EXTREMELY RARE SCALLOPED 20 CENT

The Royal Australian Mint, Royal Mint (London) and the Royal Canadian Mint struck Australia's 20 cent coins in 1981.

Britain's Royal Mint were also striking Hong Kong $2 coins at the same time, but a mix up happened and a very small number (approximately 8 known) of Australian 20 cents were struck on the scalloped shape Hong Kong $2 blank.

Mint's around the world do occasionally make mistakes! During the minting process, the blanks are fed into a press and struck. During the changeover to striking a different coin, mint staff may have thought the hopper was empty, but a few scalloped blanks could be stuck in the bottom.

These errors do not appear on the market very often and when they show up, they are eagerly sought after. This 20 cent was found at the time of issue and sold through Noble Numismatics Sydney Auction, March 2014, lot 72 with newspaper clippings about the find.

AFGHAN CAMELEERS 50¢

ENCAPSULATED,CARDED,

UNC $10.00

The Afghan cameleers who travelled to Australia from 1859 made a significant contribution to the exploration of Australia's inland, and to the development of Australia as a multicultural nation. To commemorate their work, the Royal Australian Mint has released a special 50 cent uncirculated coin.

In 1859, the Victorian Expedition Committee commissioned the import of 24 camels and three cameleers from India, to join the pioneering expedition of Burke and Wills. This was the start of a significant contribution made to Australia's inland development by many cameleers who came to Australia from India, Pakistan, Af-ghanistan, Turkey and elsewhere.

ENCAPSULATED, CASED, MINTAGE 2500, FDC $85.00

The Royal Australian Mint has also issued a 99.9% pure silver proof 50 cent honouring the Afghan Cameleers with a small mintage of just 2500 coins struck.

The Spanish vessel El Cazador with its crew and tons of Spanish silver vanished during a winter night of January 1784 while en route from Vera Cruz Mexico to the port of New Orleans.

For over 200 years El Cazador's silver cache lay in a pile at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico until quite accidentally fisherman discovered the wreck in August 1993. Initially thought to be rocks, clusters of coins spilled from the nets onto the deck of their boat. El Cazador's journey was alive again!

These coins were minted in Mexico City before 1783 and were part of El Cazador's cargo. Each coin is accompanied by certificate of origin and a tag signed by treasure salvager Craig A. Boyd.

Although not the rarest Australian numismatic item, the majority of coin collectors know, that the most sought-after Australian coin is the 1930 Penny.

No pennies were ordered by the Federal Treasury during the height of the depression in 1930, but the following year, a small order of around half a million coins was placed.

The 1930 penny is the key coin to obtaining a full date set of Australian pre-decimal issues. The level of publicity associated with this popular bronze coin has resulted in a demand which is continually pushing up the price, considering there is between 1500-3000 surviving examples known to exist.

Struck by the Melbourne Mint, this genuine Australian 1930 One Pennyis a perfect entry level gap filler for someone looking to complete their penny set or Australian pre-decimal collection.

NEW ZEALAND COLONIAL £50

On February 6, 1840 the Waitangi Treaty had been signed, which allowed settlers to enter New Zealand. The Union Bank of Australia established its first office in Port Nicholson, now known as Wellington, issuing New Zealand's first banknote. From 1840-1934, a total of 14 colonial trading banks had been established issuing around 150 various notes.

The Bank of New Zealand was incorporated in 1861 and commenced business on the 16th October that same year in Queen Street, Auckland. Branches were operating in Dunedin, Wellington, Nelson and London by 1862.

In 1872, the bank moved into Australia, opening in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Adelaide.

Printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. engravers in London, this superb fifty pound colour trial has specimen imprinted twice and a notation on the left edge "as submitted 12/4/1910".

Today, New Zealand's colonial notes are gaining numismatic recognition world-wide for their genuine rarity and desirability as classic works of art.

1951 PL PROOF THREEPENCE & SIXPENCE PAIR

In 1951, the Royal Mint in London were commissioned to strike a portion of Australia's circulating silver coinage. Following normal tradition, the Royal Mint struck a very small quantity of each denomination in proof - specifically for designers, members of parliament and heads of state. The mintage of only 20 of each type was so tiny that it is extremely rare to find these in superb FDC.

The term 'proof' refers to a coins method of manufacture, not its state of preservation. Australian proof coins are struck from polished or specially prepared dies and have near brilliant surfaces with perfect detail.

The 'PL' mintmark is an abbreviation of the Latin term Pecunia Londinii which translates as Money of London. An alternate Latin phrase, Percussa Londinio, which translates as Struck at London.

This 1951 PL Proof Pair were struck in very small numbers compared to the 60 million standard circulation issues for that year.
