1. This note should be read in conjunction with the Local Insight note, which contains other information on Eynsham area.

2. Area Definition. The data in this note defines Eynsham as the junction of the two MSOAs which cover the area. It therefore includes (among other places) Long Hanborough, Freeland, Cassington, and Stanton Harcourt.

a. This is marked red on Figure 1. b. (Some of the data is also available at LSOA level, but has not been

presented here so that all the data in this note is mutually consistent.) c. This therefore differs from the ‘Local Insight’ report on Eynsham, which

uses the parish boundary: marked blue on Figure 1.

3. Figure 2 shows the distance travelled to work by those who a. Figure 2 does not include those who work at home. b. On average, Eynsham residents travel 15.6km to work. c. On average, Eynsham workers travel 18.3km from home.

C. Eynsham workers: where do they come from? Return to top of document 4. Figure 3a-c shows where Eynsham workers come from.

a. Areas marked on the maps are MSOAs within Oxfordshire, and districts outside Oxfordshire.

b. Local commuters are included in these maps.

5. Patterns from the 2011 Census are as follows. a. (Figure a) Eynsham workers appear to come predominantly from the

MSOAs immediately to the north and west of Eynsham. Fewer come from Oxford city.

b. (Figure b-c) Workers also come to Eynsham from Cotswold (60 persons) and Swindon (51) districts. In addition, he districts east and south of Oxfordshire each have 20-50 people commuting in to Eynsham.

c. (Figure c) There are 16 individuals coming into Eynsham from London (this is not visible on the map since they are from scattered areas across the metropolis).

a. Areas marked on the maps are MSOAs within Oxfordshire, and districts outside Oxfordshire.

b. Local commuters are included in these maps.

7. Patterns from the 2011 Census are as follows. a. (Figure 4a) Eynsham residents commute primarily to Woodstock, Witney,

Kidlington and Oxford city. b. (Figure 4b-c) Eynsham residents also go to Cotswold district (22 persons).

Other districts around Oxfordshire are less well represented with no more than 20 Eynsham residents going to each one.

c. (Figure 4c) There are 109 individuals commuting into London. Of these 50 are going to Westminster London Borough.

E. Employee Characteristics Return to top of document This section is based on Census 2011 figures. 8. Occupational groups. Figure 5 shows the occupational groups of Eynsham

workers and residents. a. For the purposes of the graph, the ONS groups have been collapsed as

follows:

Group A: 1. Managers, directors and senior officials 2. Professional occupations

3. Associate professional and technical occupations

Group B: 4. Administrative and secretarial occupations 5. Skilled trades occupations

6. Caring, leisure and other service occupations

7. Sales and customer service occupations Group C: 8. Process, plant and machine operatives 9. Elementary occupations

b. The graph demonstrates that Eynsham residents are slightly more likely to

be Group A (managers/ professionals) than the incoming workforce. c. Conversely, those commuting into Eynsham are more likely than the

residents to belong to admin, skilled trades or low-skilled jobs.

9. Economic activity. Figure 6 shows the economic activity of Eynsham

residents. a. 74% of Eynsham residents are economically active (the rest are retired,

looking after home, or long-term sick & disabled). b. Of those who are economically active, 94% are either employed or self-

employed. c. 160 individuals recorded themselves on Census 2011 as looking for work.

10. 11. Qualifications. Figure 7 shows the qualifications of 9284 Eynsham residents,

compared to England as a whole. a. Eynsham has comparatively fewer individuals with Level 2 qualifications or

lower (45%) compared to England (51%). b. Eynsham has comparatively more individuals with Level 4 or higher (36%)

compared to England as a whole (27%). with looking after home, or long-term sick & disabled).

F. Industry Groups Return to top of document a. Workers vs residents. Figure 8 uses the Census to compare industry of

Eynsham workers versus residents, for a few select industries. c. The graph shows that Eynsham workers are twice as likely as Eynsham

residents to be in manufacturing. Similarly, workers commute into Eynsham for the Trade and Professional & Scientific categories.

d. Conversely, Eynsham residents are more likely to commute out of the area to work in education and health.

12. Industry: Employees in 2016. Figure 9 shows the industry of 6000 Eynsham

employees (ie. the workers who commute into Eynsham) in 2016. This data is thus more up-to-date than the Census figures in the Figure 7.

a. A third of Eynsham employees (34%) work in Manufacturing or Professional & Scientific.
