Hybrid cloud is a hot topic today across industries. The opportunity to rapidly add capacity without major capex investments makes cloud resources attractive, but companies understandably have concerns about extending infrastructure beyond their own datacenters. Will datacenter extension make infrastructure management too complex? Can you be sure that your data will be secure? Do the benefits of cloud justify the effort required to make changes to process and rethink existing models? Microsoft’s approach to hybrid is centered on choice. We believe that you should always have the ability to run workloads in your datacenter, in Microsoft Azure, or in a service provider cloud based on the specific needs of your business. Your datacenter connected to your cloud, in whatever configuration makes the most sense and offers the most benefit. And to make hybrid work, we emphasize: Flexible infrastructure: Flexibility means that you should be able to create true hybrid applications that bridge the datacenter and the cloud. You should be able to move workloads to the cloud or bring them back on premises as your demands shift. Consistent platform: consistency across clouds is one of our primary design goals, and we’re working every day to make it easier to function in a hybrid mode. A great example is the consistent virtualization platform, so you can easily move Hyper-V VMs to Azure using Azure infrastructure as a service. Cost-effective resources: Because of the scale of cloud environments, cloud resources can be significantly less expensive than adding capacity to your existing datacenter. We’ll talk today about some really specific examples of places where the cloud makes sense for cost reduction. The bottom line is that when you think about a hybrid strategy, it isn’t just about computing capacity. We’ve thought about every layer of the stack from a hybrid perspective, and we’ve developed solutions that take advantage of the unique value proposition of the cloud.

Objective: Develop the need to look beyond virtualization for benefits, to question why business is turning to shadow/rogue IT. Key Points: Key to running a smooth IT operation is stability and control. Incoming work is planned for, scheduled and executed in a coordinated way to ensure minimal disruption to workloads. In this environment virtualization of physical servers has been an incredibly effective means for the past 10 years, driving cost savings and efficiencies with minimum disruption to workloads. But, according to recent studies, many organizations are starting to approach the limit of virtualization benefits and are asking “what’s next?”. They need look no further than their own business customers who are voting with their budgets and spending directly on public cloud services – bypassing the in-house IT department.

Objective: Highlight the opportunity for IT to be a driver of business growth rather than just do the same with less Key Points: While IT strives to maintain a stable, controlled environment, on the business side of the fence the world is very different. Business needs services and applications to support internal and external needs and with the advent of Mobile, Social, Big Data and cloud the volume of applications and rate of change have exploded. Development cycle times have shrunk to the point that the traditional Dev-IT deployment handoff is non longer possible – this is the world of DevOps. The business needs a more agile IT organization to support their needs – IT needs to upshift and virtualization alone is not enough. How can IT departments learn from public clouds like Azure and get back in the game?

Objective: Establish cloud service delivery as the way to bridge between the IT need for stability and the agility needs of the business. Microsoft is unique in enabling each customer to pursue their own journey to the cloud – and back – without fear of the one-way journey “lock-in” that Amazon AWS or Google AppEngine threatens. Key Points: Cloud service delivery bridges the IT need for stability and control with the growing agility and DevOps needs of the Business. It’s the reason developers in the Business are using agile, consumer-like 3rd party cloud resources like Azure to provision a VM in minutes rather than the weeks it can take with the in-house IT department. In addition to agility and control, cloud service delivery also needs a high degree of flexibility to serve the unique needs of the Business. Flexibility and choice cover a range of technology choices in areas such as development tools, operating systems, ISV applications, VM images but core to Microsoft’s cloud platform vision is the ability for every customer to pursue their own journey to optimize their use of cloud now and in the future. Many other vendors don’t offer this choice as they do not have the needed on-premises platform effectively locking the customer into their public cloud platform.

Chapter 1 is a very important chapter so spend some adequate time on it as there are some important questions on the exam covering this materials. Spend time on IaaS, PaaS and SaaS as there are exam questions on this. Delivering the message around putting all the public cloud services together making up a holistic approach is something you want to cover right up front.. Take some time to talk to the slide, in this instance. Explain how the Business Owner runs the applications and sets up the users. Each Microsoft public cloud-based service is a formidable tool in its own right. But it’s when you put them all together, creating an ecosystem of services and devices, that they really shine. Just imagine a scenario in which features like Office 365, Microsoft Intune, and Azure work with services like Windows Server, Dynamics CRM Online, and Skype For Business. all connected to your various devices. No matter where you travel, these services and your data travel with you. Even better, you leave all the hardware and maintenance to Microsoft, freeing you to focus on running your business.

A comprehensive approach to identity and access management is not a nice to have – it’s at the core of an efficient workforce.   To keep their employees as productive as possible, companies need to provide a single identity that works across cloud and on-premises assets. With Identity Federation and Single Sign-On Users have one set of login credentials and passwords. And IT is able to more efficiently manage user identity.   And when users do forget passwords, they have the ability to reset their own passwords – reducing the burden on IT and making the user more efficient by being able to resolve the issue quickly.   Security remains paramount. Users have the ability to bring new devices into the enterprise, but IT can validate that devices connecting to the network are owned and controlled by individuals with the appropriate credentials. And all of this is that much more important when working in a hybrid model.   Hybrid Identity offers multiple benefits, including providing IT with tools for monitoring suspicious activity on the network - such as an employee accessing their expenses account from the San Francisco office at 9am and logging in from Hong Kong 45 minutes later! Data getting into the wrong hands can be a costly and embarrassing business. Nobody wants to be Target. But even less spectacular breaches can damage your business or lead to serious consequences, especially in industries with stringent regulation. Businesses need to keep their data protected as much as possible – striking a balance between user productivity and data protection.
