This infographic explains all types of eye protection and indication for use. All eye protection is indicated when staff enter a patient hospital, clinic, or exam room. Coverall Safety Glasses Provides eye coverage against splash events, bloodborne pathogen exposure, and chemical exposure. Glasses to wear over prescription eyeglasses. Indicated for Care of COVID patients. Gumball Safety Glasses Provides eye protection but does not fully protect against bloodborne pathogens or chemical exposures. May be used on non-COVID units. Indicated for care of COVID patients. Disposable OR Goggles Donned in the OR prior to case and discarded after case is complete. For use in procedural areas ONLY. Cleaning and Disinfection Eyewear Storage Once outside of the patient room, you may use a germicidal wipe to clean eyewear for the designated wet time. If a film of disinfectant obscures vision after it has dried, you may use a screen-cleaning wipe to clear the field of vision. Cleaning should occur at a minimum: Upon doffing eyewear. At the end of shift to store clean. If soiled (i.e. after a splash event occurs, or when eye protection has been touched with dirty hands or gloves. Store cleaned eyewear in a dedicated clean location on the unit (i.e. staff locker, where clean N95s are kept, etc.). Eyewear can be worn on your head or from your shirt pocket only if it has been appropriately cleaned and disinfected. Extended Use Eyewear Once your eyewear is donned, you may wear it between patients and during continuous care (i.e. passing meds, rounds, etc.). Universal Eyewear Education Eyewear Cleaning Products Approved Utilize any germicidal wipe (bleach, AF3, sanicloth) for low level disinfection. Due to pandemic and shortages, there are a variety of germicidal wipes in the institution. Follow manufactures wet time for product. Not Approved Due to lack of disinfectant properties, screen cleaners are not approved. These can be used after the eye protection has been appropriately disinfected to clear the field of vision.
