been a joyous occasion— a call from Presi-dent Barack Obama in-forming him that hisson would be awardedthe military’s highesthonor — was over-shadowed by a father’ssor row.
“I’d still ratherhave him back than all
the medals in the world,” said the62-year-old retired teacher. “Ijust want my son back.”
Three years after he buriedhis oldest son, Army Sgt. 1st
Class Jared C. Monti, 30, killedin Afghanistan trying to save hisfellow soldiers, the Raynham fa-ther learned Tuesday he wouldtravel to Washington, D.C., to re-ceive the Medal of Honor on hisson’s behalf.
“It’s very, very bittersweet,”
Paul Monti said Thursday frominside his Center Street home.“I’m sort of going through ev-erything that I went throughwhen he died.”
Jared Monti will become thefirst Massachusetts residentsince the Vietnam War to receivethe Medal of Honor — “the na-tion’s highest medal for valor incombat,” according to the Army.
Army Reservist Sgt. KevinMoreira, 30, of Raynham, whoserves as commander of Bridge-water VFW Post 2125, said thehonor is “huge” for the regionand the nation.
“That comes right from thepresident,” Moreira said. “Yo udon’t just give that out.”
As of Thursday evening, nodate for Monti’s ceremony hadbeen set. The father of the fallensoldier said an Army official toldhim it would be mid-September.
