BOWELSCAN – CAN YOU AFFORD NOT TO?

Members attending our forty eighth meeting of the 2011-2012 Rotary Year were treated to a presentation from Graeme Hawkins, who spoke to us about bowel cancer and why we can’t afford not to do a Bowelscan every year.

Introduced by Chairman for the day Ian Monotti, we discovered that Graeme is a member of the Rotary Club of Geelong West in neighbouring Rotary District 9780,

As Ian said, today I am here to talk to you about “POO”. I probably should be more polite and call it passing a motion but that sounds too much like passing a motion at a meeting, which requires a mover and a seconder.

Graeme then asked the question, “What did you call it when you were a child? and the response came back doing number twos. “Exactly, and the number two is very relevant to my presentation today”.

He then told us that bowel cancer is number two behind only lung cancer as the biggest killer of humans. Also, Australia is number two behind only New Zealand, as the country with the highest prevalence of bowel cancer per head of population. No one is exactly sure why.

More questions for the audience. “Which sex has the higher prevalence of bowel cancer?” and the obvious answer was MALE. “Then which sex does the most Bowelscans?” and the equally obvious answer was FEMALE. “And finally, given that MALES have the higher prevalence of bowel cancer, why do they not do the more Bowelscans?” and the more than obvious answer was because WE reckon WE are bullet-proof.

Graeme then spoke about the usage of the $10 Rotary Bowelscan testing kit, compared to the free equivalent Government sponsored kit. The Rotary kit has a return rate of around 80% of all kits sold, whereas that return rate of the Government kit is around 40%. Furthermore, the cost of Rotary kit

compares favourably with equivalent commercial kits on the market which cost in excess of $20.

WE NEED TO BE FAR MORE BOWEL CANCER AWARE. This was Graeme’s next message. When the visible physical symptoms, such as stomach pains and blood in the toilet, occur, it is often too late – annual preventative testing is the answer. And, bowel

cancer is not necessarily an old person’s disease. Evidence shows that people in their forties

have contacted the disease.

At this point, Graeme invited Anna to come up and read a short

passage and prefaced it by saying that a Rotarian was discussing the Bowelscan program with a pharmacist and a young casual female employee overheard the conversation, Anna then read out what she said “It is my father’s birthday tomorrow and I am going to buy him one of those kits for his birthday.” When asked why the reply was “Because he is very important to me and I

love him very much.”

Graeme kept stressing point; GET INVOLVED. Everyone

is a candidate for bowel cancer. Don’t just do the test yourself.

All you oldies with middle-aged children, buy them a kit and make them

use it. That’s far better than burying them should they contract bowel cancer. Promote

bowel cancer awareness to the public, involve the other Bendigo Rotary Clubs and make sure that your friends and acquaintances do the test.

It was certainly a stirring and passionate presentation and, following some very relevant questions, Chairman Ian thanked Graeme and presented him with a bottle of red wine (because I forgot the soap again). Graeme responded by saying that drinking red wine does not prevent you from taking the test.

ANNA’S ANTICS

Anna told us that her host family is away at the moment, so she has spent the week staying with a friend. And over the long weekend, with most local students studying for exams, she just hung-out with the other exchange students in Bendigo doing whatever teenagers do when they are hanging out.

I spoke to Jim Mahoney, Ron Rogers and Peter Reading about Alan Cox and they didn’t seem to be as uplifted as Barry Penna was last week about Alan’s condition. Peter even commented that he thought the hospital should be giving him better care. Currently, the family is looking for a nursing home and Alan seems resigned to spending the rest of days there. Not an encouraging prognosis at this stage.Club Changeover Dinners

As one Rotary year comes to and end it also means that we will soon be saying goodbye to Anna as she heads back to Finland. All should put in their diaries to be at club meeting on July 10th to hear her farewell speech.As coincidence will have it our new Exchange Student arrives on the same day and we will be welcoming Zsófi Szabó who comes all the way from Hungary. We will find out in due course but it is either Sophie or Sophia in English.At this stage I am going with

Sophie. Her favourite hobby is horse riding and looks like she is very good in jumping as I see a number of trophies in the background of a photo. She also loves reading and listening to music. Her dream as she loves animals is one day to be a Vet so if anyone has contacts in the horse riding clubs or knows a Vet I am sure she would like to explore this in Australia.Sophie’s father is a Journalist and loves writing and publishes lots of articles in the town’s major newspaper, while her mother (a

former teacher) works in a local job centre.We as normal always look to members to either host and also be involved with our Exchange Students by asking them out for a meal or if doing something on a weekend that would be of interest why not ask Sophie along. Sophie will be staying with Alida and Paul Robinson and family when she arrives and we will soon see her at club meetings so please make yourself known to her.

Chief Commissioner Ken Lay APM was appointed on 14 November 2011.

He started work with Victoria Police in 1974 and since that time has gained significant experience in a wide range of policing roles including operational, training and corporate roles as well as lengthy periods of service in both the rural and metropolitan areas. Ken’s most recent roles include the Deputy Commissioner (Strategy and Organisational Development), Deputy Commis-sioner (Road Policing), the Assistant Commissioner with responsibility for Vic-toria’s Traffic and Transit issues and as the Assistant Commissioner in Charge of policing services for the north-west geographical area of Victoria, one of the largest police regions in the State

As Chief Commissioner, he sits on numerous professional State and National Boards and Committees. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Com-pany Directors, the International Association of Police Chiefs and the Austral-asian College of Road Safety.

As Chief Commissioner, Ken will have responsibility for management and op-erations of an organisation of over 15,000 employees which will grow to well over 17,000 by the end of 2014. One of Ken’s major priorities will be manag-ing the recruitment and seamless integration of 1700 police and 940 protec-tion service officers to the organisation during his tenure as Commissioner.

A DEA officer stopped at a ranch in Texas , and talked with an old rancher.He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.”The rancher said, “Okay , but don’t go in that field over there.....”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA officer verbally exploded saying, “ Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me !”Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher.“See this badge?! This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish.... On any land !! No questions asked or answers given!! Have I made myself clear......do you understand ?!!” The rancher nodded politely, apologized, and went about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher heard loud screams, looked up, and saw the DEA officer running for his life, being chased by the rancher’s big Santa Gertrudis bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it seemed likely that he’d sure enough
