Fused Magazine and Area Culture Guide’s very own annual celebration of illustration, artists and photographers returns to Birmingham and this year we are setting up camp in Digbeth, the creative hub of the city.
The free event, that takes place over one evening and two days, celebrates the best of visual pop culture with one-off installations, street art, workshops, talks and performance.
For 2014 we’ve invited fashionista favourite, Daisy de Villeneuve, who’ll be leading an illustration masterclass using one-off designs created exclusively for Eye Candy.
Paris-based artist Fafi makes a rare visit to Birmingham, where she will make a bespoke wall-based mural for Eye Candy. Influenced by Japanese pop culture, Fafi creates illustrations of women which upset the stereotypical image of femininity.
A welcome return to Eye Candy is Miss Led who produced her first major mural on a car park wall at last year’s event.
She is joined by Anna Garforth, who produced the stunning wooden Geo-Fox which is still on the side wall of Southside’s Loft Lounge bar. Both artists will create new large-scale works for the 2014 festival.
Eye Candy 2014 includes installation and 3D design with 3D paper engineer Sam Pierpoint who brings large paper models of bugs to the walls of Boxxed.
Textile artist Felt Mistress brings a new creation The Great Advisor; a three-metre tall character made of felt who can answer your deepest (or most trivial) problems.
A photography exhibition of street-style will give new insight into youth culture, presented in association with the photographic agency PYMCA. To launch this we have invited Sylvain Sylvain of New York Dolls who presents Bowery Butterflies - Stories and Songs from 70’s Underground New York.
To stick with the music theme illustrator Newtasty highlights some of the lesser know geniuses of rock n’ roll with They Were Kings - an exhibition of the men and women still holding down day jobs and other means of surviving while giving selflessly to art and music year after year.
Visitors can witness the live creation of a large-scale mural over two days with Brothers of the Stripe, an all-male collective of illustrators and image makers, and there will be plenty of chances to have-a-go at creating your own artworks and prints alongside the group of 12.
Over the 3 days visitors will get the chance to produce their own work, screen prints, photography and more with a selection of immersive and engaging workshops, talks and interventions with Girls Who Draw, Cachetejack, Camera Obscura, Make it Sewcial, Column and Cut it Up.
Welcome to eye candy 2014

fafi LIVE DRAW | MASTERCLASS13-15 NOV AT BOXXED
masterclass!
From animating and directing music videos for Lily Allen, Mark Ronson, M.I.A, and Azealia Banks to producing comic books, Fafi has traveled the globe as one of the premier female street artists in the world.
By exploring femininity through stereotypes and using them to her advantage, Fafi ’s unique style of portraying beautiful, sassy characters, has made her the go-to girl for brands who are looking for some Parisian cheekiness. Countless magazines such as Vogue and Elle alongside big brand collaborations with Adidas, M.A.C, Hennessy, Swatch, Samsung and Le SportSac, not to mention many solo and prestigious group shows in the most respected galleries around the globe, makes Fafi a one-woman art whirlwind.
For Eye Candy Fafi will produce a new street piece in the city and will be running a masterclass. See eyecandyfestival.co.uk for masterclass times.

talk
Currently putting together the fi nishing touches to her latest book in Paris fashionista favourite Daisy De Villeneuve has certainly made a name for herself thanks to collaborations with Topshop, LVMH, Nike, Vogue and publisher Random House.
Her distinctive style of felt tip illustrations has been commissioned for packaging on bottles of Moet & Chandon, ranges for cosmetic giants Boots and for clothing at the V&A. She has even designed a special Oyster Card holder to celebrate 25 years of the British Fashion Council.
For Eye Candy Daisy will take an art masterclass signing and customising templates that she has specifi cally created. There will also be the chance to ask questions with our Q&A, and Daisy will do a reading from one of her illustrated books. See eyecandyfestival.co.uk for masterclass times.

masterclass!
Last year Miss Led produced her fi rst large-scale piece for Eye Candy on a car park wall in the city centre, all in the middle of high wind and sheet-like rain. The stunning piece was true to form - a beautiful image of a girl: her signature style. Miss Led’s work features females in all their beauty - from her delicate pencil drawn pieces (like our cover) to her more bolder works.
For Eye Candy Miss Led has decided to turn her skills to the foyer at Boxxed with a new design. She will also be taking a masterclass.See eyecandyfestival.co.uk for masterclass times.

Residing in the nature-fi lled countryside of Dorset certainly has an impact on Sam’s work. From her studio (a quaint log cabin at the bottom of the garden) she creates dreamy and magical artwork.
“My fun and whimsical illustrations are inspired by Mother Nature, wildlife and travel. I have a huge obsession with pattern, which always fi nds its way into my work. It often contains fusions of architectural, geometric, cultural and natural patterns to create vibrant and rich pieces. I handcraft all of my 3D creations out of a range of fi ne quality papers, before photographing and editing the images digitally, to create each fi nished piece.”
For Eye Candy Sam will be producing a set of creepy 3D bugs which will crawl the walls of Boxxed.

Multi-disciplinary artist and designer Anna Garforth uses her diverse skills to uniquely capture the aesthetics of nature and transform the world around us. Not one to be defi ned by an individual medium her works transgress materials and styles but all have one thing in common; unique beauty.
For Eye Candy Anna will be collaborating with furniture maker and set designer Dale Stephens to produce a 6 panel piece which will be displayed at the front of Boxxed.

Much in-demand textile artist Felt Mistress’s (AKA Louise Evans) latest collaboration with Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) and Monsterism creator Pete Fowler saw her character creation ‘John Evans’ star in Rhys’ latest video Lost Tribes. Originally training in fashion Louise’s stunning character design stems from year’s working as a couture dressmaker and now sees that relationship come full-circle with her characters starring in a Stylist magazine shoot in their annual September fashion edition.
For Eye Candy Felt Mistress presents the 3 meter tall Great Advisor. Problems making decisions? Not sure whether to get that perm? Does your shed need creosoting? Ask him a question then take an advice slip from his basket, dilemma solved.

13-15 NOV AT BOXXED
THE STYLE HERITAGE OF YOUTH CULTURE > PYMCAWords: Peter Paul Hartnett
PYMCA - Photographic Youth Music Culture Archive
Quietly simmering gently for over a decade Jon Swinstead of PYMCA has skillfully collected together work by the best of national and international photographers with
a passion for street and club culture.
Swinstead’s paced strategy has been to save potentially sinking cultural treasure that deserves global recognition. Year-by-year staff such as James Brett reach their white-gloved tentacles into the most unexpected sections of society in search of insightful visual documentation by all manner of photographers and writers, delivering style heritage with substance. Such work is then swooped upon by curators, making a ‘street’ to V&A step look so easy.
The PYMCA site (pymca.com) is a visual beehive, swarming with picture editors in search of images from the dawn of Photography to now. Alongside industry insiders from the world of Advertising to Music, there are students of Fashion Design, Photography and Fashion-related areas such as Styling and PR, clicking through the vast Education section; style stalking in amongst every youth tribe that I will not list here as it is so extensive. From Teds to... you get the picture.
Swinstead and his team seek out the most seductive aspect of style: the unexpected. It is
the originators and innovators that form the solid backbone to the archive, with the focus extending to early adopters that makes fashion forecasting companies appear to be somewhat lagging along with early mainstreamers.
Sure, in amongst sections that explore and refl ect everything from forty years of PUNK to strutting peacocks on the cobbles of Somerset House during the feeding frenzy of Fashion Week, there’ll be the inclusion of normcore, but such images are always selected with a certain eye. Anything but, ahem, a Rex Features approach.
It is the resourcefulness of youth that excites Swinstead, from one style cycle to the one that quickly emerges as a consequence, or angry reaction to. The meticulous archiving of youth culture is vital, essential, as such momentary history is vulnerable, at risk of being lost.
No gallery, as yet, exists for the collecting of such material anywhere in the world. No gallery, as yet, regularly hosts work by photographers such as Ray
13@EyeCandyFest
Stevenson, Janette Beckman, Derek Ridgers, Caroline Coon, Gavin Watson, Sheila Rock or the new wave of photographers, such as Molly Macindoe and Dean Davies of TRIP magazine.
PYMCA is of value and global importance in terms of the vast strata of social and fashion history that it holds. Whilst digital fi les are of immediate commercial use to television networks and publishers such as Phaidon, Laurence King and Harper Collins, it is the Fine Art work of printers such as Bob Wiskin (Grade One Photographic), Debbie Sears (Debbie Sears In Black & White) and Peter Guest (The Image) that collectors are now excitedly investing in and knocking on the door of PYMCA’s offi ce to get their white gloves upon.
PYMCA, a mix of ingredients... simmering away quietly for over a decade... now ready to serve.
Peter Paul Hartnett releases a new work to be published by Autopsy, Easter2015, from the series Sex : Male. hartnett.co.uk

Nuria and Raquel of Cachetejack are heading to Birmingham with colour and fun on their minds and they’ll need YOU to be willing participants.
The duo will be looking for arms and hands (or whatever else you are willing to give up) for their hand-painted tattoo studio set up. Using paints and fresh designs you’ll get to choose what you’d like to adorn your person for a temporary inking.
You’ll also be able to show off your tattoo using their fun photo booth.

Column Arts Agency bring together their pool of talent to present a unique exhibition combining photography and live illustration. The team will be creating one-of-a-kind portraits of dancers which they will then turn in to pieces of art with each artist manipulating the image with their individual illustration style.
The team will also be turning their hands to visitor portraits by setting up a photo booth with a difference: get your picture taken and then see what the artists do to turn it in to a personalised one-off piece to take away.

Girls Who Draw present ‘Marine Life’ exploring life above and under the sea with a series of screen printing activities and drawing workshops.
For their drop-in workshop on Friday you’ll get to use hand cut stencils to experiment with screen print layers of different colours to produce a piece of your own marine inspired art.
On Saturday they will create a series of marine habitats with colourful coral reefs, kelp forests and sea grass meadows. Then throughout the day they will be drawing the inhabitants such as exotic fi sh, fl ying sea birds, swimming sea mammals, quirky crustaceans and scaly reptiles. Come and add sea creatures of your own or do some large scale colouring and help bring the scenes to life.

If you’d like to have a go at printing then The Culture Cart will be around for two days to help you make your own piece of art to take away.
For Eye Candy they are building a temporary print workshop with large-scale woodblock printing.
They’ll also be bringing their print bike (a very cute mobile unit) that gives you the opportunity to make a small print really quickly and easily. No need to get too messy - unless you want to!
