.----rH E SUPREME COMMAN Those who.perform Sadhana twice a day regularly, the thought of Paramapu

rusa will certainly arise in theit minds at the time of death, their liberation is a sure guarantee therefore, every Ananda Margii will have to perform Sadhana twice a day invariably - verily is this the command of the Lord. Without Yama and Niyama, Sadhana is an impossibility; hence the Lord's command is also to follow Yama and Niyama. Disobedience to this command is nothing but to throw oneself into the tortures of animal life for crores of years. That no one should undergo torments such as these, that everyone might be enabled to enjoy the eternal blessedness under the loving shelter of the Lord, it is the bounden-duty of every Ananda Margii to endeavor to bring all to the path of bliss. Verily is this a part and parcel of Sadhana, to lead others along the path of righteousne$s.

·EOITORIAL Though we as Ma1rgiis are universalists, considering people of all nations as our brothers and sisters, this does not mean that we should cut ourselves off from our various cultural backgrounds. The positive cultural expressions of any culture or group constitute itl ra'n'a dharma, and this Ba bal has said should not be suppressed.

In the long run it will be better to encourage those expressions which all cultures share in common {such as archaeological and anthropological researches evidencing our common origins}. But in the short run encouragement of the unique expressions of a culture, such as its indigenous art and music, can help that culture form itself into a self-sufficient socio-economic unit. The formation of such units will help free our world from exploitation.

Dear brothers/sisters,

, )

You are already aware of our great victory in connection with the court cases during the current yeqr .We had a grand victory this year from Patna High Court in three fabricated murder cases lodged against our Revo Preceptor and other workers of the mission by the CBl-during the black days of the seventies. Thus far, all the cases based on the dictated story of Madhavananda have been disposed of. After a prolonged legal battle, Patna High Court has finally quashed all three cases, upholding the noble image of Revo Marga Guru and the missiono Of course, we had to spend a huge aJTIount of money to defend them properly through the eminent lawyers of the country. But the ultimate credit goes to the ever gracious Lord and you brothers and sisters who have always generously contributed for the. causes.

But, unfortunately, two more serious cases, namely, the L.NoMishra case and the A.N.Roy case, involving some of our beloved brothers, are still pending in court. L.NMishra case has recently been committed to session in a Delhi court, and its trial proceeding will start on the 14th of July. Our appeal-petition in Delhi High Court regarding the Roy case is also scheduled to be heard in Augu$t. We have engaged a set of eminent lawyers to defend both cases properly. But the trial proceedings of the L.N. Mishra case will be going on for months together 0 It will undoubtedly involve a huge expenditure, about more than a lac of rupees, which cannot be borne unless and until every one of respond promptly and generously.

Dear brothers and sisters, we should not forget that four of our beloved brothers are still confined in jail. Even slight negligence on our part to defend them in the cases may result in tragic victimization of those completely innocent brothers in the hands of the evil forces. So, please send immediately generous contributions for this purpose and pave the way for clean acquittal of our brothers.

May the Lord bless us to march ahead unitedlyv

Yours fraternally,

A'c. Sarveshvara'nanda Avt. General Secretary

BABA AND HIS MISSION

by Alc. Da'naviira Brc.

Throughout the ages many "great personalities" have come to this planet, declaring that humanity had suffered long enough and that they had come to restore Dharma to societyo' Now, hundreds, even thousands,o f years after their deaths, the world is, if anything, a little worse than when they were around 0 Those long-gone religiolls personalities are now remembered, maybe, for their kindheartedness , but mostly for their "miracles" or their "mystical revelations of God's Will""

In our Hission of Dharma these things are not at all requiredo Rather, I am tempted to regard the "voices from the sky" that certain "believers " c.laim to hear these days as sentimental gimmickry designed to cloud the mLnds of good peopleo In these days of developed technology, when modern methods of transportation and communication have brought the entire planet within the scope of our v ision, it would be quite reasonable to expect the true spiritual leader to fulfill His Mission while still alive 0 Now, our Ba'ba' is not known for His occult powers or mystical experiences. These things are not important 0 Ea 'ba' is known for liis enormous administrative capabilities and His uncompromisingly practical approach to solving the problems of human suffering caused by spiritual and moral degenerationo Ba'ba' exists on this planet, at this point in time, for only one purpose q 0 " 0 > to build a universal human societyo And that is what He is going to doo

Devotees know that Ba'bilt' is completely controlling not only Ananda Marga's Mis sion, but everything that is created , maintained, or destroyed in this entire universeo But you may not know that this is happening, not only through the omnipotency of His Cosmic Mind, but on a very human level 0 Through His capacity as president of Ananda Marga Ba'ba' is personally setting all the priorities of our work, posting all TIlorkers, giving all systems of reporting and organiza.tional procedures, as well as specific techniques for -the implementation of our prograL'lS 0 Through a very tight reporting system, the details of the progress of Ananda Marga all over the planet are given to Him by the Central Office workers every dayo In this way Ba'ba' is personally making sure that our organiz ation is alwasy on the right track, moving smoothly and swiftly toward the GoaL Presently Ba'ba' is effecting a significant shift of roles in the organizationo The main responsibility for maintaining and strengtheni;"lg the existing structure is being given to the Bhukti Pradhanas and different level Pramukhas of all the trades. For the first time time Ba'ba' is giv· ing direct personal attention to the work and reporting discipline of the margiis, The main duty of all the woletimers is to expand the Mission

4

DFTS-04430

, . to cover all corners of the planeto Today, wholetimers all over the world are travelling to all the previously hidden and neglected parts of human civilization to spread the words of Dharma and start Ananda Marga educational and social service programso Viewing the Mission from a truly global perspective, it is easy to see that Ananda Marga is now spreading more rapidly than evero Behind the Iron Curtain, in Red China, in the rain forests of Northern Brazil and Guyana, at the altar of Islam in the Middle East, in the heart of Africa, on long-forgotten islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific, busy orange-robed missionarie's are carrying the flag of Dharma through new terrain every day, under Ba'ba's perfect guidance 0 So, with system and speed, His Mission of Supreme Idealism is moving ahead in a well-planned and scientific manner, uniquely abiding to all universal laws of practicalityo

It gives me deep peace and confidence to be part of the Mission of Anada Maiga, knowing that we are completely in His handso When we spread the happy message of Dharma to all we are like His instrttment, and He is playing His Cosmic song through uSo When we fight against injustice, we are like His Sudarshana Cakra, and He is giving us all force and speed as He propels us straight toward our targeto When we do social service we are like His hands; and He is the One relieving the pains of those who are suffering,

The Mission of Ananda Marga will be established because Ba 'ba' Himself is so intimately present in all aspects of what we are doing. As we purify our minds and bodies and put ourselves completely at His disposal,we are becoming the perfect instruments for Him to work througho It has been said that "the ord does Hot ask about your ability, just your availability" 0 Make yourself available for Baba f, through your devotion and obedience to Him, His Ideology and His Mission, which He has given so generously. In this way Ba'ba' is establishing Dhcu-wlfJ. in all countries orr this planet through a rational, systematic t6d uncompromising process, planned and executed by Him personally. It is not a 'mir ac1e' , it is simply 0 0 0 o Dharma 0

Do you know that, in addition to the three giant countries of the United States, Canada and Mexico, there are twenty-five more countries in the New York Sector? If Some of us have forgotten, Ba'ba' has not forgotten at allo During the last two months the number one priority in the sector has been to develop the programs of education, relief and dharma pracar in these new countrieso The target is to have all these programs operating in every country 0 The same program has been undertaken with speed throughout the whole world, and Ba'ba is personally, carefully, monitoring the progress on a daily basiso The Caribbean and the West Indies have eighteen countries, and Central America has seven countries. Out of a total of twenty-eight countries in the whole sector, fifteen are English-speaking, nine Spanish-speaking, three French-speaking and one Dutch-speakingo In most of the English-speaking countries there is a significant Spanish-or French-speaking minorityo

Country Survey JAMAICA

Ananda Marga has been established on this island since 19740 Kingston is now one of the strongest units, if not the strongest unit, in the New York Sectoro Kingston District has been divided into four blocks, each of which has its own AoMoPoSo unit with a functioning unit committee. All offices of Bhukti Pradhana and Upabhukti Pramukhas have been very seriously implemented in Kingston District. Their organizational discipline and togetherness is an example for Ananda Marga everywhereo The unit is supporting two a'ca'ryas, A'co Shiveshvaranandajii Avto and BrciL Subhadra A'eo There are two rented jagrtis: one general, and one for sisters only. Unit projects includ a school with thirteen children, a children's home with two children, an Ananda Marga Universal Store, and an Ananda Marga People's Schoolo Renaissance Universal/Renaissance Artists and Writers Association and Progressive Men's Spiritual Association activities are also well-organizedo Mangoes from the jagrti garden are being sold to raise fundso Yoga classes are being given in different corners of Kingston and the Kingston margiis are also maintaining several yoga and meditation classes in towns and villages around the island. Earlier this year, the first a'ca'rya from Jamaica finished his training 0 His name is Alco Priyarainjan (previously Paravidya) and he is posted to Kenya in Nairobi Sectoro He is also the first black a'ca1rya of our organizationo Of course, the biggest moment in the history of Ananda Marga in Jamaica so far was the visit of Ba'ba' for four days last September 0 The Jamaica margiis sacrificed a lot and did a tremendous job organizing all aspects of the Dharma Maha Cakrao All visiting margiis, and Ba'ba' also, were very pleased indeedo Ananda Marga in Jamaica is expanding quickly, and we expect that soon the whole island will be covered by BABA NAM KEV ALAM!

The Intuitional Art of MUSIC and DANCE

Shrii ShrH Anandamurti

Once a certain boy asked me to. say something on music and danceo I said that the subject was very interesingo I will write an essay on the subject in the futureo That would be bettero Now I will say something in brief,

Everyone knows that Sada Shiva was the original propounder of the science of music, in this wor1do The same Sada Shiva was the propounder of ayurveda (medicine)o At the same time, he invented dances, song and the science of playing instruments and many other thingso Now the question is, why was Sada Shiva so interested in the arts of dance, song and playing instruments? Besides that he also invented 'Svara Shastra'o That is , he found the link between inhalation and exhalation, on the one Side, and dance, song·.-and playing instruments on the othero This is called 'Svara Shastra'o Now, the collective name of dance, song and playing instruments is 'samgiita', that is, musico The word 'giita' is derived from the root verb plus the suffix o I have already said on many occasions that ours is a subjective approach with objective ad-

. justmento Now, objective adjustment means to arrange everything in such an order as to be acceptab1eo For instance, while cooking something, an expert cook always take care that things are neither salty, pungent, nor souro Everything is there but in proper proportion, When Sada Shiva introduced the science of intuitional practice, he had to keep in mind that there had to be some adjustment in the o.bjective life of those who followed Dharma Sadhanao . In the absence of adjustment, the mind becomes irked and degenerateQ No concentration in sadhana is possible for such a mindo Shiva selected three things which are very much in use in the objective wor1d but which are at the same time immensely helpful in spiritual life as wello The selection was 'samgiita' whose first part is 'giita', that is song. Songs are grounded in the physical world but their impact is on the subtler layers of the human mindo The mental world is the ectoplasmic world - the world composed or ectoplasmic stuff 0 Those songs produce a vibration wave which makes our mental waves straight, and these straightened mental waves in turn ultimately touch the point of the soulo Now to touch the embodied soul, the songs must have rhythm, melody and fee1ingo If there is no feeling, the song will lack sweetnesso Therefore, songs must have deep ideaso Simultaneously, Lord Shiva invented two more things: Vadya (playing of instruments) and Nrtya (dance) 0

- -- - --What is Vadya? The Indo-Aryan music is divided into two broad

schools 0 One is Hindustani music, and the other Deccan or Carnatic musico The basic characteristics of these two schools of music are that, based on specific ragas or raginis, they give expressions to different feelingso Then again, there are other sub-schools of musico Each perso has tried

12 .

DFTS-04437

. i

a particular style eculiar to him or her. These styles are known as 'Gharana'. In Bengal there is Visnupari Gharana. In Kiirtan there are different musical.styles (Gharanas) such as Manoharshahi, Ranihati, Garanhata, Mandaran, etc.

The speC1alty OL these styles is that they channelize a specific mental feeling t owards the Supreme Desideratum, through the structures of ragas and raginis. Songs have suggestive meanings and rhythm and tune also. But its soul is the meaning or idea. Playing of musical instruments is not like that. Then what is its role? It just vibrates the mind and hence directly vibrates the ectoplasm and maintains parallelism with the idea. Once it loses the basic property to maintain parallelism, then i t becomes useless.

Now, about dance. Dance expresses inner psychic feelings through rhythm and mudra (specialized gesture), without the help of language or wordso In Occidental dance, the expression is conveyed mainly through rhythm, but Oriental music takes the help of both rhythm and mudrao These mudras, because of their close association with rhythmic qualities, have become more expressive and beautiful than in Occidental musico

How do these mudras originate? The source of all sound is Parashakti, which is such a big entity, not to be explained in wordso Next comes Pashyanti Shakti; that is, we mentally visualize things which we want to expresso Next comes Madhayama Shakti, where we try to translate the mental ideas into actiono We need to take the help of the vocal cordso Then comes

Dyotomana Shakti, that is, things that you actually feel, things that you actually want to expresso The last stage is Shruhgochara Shaktio The characteristics of dance are to use mudras to give expression to this last item, without the help of wordso The mudras of dance are directly related to ectoplasmo That's why the specialities of Oriental dance are easily appreciated by all. Now, for objective adjustment in the physical world,Shiva provided for song, dance and the playing of instruments in such a manner that it would directly vibrate ectoplasm, so that ectoplasmic movement touches the soul-point at a particular point in the body. That's why the great men of all ages have encouraged all the three aspects of musico

In the history of the saint, ':Jj1abarS'i Narada. it is known he played violin, danced and sang songs all at the same time. In more recent times, Mahaprabhu Caetanya Deva also encouraged these three things. He said that the lyrics of songs should directly reflect Parama Purusa Himself. And this category of song, directly reflecting Parama Purusa, is known as kiirtanao The other category of song that also refl®cts Parama Purusa, but which picks up many tangential ideas before returning to the one central idea of Parama Purusa, is called hajanao This is the

'basic difference between

bhajana and kiirtana. In this respect I fully agree with the previous propounders, and so I also encourage these three things.

Now, laliita marmikadance can maintain adjustment with kiirtana, without causing fatigue in the human bodyo That 's why lalita is prescribed in kiirtanao Marmikameans that which touches the innermost recesses of the hearto So it is called laliita marmika. The inventor of this laliita dance was _Prvati; Shiv":L himself di not invent ito He did invent Tandava, how-

ever. The inner motivation is the following: Destruction is inevitable-, but I will continue to fight against destruction through struggleo So

-there is a skull in one hand and a dagger in the othero The skull represents destruction and the dagger represents fight, The underlying motiv

'tion is 'I will not surrender to destruction or deatho I will continue th_ s_tr\lggl,: with \ the daer' 0 Furthermore, it is _ <?..und hat htJl!lan bengs are sometimes affected by various complaints with respect to their sad-11ao These impediments may or may not be major. For instance, small diseases like liver trouble may cause problems from time to timeo To fight against these types of hindrances I have invented kaoshikii dance on September 6th, 19780 This dance serves as an antidote to twenty-two kinds of diseases. All are primarily meant to insure objective adjust-

I mento Therefore, they vibrate the ectoplasmic stuff, which in turn is collected at a certain point touching the point of the soul, where Parama Purusa resideso

This is, broadly speaking, a reply to the question of that boy. If I am to reply in greater detail, I will write a bigger essay on the subject, which I propose to do in the futureo

(From a discourse given in Calcutta, November 1978)

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Two American a'caryas, Did Ananda Mitra (Victoria Sheppard) and Dada Ari Sudan (Michael Dwyer), were arrested in February 1978, accused of assaulting an Indian diplomat outside the Indian Embassy in Manila, the Philippines. From the very beginning there were a number of irregularities and contradictions in the arguments of the prosecutors, and in the proceedings which led to their conviction. The appeal is going to be heard this month in Manila and a new decision is expected before the end of the year.

What can you do to help in this situation? Dada and Didi have personally requested that all the margiis write to their respective congresspeople concerning this mattero During a brief visit last month Did! made very useful contacts with a number of senators and representatives, and influential officials in the State Department. Please write your letter according to this form letter:

"We have reason to believe that Michael Dwyer and Victoria Sheppard were not granted a fair trial in the Philippines, Please ensure that appropriate representation is made to thegvernment of the Philippines, so that Michael Dwyer and Victoria Sheppard will be granted a fair trial. Rere, for your convenience, is the name and address of the officer in charge of Southeast Asia in the Ruman Rights Section of the State Department:

Taylor Jesse Clear Ruman Rights Officer, Department of State HAIRR Room 7802 Washington DC 20520"

Should you wish to telephone the number is: (202) 632-2264. Please send a copy of your letter to the sectorial office. We are

sure that you will all understand the seriousness of the situation and act promptly to help our dear [rother and sister in the Philippines.
