Warm-up(5minutes)• Askstudentsabouttheirfamily– whoisintheirfamily?• Introduceanewword“Data”– explainthatDataisafancywordfor“information”or“facts”• Tellstudentsthattoday,wearegoingtocollectdataabouttheirfamilies!

GuidedIndependentActivity(50minutes)• ProvideeachstudentwithaDataCollectionWorksheet• WalkstudentsthroughcompletingeachpartofthecollectionworksheetusingRoman

Numeral/Tally(note:youngerstudentsmaynothavecomeacrossthisconceptyet,soyoucanexplainhoweachIrepresents“one”onthewhiteboard)

• Studentscompleteatallyfor“HowManyAdultsLiveinMyHouse,”“HowManySiblingsIHave”and“HowManyPetsWeHave”

• Studentsusecoloured papertocutandglueahouse(withyoungerstudents,youmayliketohavetheshapespre-cuttomakethisstepquickerandneater!)

• Inthemiddleofthehouse,studentsusecoloured squaresofpapertorepresentthedifferentmembersoftheirhousehold

• Studentsnowhavetheirdatarepresentedinthreeways– 1.Inatally;2.Number3.Visuallyusingcoloured squares.Gluebothside-by-sideonanA3pieceofpaperanddisplay.
