We’re Western Canada’s first university . We say it with pride . With that reputation, comes notions of stability, strength, and dependability . The University of Manitoba has a very strong foundation, providing a firm ground for Extended Education to leap from – quickly and with agility . It’s this responsiveness that delivers true value to our community . From Post Baccalaureate programs in E-Learning to our Project Management course, we have our eyes trained on education that meets the immediate and future needs of individuals and business organizations . In short, we extend the academic power of the University of Manitoba to address current challenges and to seize future opportunities . It’s only the beginning, and I personally look forward to the many new innovative initiatives that Extended Education will bring to your community .

We have witnessed a lot of unpleasant things in the past decade . Credit markets nearly decimated the global economy . More and more service sector jobs move to the far reaches of Asia . And the cost of bacon has increased dramatically . It’s a different world out there – loaded with insecurity, and the real fear of settling on bo-logna and eggs for breakfast .

It’s easy to feel helpless . However, individuals and businesses can help themselves . It takes work, study, and dedication, but through constant attention to training, education, and even more re-train-ing, employees and employers can maintain the necessary com-petitive edge to succeed personally and professionally . In short, education must maintain the same pace as experience on a C .V .

That’s where Extended Education steps in.

When Gary Hepburn, Dean of Extended Education, says, “We’re extending the academic power of University of Manitoba’s re-sources to the community”, he’s speaking to every community . That includes working professionals, businesses, and professional organizations . The goal is two-fold: to provide real educational tools that will help employees stay competitive in their jobs and to maintain a solid professional trajectory, and to work with busi-nesses and organizations to develop and launch educational plat-forms that address immediate and future needs .

Gary says, “Now, more than ever, it’s critical for individuals and business organizations to react quickly to changing market forces . While they are often reactive, the University of Manitoba must be proactive .” Gary goes on to say that, “Extended Education mines and processes the University’s resources, then produces applied programs, courses, and corporate training solutions that meet the needs of our community … all in a nimble, responsive, and fo-cused way” .

The University of Manitoba’s Extended Education recognizes the need for perpetual learning and training . It’s no longer only for the ambitious . Competitive forces are making it necessary for individuals and employers to develop learning objectives and training to ensure that they aren’t left behind . Additional educa-tion isn’t just a “nice to have” part of the C .V . It’s now a “must-have” .

Turning competitive challenges into opportunities through Extended Education

contact hours and five to six courses .• Post-Baccalaureate Certificate - acredential that you can add to

your Bachelor’s degree .• Letter of Accomplishment (LOA)– Less intensive in time and

course load than a certificate, an LOA delivers a lighter, yet relevant, credential .

We now offer a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program in E-Learning and a streamlined program that awards a Letter of Accomplishment . ProgramUpdateHumanResourceManagementAfter an in-depth program evaluation by Extended Education’s Program Review Committee, and an examination of the exhaustive competency framework introduced by the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA) in 2014, we’ve initiated course modifications and additions to strengthen the relationship between the HRM certificate and the HR community in general . In addition, the changes we’re implementing will help students find greater success in the field, and will help many to create a path towards the prestigious Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation .

You rush in the morning to feed the kids, get them dressed, get their lunches together, and shuttle them off to the school bus . You don’t want to be late for work either . You always want to maintain the appearance of professionalism . But you stop to think, “I hope they’ve got their shoes on the right feet” .

Too bad you didn’t stop to think if your socks were matching . Because today, you didn’t notice that they were different colours .

Sometimes life can really sock it to you . No matter what your situation, whether you have kids, starting a family, or simply get-ting off the starting block, you’re just too busy . The work/life bal-ance teeters like a carnival ride . You can’t imagine adding educa-tion into an already volatile mixture . The last thing you want to do is to treat your already time-strapped life like a baking soda and vinegar mixture . After all, you don’t have time to clean the mess .

However, no matter how fast life moves, you have to move with it . That includes maintaining the professional trajectory you set out for yourself . And that often means training, education, and more training . Getting ahead in the world demands a lifetime of learning .

Staying upright with the personal, professional

and educational balancing act.

24/7 LIVING IN A

25/8 WORLD

You can breathe easy . Most post-secondary institutions recog-nize the needs and demands placed on adult learners . There are many educational tools that help–flexible course start dates; large windows of time for program completion; blended course work; online classes . All of these assist time-strapped adults to achieve their educational goals .

Going back to school doesn’t have to mean physically going to school . According to Certificate in Management and Administra-tion alumnus Joel Billing, “Driving into the city an hour and a half both ways was not a viable option for my family, but having U of M offer this course via online delivery has allowed me to create a really nice work/life balance for this field of study” . It’s an option that works for many students . And it ultimately assists them in their work . As Joel says, “Each course has so far held very applica-ble material that is relevant and appropriate to what I want to be as a manager” .

The results of different educational delivery options can be sur-prising . Many students find that they can achieve more in short-er periods of time . Take Human Resource Management alumna/speed studier Tamara Cranen for example . She says, “Through Extended Education, I have been able to complete two Certifi-cates from the University of Manitoba within a four year period . Originally, I set out to complete my HRM however, with the ease of online registration and condensed summer courses, I was able to complete all the required courses in 16 month’s time .”

Even if a student chooses online delivery, they’re not left alone in the digital ether to sort their way through . Instructors and ad-visors are always available . It’s something Debbie Kelly, Certificate in Adult and Continuing Education alumna, found very helpful . “Sometimes doing the program online can be difficult – you have to be very disciplined and able to put some time aside – and the instructors made that very easy for me to do”, she says .

So if you’ve reached this point of the article, good for you . There’s a good chance that your socks were hastily mismatched in the busy start to your day, but at least you’ve learned that there are ways to reach new heights in your profession, without needing to add an hour to the day, and another day to your week . You can do this .

For many, a Bachelor’s degree is the bedrock that forms the foundation for a solid future . You simply need to look forward to what your degree can do . Whether your major is Art History or Geology, you have the unique opportunity to put it to work, or to add more to it .

There is a tangible strength to your degree that goes beyond your specific area of study . If you have a degree, then you have the skills that will guide your future trajectory . You’ve shown an ability to think through complex, theoretical issues, and provide an answer backed by thorough evidence and proof points . You’ve contributed in class when challenged by a professor . Group proj-ects are old hat . You’ve overcome the butterflies to stand in front of your peers to present your work . While you were focusing on the theoretical elements of study, you were honing your “soft skills” – probably without knowing it .

Now you can gain applied skills, targeted to specific professions, which connect to the needs of industry and employers . You can give your degree some direction with a Post-Baccalaureate Cer-tificate .

One of the few programs of its kind, Extended Education from the University of Manitoba is implementing the Post-Baccalaure-ate Certificates in a growing number of areas .

AEROSPACE PROGRAM MANAGEMENTAim high with the Aerospace Program Management Certifi-

cate . Direct your focus on the aerospace industry if you are, or plan to become, a project production and operational manager, design engineer, or procurement and logistic specialist . With this advanced credential, you’ll develop an understanding of the com-plete life cycle of an aerospace system—from initial identification of system requirements; to the design, manufacturing and mar-keting; to ongoing employment and maintenance .

APPLIED LEADERSHIPTake the lead with the Applied Leadership Certificate . If you’re

a leader in your workplace or industry, this program will enhance and expand your leadership potential to inspire change and in-novation in yourself, and those who follow you . The program fo-cuses on deepening core competencies of successful leadership – including transformation leadership skills, communication skills, change management and project management .

E-LEARNINGBring your expertise to the digital classroom with the Certif-

icate in E-Learning . If you’re an educator, workplace trainer, or instructional designer, you’ll gain the necessary knowledge and skills to lead instructional design projects and apply e-learning technologies in day-to-day design and teaching . Designed for new or experienced workplace trainers and educators, the two-streamed program offers a theory-based, yet hands-on approach to using instructional systems and learning technologies to design and/or deliver educational materials .
