The Department of Arequipa (with approximately one million inhabitants) is
located in the south-western part of the country. The city of Arequipa is about 3
hours away from several beaches, 3 hours away from the Colca Canyon, 4 hoursfrom Puno, and 8 hours from Cusco. The city of Arequipa sits in a valley
surrounded by 20,000 ft tall mountains and volcanoes. Teachers who come to
Arequipa can enjoy exploring the city (horseback riding, site-seeing, etc) as well
as visiting famous tourist spots in Peru (Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, etc). We
are also 8 hours away from Arica, Chile, ideal for border runs to renew visas!

Q: How much teaching experience do I need?A: While some teaching experienced is preferred, it is not necessary. The
only necessary requirements are completion of the TEFL or CELTA
course and a bachelors degree.
Q: What attributes do successful candidates posses?A: Important qualities that we look for are a great attitude about working
in a third world country, charisma, and patience. Teaching in Peru isdifferent from teaching in other countries so you will need time toadjust to the city, culture, and your students. Even though most
students are motivated to learn English, patience is required becauseof the different habits (arriving late, absences, etc) students have.Charisma is necessary to establish and maintain motivation in theclassrooms. Also, Extreme does various activities to create a relaxedenvironment for teachers. However, we still expect teachers to beresponsible, arrive on time and prepare for classes ahead of time.
Q: What kinds of benefits does Extreme offer?A: While we cant provide typical job benefits (health insurance, paid
vacation time, etc), we do assist and provide the following:- finding flights and busses from Lima to Arequipa- first two nights of your stay in a hostel in Arequipa- assist you with apartment hunting
- discounted prices for Spanish classes- monthly social activities for teachers

Q: Will I need a visa?
A: Teachers do not need a special visa; a 180 day tourist visa given automatically uponentering Peru is sufficient. Our teachers do have a special status as visitingteachers. This paperwork is completed after arrival by our HR department. Before
you arrive you will be given a letter of invitation to present to customs and
immigration in case you should have any problems. You can also use this letter ofinvitation when you do a border run every 6 months to renew your visa.
Q: How long is the contract for?
A: We usually look for candidates who can and want to stay from 6 months to 1 year, although candidates are welcome to stay longer if they desire.
Q: Can I afford to live internationally?
A: Peru is an amazing land, still culturally tied to its Inca past. As a developing nation,
our students cant afford to pay a lot for their courses. Therefore, we can not pay
for airfare or housing of teachers. That said, the cost of living is very low comparedwith most of the world and our teachers are able to live a comfortable life on theirwages. Here are some examples of the costs you can expect while living inArequipa.
