In 2019, YWCA Metro St. Louis is celebrating our 115th year of serving women and children in St. Louis! A lot has changed since our formation in 1904 of course, but the basic needs of the women we serve remain the same: Safety, Security and Stability. That is why we offer multiple services - to ensure that we cover all those bases. We learned a long time ago that a woman coming to us for help probably needs help in more than one area.

Yes, we sometimes get asked the question, “Why do you offer so many services?” The answer is simple: “Because our clients need them.”

YWCA Third Annual Gala cont. from front cover

Once again supporters of YWCA Metro St. Louis enjoyed an inspiring program and lovely rooftop weather for after-dinner conversation at the 3rd Annual YWCA Gala at Bissinger’s Caramel Room. KSDK’s Rene Knott emceed the Gala, which was Co-Chaired by Jim and Merry Mosbacher.

Attendees listened as Saint Louis University Hospital Forensic Nursing Coordinator Kathy Howard discussed how the partnership with YWCA’s domestic violence and sexual assault response team benefits victims of domestic and sexual violence in 17 area emergency rooms. Kathy has worked with victims of violence for some 30 years and her insight and experience are invaluable. Her remarks were followed by a video of the journey from abuse victim to thriving survivor for former YWCA client Christy. Her story showed the impact of YWCA services for those who need help. And thanks to supporters like those attending the Gala, YWCA continues to offer Safety, Stability and Security to St. Louis women and children. http://bit.ly/YWCA-Christy

YWCA Academy of Leaders, Class of 2019!

Each year since 1979, YWCA Metro St. Louis has honored women for their achievements in the workplace and the community at YWCA Leader Lunch. These Leaders are chosen by their peers, women who themselves hold the distinction of being members of the YWCA Academy of Leaders. This year is no different!

We are excited to announce the nine women and our Future Leader, who will be honored in December. We also are bestowing the rarely-given YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award this year as well. Here are the 2019 YWCA Leaders of Distinction and the YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Mrs. Carol Duhme.

YWCA Volunteers RecognizedOur Domestic Violence-Sexual Assault Response Team is comprised of volunteers who receive 48 hours of training and then share 24/7 call to respond to emergency rooms with support and resources for victims of sexual and/or domestic violence. These dedicated volunteers say the experience of helping others enriches their lives too. Thank you from the YWCA Crisis Intervention staff who work along side the team, our partners in law enforcement and from the 17 area hospitals to which you respond!

YWCA in the Community 2019 Vol. 2

Eye on Women 05

YWCA hosted an enlightening presentation in March by Jill Farmer, pictured here on the left with YWCA Board Member Dr. Simone Cummings. Jill is a life coach and time management expert. She explained how to prioritize what is important vs. what seems urgent and other skills to employ so we are truly productive and not just busy. Her book, “There’s Not Enough Time . . . and other lies we tell ourselves.” is on Amazon and her website is jillfarmer.com if you’d like to sample some of her life lessons!

YWCA CEO Adrian Bracy, Edward Jones Manag-ing Partner Penny Pennington, Centene’s former Chief Administrative & Markets Officer Cindy Brinkley and Colonel Leslie Maher, former Com-mander, 375th Air Mobility Wing, Scott Air Force Base, 375th AMW, participated in a Women’s History Month panel discussion on leadership held by Focus St. Louis at Edward Jones. Theyalso recommended their favorite books on lead-ership: “Extreme Ownership”, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, and “The Extraordinary Leader.”

To receive Eye on Women electronically, go to: www.ywcastl.org Click on the Connect button and follow directions. Thank You!

YWCA CEO Adrian Bracy and YWCA Crisis Intervention Director Samantha Wayant joined STL Live host Sarah Thompson to discuss how YWCA services remove barriers and build lives by tackling violence against women, creating safe places to live, expanding educa-tional opportunities or advocating for racial justice.

They also explained how the upcoming YWCA Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is YWCA mission-aligned as it brings awareness to sexual, domestic and gender violence while encouraging men to become involved in preven-tion efforts.

Another school year is beginning for the children of YWCA Head Start/Early Head Start, but the program’s Assistant Director is celebrating the end of his own admirable educational journey. This summerLuis Ortiz received his Ph.D. in Philosophy, majoring in Social Work. Dr. Ortiz holds a Master’s Degree in Planning and Statistics, also from the University of Puerto Rico.

Dr. Ortiz joined YWCA Metro St. Louis last year after serving more than a decade in the government of Puerto Rico as the Planning Director for the Admin-istration for Children (Administracion de Familias y Ninos) while holding a dual role as the Auxiliary Administrator on Planning, Evaluation and Develop-ment. Congratulations, Dr. Ortiz!

YWCA Head Start Is Hiring! This is an exciting time of year for schools every-where, and YWCA Head Start/Early Head Start is no exception. Just as families are looking forward to their children beginning a new phase of their lives in our classrooms, we are busy looking for qualified applicants to add to our wonderful staff!

YWCA Head Start has openings for teacher’s aides, teachers, and more. For a full list of openings at YWCA Head Start and Early Head Start, go to our website at www.ywcastl.org or call the Head Start Central Office at 314 427-4940.

Destiny, a Head Start volunteer who also happens to be hard of hearing, is teaching American Sign Language at the Pagedale Center.

The children learned to sign the alphabet and to count using ASL. Thank you, Destiny!

Committee On Administration Holds Annual Fashion ShowThe Alberta E. Gantt YWCA Valentine Fashion Show is the longest running fundraising event in YWCA history, spanning nearly five decades. It is produced by the Committee on Administration (COA), which is a volunteer group of women employing the name that was used by the governing bodies of the African American branches of YWCA during segregation, including here in St. Louis. Thank you, COA, for your amazing support!
