaplan Trust Scope of Services: Design of the reinforced concrete structure supported on Franki Piles. Most notably, conceptual and detail design of the ø 8,60 m, 5,55m high helical staircase, which completes 1

1/4 revolutions whilst being supported only at its ends. The staircase is the central

architectural feature of the museum. The detailing of the support sections presented a particular challenge, due to the high vertical and torsional shear stresses prevalent there, as well as large bi-axial moments. The section varies in depth from 650mm at its supports, to 350mm at the midspan sections. The cross section is trapezoidal, in order to maintain the position of its centroid as close as possible to the axis of the staircase. Design to SABS 0160, South African equivalent to BS8110.
