  • Results and department summaries

    2016 - 2017

    Founded in 1536

  • Welcome to Extra-Curricular at Coopers Coborn

As a former student, and now staff member, I am continually inspired by the variety of opportunities

available at the school. I clearly remember the Headteacher at the time I joined the school, as a

starry-eyed year 7 in 1995, saying Coopers is like a jam-sandwich, the more you put in the more you

will get out!. This is certainly true of the extra-curricular at the school; indeed an immersive,

proactive, approach towards life at Coopers Coborn will develop important character building

qualities needed for success in life.

This document attempts to highlight those opportunities that each department offered to the

students last academic year. It is a truly astonishing read and one that makes me extremely proud of

this outstanding pillar of the school. This exciting offering would not be possible without the time,

dedication and commitment given by so many staff of the school; they are the reason why this facet

    of the school flourishes.

The recent Good Schools Guide review, from earlier this year, sums up the philosophy at Coopers

    Coborn very well:

Although the school is very academic, we found it to be the antithesis of an

exam factory, offering a broad and liberal education, with a major emphasis on

extracurricular activities that all students are expected to get involved in.

Good Schools Guide review, 2016 (for the full review please see our website).

This school is a special place with fantastic students, outstanding staff and fully supportive parents

that all help to create the can do ethos which can be felt thoughout. I do hope you enjoy having a

small glimpse into what makes Coopers Coborn such a unique school full of opportunities.

    Year summary from Mr Ferreira

Year 9 PiXL Up for Debate: This years competition was held at Alleyns School, Dulwich. With a quick turnaround to prepare for the competition we performed to our best against a much stiffer competition than last year. Unfortunately we struggled to win the early rounds and did not qualify for the final. We all learn more about debating and will take this into next years competition. Oxford Schools: This year the competition was held at Clapton Girls' Academy, East London. It was a hard fought competition with our teams performing excellently in the debates. However, we narrowly missed qualifying for the national finals. Cambridge Schools: This year the competition was held at Colfes School in London. Once again this was a tough competition in which Coopers Coborn debating teams performed well. However, we did not make the final and hence did not qualify for the national final. Debating Matter: This year St. Martins School, Brentwood, hosted the local finals in which we were drawn to a

three way tie for the competition. The judges felt that we had ultimately preformed better and we were invited to

the reginal finals at the Barbican Theatre. This was a hard fought round where we reached the final. Our team

performed brilliantly and judges took a while to decide that the other team will go through to the National final.

Rotary Youth Speak: After a long sabbatical from this competition we participated in the Brentwood round. This was an excellent experience for the team and lessons were learnt. However, the Brentwood School team was judged the winner. Well done to all our debaters and speakers. Im sure we will continue to learn from our participation and come out fighting next year. Mr Ferreira
