ri Vekkali Amman's posture at the famous temple in Woraiyur in Tiruchi, by itself, is unique in several

    aspects.

Firstly, the presiding deity faces north, a specific direction usually meant for blessing the devotees ith

victory in their endeavour or initiative. !t is because of "ri Vekkali Amman's posture toards the northern

direction, that a fe #hola rulers used to orship $er before proceeding to the battlefield.

%sually, "ri Amman, in $er sitting posture, has the left leg folded and the right leg in a resting position. &ut,

at this temple, the posture is quite unusual. The right leg is in folded form and the left leg in the resting

position. The left leg is seen kept on the Asuran.

egend has it that to be seated in this form, it requires a lot of energy and poer to keep the Asura (evil)

    forces under check.

$ence, "ri Vekkali Amman used $er e*traordinary poer to control the Asuran and hence the change in the

    sitting posture.

The legend has also a reference to the competition beteen ord +ataraa and -oddess ali in a dance

performance. ord +ataraa, during the performance, changed $is leg.

!n response, "ri ali changed $er sitting posture at this temple.

All around the sanctum sanctorum, a pair of the holy feet (padham') of "ri Vekkali Amman has been set up.

" -ovindara, the temple priest, says that "ri Vekkali Amman's posture signifies kindness, love, affection

    and compassion to $er devotees.

The upper right hand carries a /0amaru' (a /udukkai' ith a snake rolled over it)1 loer right hand carries

Tirusoolam1 the left upper hand /paasam'1 and the left loer hand /kabalam'. The holy head of "ri Vekkali

Amman signifies nine /Agni alai' or sacred flames ith a snake embedded across it.

    2ther idols

The other idols at the temple3 The temple has several important idols around its /prakaram'.

They include "ri Vallaba -anapathy1 "ri Visalakshi and "ri Visanathar1 "ri 4ayura 4urugar along ith $is

#onsorts "ri Valli and "ri 0evasena1 athavarayan, 5eriyannan and 4adurai Veeran. A special feature is that

the processional idol of "ri Vekkali Amman and the stone idol of "ri 0urgai have been set up in a single

    shrine.

    Uraiyur Vekkali Amman

Uraiyur in Trichy can be called a ‘temple town’ because of the prescence of several temples. One such place of

worship is ‘Vekkali Amman Temple’. The temple has a hoary past. History

and spirituality are inetricably intertwined with Uraiyur.

The deity faces north and it is believed that !ods and !oddesses who

personify valour and chivalry and face north will bless kin!s with victory in a

war. Thus" all kin!s used to propitiate Vekkali Amman before proceedin! to

    the battlefield.

#arama $univar had an eotic !arden and used to offer flowers to lord

Thayumanavan and used to adorn the deity with !arlands. $eanwhile"

%ranthakan" a florist" was enchanted with the variety of flowers and decided

to !ive them to the kin! to create a rapport with him. Thus" %ranthakan"

without the permission of #arama $univar" kept supplyin! flowers to the

    kin!.

The sa!e found that the flowers were missin! in his !arden and kept a vi!il. To his utter shock and disbelief" he

found that %ranthakan was the culprit. The sa!e told the kin! that flowers are meant only for lord

Thayumanavan. The kin! turned a deaf ear to his appeal and encoura!ed %ranthakan to pluck flowers from the

    !arden.

The sa!e at once pleaded with the lord to put an end to this act. The lord" unhappy over the kin!’s behaviour"

decided to punish him. A severe sandstorm hit the place and thousands were rendered homeless. &ot knowin!

what to do" the people surrendered to Vekkali Amman and invoked her blessin!s.

The !oddess made the kin! realise his fault. Thou!h the sandstorm stopped" yet" people did not have a house to

live in. 't is believed that the !oddess also decided to reside in a roofless temple with only the sky for a cover.

#he pitied them for livin! on the streets and resolved to stay likewise till such time that they !ot a house. This

incident has been narrated by Tamil scholar Ottakoothar.

There are other deities in the temple like $uru!an with Valli and (evasena" #aturn and the &ava!rahas. The

icon of the )oddess radiates divinity and she is consecrated in a sittin! posture. The temple calendar is packed

    with festivals.

remarkable man. %eople have written books about him" many films have been made

about him includin! the well4known film directed by 5ichard Attenborou!h.

' will not attempt to retell the story but wish to eplain why he is one of my heroes and to

see what we can learn from him.

    He was brave

)andhi was the bravest man '’ve ever heard of. He did not shrink back from bein!

beaten or bein! imprisoned for what he believed. 6hen he was in court and char!ed

with sedition he told the 3ritish 7ud!e that he was !uilty as char!ed and that the 7ud!e

had no alternative but to send him to prison.

6hen ' compare myself with his bravery ' realise that ' fall far short. 6ould ' be

prepared to !o to prison in defence of the ri!hts of other people8

6hen there was fi!htin! and much loss of life between Hindus and $uslims he knewthat he had to do somethin! dramatic to stop the violence. He said that he would not eat

a!ain until the fi!htin! had completely stopped. The news spread that he was dyin! and

in mos9ues and Hindu temples the word went out that the killin! had to stop. Only when

he was convinced that there was no further fi!htin! did he a!ree to eat a!ain.

Am ' prepared to !ive my life for the community in which ' live so that there will be

harmony between people of different races" reli!ions and cultures8

A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of

others, including his enemies, and became the ransom of the world. It was a perfect

act. (Gandhi referring to Jesus Christ)

He was a man of vision

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. (Attributed to Gandhi)

)andhi was a man of !reat vision. He saw a world where the 'ndian people would be

free to control their own destiny. Havin! perceived a chan!e he wished to see he set

about tryin! to achieve it. He understood the system. He knew the 3ritish could only rule

by oppression and control. He realised to oppose oppression with violence was bound

to fail. 6ith the weapon of non4violent civil disobedience he took on the mi!ht of the3ritish :mpire and won.

     A final note

obody can hurt me without my permission. (Gandhi)

'f we do not !ive permission to people they cannot hurt us. 3ut we cannot hold

everyone at arm’s len!th. 'f we have an open nature" we !ive that permission to our

family" our close friends and perhaps our collea!ues. To close our hearts to the whole

world would dama!e us" more than the potential hurt which can come throu!h havin!

an open heart. The question is this: when we are hurt by someone close to us

how do we react! Are we prepared to talk through what has hurt us and "orgi#e

where necessary or do we close our heart to them to a#oid being hurt again!

different amplitude. Concentrate your efforts on stopping this trembling. (Little hint – it will be

easier to do if you look at further objects). Slowly close your eyes, like your eyelids are made out

of puffy cottony clouds. Think that your eyes get extremely comfortable in their position. The

blood filled with the oxygen flows through your eye sockets. When you inhale imagine the breezy

oxygenated air coming through your nose into the eyes. Exhale through the mouth. Breathe this

way for one or two minutes and end this exercise with a smile.
