Why Book Clubs?

To learn to read well, all students need to read thought-provoking, age-appropriate books. They also need to respond thoughtfully to books by discussing and writing what they read.

Reading directly affects student achievement.

We are Media Specialists, reading is what we do!

Raphael, Taffy E., Susan Florio-Ruane, and MariAnne George. "Book Club Plus: A Conceptual Framework to Organize Literacy Instruction." Language Arts 79.2 (November 2001): 159-168.

How do I fit it in?

Make it part of your RBES.

Pick books from the past Reader Rally list since you already have multiple copies. Make a plan for the activities you want to do with the books.

When planning the activities think of alternative ways to enrich the book clubs.

Discussion Questions Students are given 2 weeks to read

the book they choose.

Students discuss both the notes they wrote as well as questions I prepare.

Students discuss the book twice. Once when they are half way through the book and again when they have finished the book.

Literary Focus Activities

During some of the books we also focus on an additional literary concept in addition to the discussion questions or journal responses. Character TraitsSetting

Journal Responses

This is in addition to the classroom discussions and is written in their reading journal.

One journal response is completed for each book. They have a choice of two journal responses. They write their responses as homework.

Journal Responses

Their journal responses counts as a grade for them for their classroom teacher.

Journal responses allow the students to think deeper about the book they read.
