On May 4 the Stow-Munroe
Public Library levy passed with a
vote of 3,556 to 2,801. Thank
you Stow and Munroe Falls
voters! Immediately, library
employees worked into the night
to eliminate the 7 day check-
outs on new items and return
them to 14 days. When the
Board of Trustees met on May
17, the following changes were
made:
Immediately increase new
materials budget by $50,000
to supplement until levy
money arrives in 2011.
Eliminate the $3 charge for
Inter-Library Loans.
No more Friday closings (with
the exceptions of holidays.)
Patrons can once again
place holds on DVDs.
The popular database
Reference USA has been
restored.
Restore book bin delivery to
Day Care centers.
The passage of this levy was a
group effort. Thank you to
everyone who supported us. We
look forward to serving you!

“Make Waves at Your Library” is the theme for the Adult Summer Reading Program this year, which runs from June 9 through August 6.
There are two ways to participate. Fill out an entry form for every book you read or listen to on CD, tape or Playaway. Place the form in the entry box at the front desk. Winners will be chosen each week to win great prizes. There will be one grand prize winner who will win a $100 prepaid Visa card courtesy of
the Friends of the Library.
You can also play the “Make Waves at Your Library” Game. Pick up your game sheet at
the Information Desk beginning June 9. Displayed in the library are posters of staff members vacationing at different exotic locations. Your job is to figure out where they are. Each week stop by the Information Desk and get a clue card. Each clue has something to do with the locations. If you miss a week, just ask to see last week’s card. Submit your
completed form at the end. A winner will be drawn from all entries with eight correct vacation locations.
For more info, contact the Adult Information Desk at 330-688-3295.
Teen and Children’s Summer Reading Programs begin June 9 as well! See www.smfpl.org for all the details!

were seen throughout
the Stow and Munroe Falls
area before the May 4 election.
There are two great ways to
Participate in
Summer Reading.
Last year, the Adult
Information Desk answered
98,749 questions. What
types of things are asked?
Here is a sampling of
questions from May provided
from Barbara Nelson,
assistant head of reference
services.
Question: I am new to the area
and don’t know any people.
What does the library have to
offer to help me meet new
people?
Answer: We have 3 Adult
Book Discussion groups, a
Friends of the Library group,
a writer’s group, a Family
Folklore group, a Bridge
group, Quilter’s Group and a
Whittler’s group that meet at
the library. I think we have
something for everyone .
Question: Do you have to live
in Stow or Munroe Falls to
get a library Card?
Answer: No. The only
residency requirement is that
you live in the state of Ohio.
In fact, any citizen of Ohio is
eligible to go to any library in
the whole state and apply for
a library card.
Question: I have a neighbor
from Guatemala who has
difficulty with English. Does
the library teach English as a
Second Language?.
Answer: Project Learn of
Summit County does teach
English classes in our Library.
They can be reached at 330-
643-9195 or
Although the library staff
does not teach English
classes we do have an ESL
(English as a Second
Language) collection of
materials that can be
borrowed.

writer for The Akron Beacon

I am very shy when I first

on Saturday, May 1 be-

pull off another successful
Touch-a Truck event in
the parking lot of our li-
brary! Nearly 500 kids

tended high into the air.

Kids of all ages were able
to run around in the back
of the UPS truck, sit in the
front seats of all the
vehicles (and honk the
horns!), and talk to the
firefighters. The mailman
was there and the UPS
driver and tow truck
driver, too! The UPS driver
even brought his dog
named “Brown.” It was a
great day!
