Dementia Monitoring

This is when dementia monitoring becomes useful..

Traditional nurse call (call bell) systems use manual call devices to summon staff when assistance is required.

People who suffer from dementia & Alzheimer's do not have the cognitive ability to know when to call for help.

People who suffer from dementia will often activate ‘manual’ nurse call devices as a repetitive action – this causes numerous false calls to care staff who quickly learn to ‘ignore’ these calls or residents.

Traditional nurse call (call bell) systems are rendered inefficient & useless when residents with dementia truly need assistance.

Dementia Monitoring

Dementia Monitoring systems use passive methods to supervise the resident/patient without using any actual call devices. The system monitors and tracks resident behaviors and alerts care staff when behavior patterns differ from normal behavior.

Most dementia monitoring systems are expensive to deploy and operate. The EZcall DCS (Dementia Control System) lets you overlay a fully networked dementia monitoring system in only a few rooms, and utilizing your existing nurse call systems’ hardware. EZcall lets you mix traditional nurse call with dementia monitoring all in a single system to reduce on costs.

Dementia Monitoring Generates any/all of the following events:

Here is how they function.. Copyright 2011, QBsoft Solutions, All Rights Reserved

Bed Exit Alerts..

Bed exit sensors generate alarms when a patient leaves his/her bed.

When monitored by a DCS, the bed exit sensor only alerts staff during preset times-of-day (allowing residents to ‘nap’ during the day without alarming staff unnecessarily).

DCS also monitors other room sensors, so that staff are not alerted if a resident simply exit’s their bed under normal situations.

Bed Exit Alerts..

A bed exit sensor monitors whenever a resident is in their bed.

When the resident leaves, no bed exit alarm is generated when it is detected as normal behavior (such as going to the washroom).

But when a bed exit is detected, but no other activity sensed, the system assumes the resident has fallen from their bed & requires assistance.

Another sign of normal behavior is when the person leaves their bed and exit’s the room or moves throughout their room. This will not generate an unwanted nuisance alarm to care staff.

Agitation Alerts..

People who suffer from dementia and related illnesses may become easily agitated, which often leads to violent behavior.

Tendencies that lead to an agitated resident are easy to notice, such as; pacing or restlessness.

DCS uses in-room motion sensors to detect and sense when a patient is about to become agitated, so that care staff may intervene early to prevent a violent resident.

Agitation Alerts..

In-room motion sensors allow the DCS system to monitor normal resident movement patterns and determine excessive motion that may lead to agitation.

A resident who paces continuously in their room will cause an agitation alert to care staff.

Care staff may now intervene early; before this resident becomes violent.

Inactivity Alerts..

People who suffer from dementia and related illnesses are at high risk of falling and injuring themselves.

DCS monitors movement throughout a residents’ room to alert care staff whenever a resident may have fallen. Inactivity alerts are only generated when room motion stops and no other room sensor detects activity.

Washroom Occupancy Alerts..

People with dementia often enter a washroom and forget why or even fall asleep in the washroom.

A DCS monitors when a resident is in an out of the washroom. The system tracks normal behavior and washroom activity and alerts staff when a resident is in a washroom for an excessive period that is longer than the residents’ normal patterns.

Washroom Occupancy Alerts..

A resident may use the washroom facilities under normal situations and the DCS will not generate a washroom occupancy alert to staff.

If the resident is in the washroom for an excessive time, staff will be automatically notified to intervene.

Room Exit Alerts..

A good dementia monitoring system should help with patient wander prevention to avoid falls and lost patients.

The EZcall DCS will alert care staff as soon as a resident leaves their room during normal sleeping hours. This feature is only active during sleeping times to prevent false exit alerts when residents are allowed to roam freely.

Room Exit Alerts..

During daytime hours, residents may enter and exit their room freely, providing them with independence. Staff are not alerted during these times.

When a resident should be sleeping, staff will be alerted as soon as the resident leaves their room. This allows staff to prevent wandering / lost patients.

Incontinence Alerts..

Incontinence (aka bed wet) sensors may complement a dementia monitoring system to alert staff or housekeeping as soon as bed linens require changing.

Preventing the time spent in bed with soiled linens is important to the health and well-being of elderly patients.

Room Bypassed/Overtime Alerts..

A proper DCS must have a simple method for staff to respond and cancel dementia alerts. A staff presence switch is used (normally outside the rooms) to allow responding caregivers to activate that staff is in attendance and cancel any dementia alert or alarm.

EZcall includes built-in timers to alert staff if a room has been left in bypass mode after the caregiver has left the room.
