SPANISH IN COLOMBIAThe Centro Latinoamericano is an academic unit under the auspices of the Languages Department in the School of Communication and Language at Javeriana University. Its history dates back to more than forty years, thus making it one of the oldest institutions in Colombia and South America devoted to teaching Spanish as a foreign language to adult foreigners from all over the world.

LOCATIONThe Centro Latinoamericano is located at the University’s main Campus where student facilities are available. We also offer private classes at home for those foreigners who can not commute to the University.

TEACHING The main purpose of our Spanish language courses is to help students develop the ability to communicate correctly and effectively in Spanish. Classroom activities, individual and pair work, and teaching materials all contribute to the development of the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Due to the nature of Spanish language learning, we use communicative activities as well as more traditional exercises to facilitate the student’s use of grammatical structures. Since our students are of various nationalities, we use Spanish as the only means of instruction.

STUDENT PLACEMENTIn order to place students in the level that best suits their interests and particular language needs, we give them an individual interview and a written examination in which mastery of grammatical structures, vocabulary range, reading, listening, and writing abilities, fluency and pronunciation are evaluated.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIESTo teach foreign students the correct and practical use of the Spanish language not only is one of our main concerns, but also to expose them to some aspects of the Colombian culture. Teachers accompany students while they discover Colombia’s natural and cultural treasures on field trips to touristic sites and surrounding villages and towns.

TEACHING MATERIALSFaculty members have designed a set of exclusive textbooks and materials to satisfy the particular language needs of foreigners living in Colombia. Topics studied are interesting; vocabulary is useful; grammar explanations are simple; exercises are meaningful and help to develop the ability to communicate orally and in writing.

IMMERSION COURSESWe also offer Immersion Courses lasting days or weeks all year through, to meet the particular needs of those requiring our services.
