Monti removed his black, rectangle- framed glasses and massaged the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. He tried to smile when he put the glasses back on, keeping his composure. What should’ve been a joyous occasion — a call from Presi- dent Barack Obama in- forming him that his son would be awarded the military’s highest honor — was over- shadowed by a father’s sorrow. “I’d still rather have him back than all the medals in the world,” said the 62-year-old retired teacher. “I just want my son back.” Three years after he buried his oldest son, Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti, 30, killed in Afghanistan trying to save his fellow soldiers, the Raynham fa- ther learned Tuesday he would travel to Washington, D.C., to re- ceive the Medal of Honor on his son’s behalf. “It’s very, very bittersweet,” Paul Monti said Thursday from inside his Center Street home. “I’m sort of going through ev- erything that I went through when he died.” Jared Monti will become the first Massachusetts resident since the Vietnam War to receive the Medal of Honor — “the na- tion’s highest medal for valor in combat,” according to the Army. Army Reservist Sgt. Kevin Moreira, 30, of Raynham, who serves as commander of Bridge- water VFW Post 2125, said the honor is “huge” for the region and the nation. “That comes right from the president,” Moreira said. “You don’t just give that out.” As of Thursday evening, no date for Monti’s ceremony had been set. The father of the fallen soldier said an Army official told him it would be mid-September. Nutting was the third person to be at- tacked by a fox in the Oak Street area in two days, as officials intensified a campaign to rid the region of the animals. On Thursday, they got one of them. A fox clamped onto Nut- ting’s right ankle about 9 p.m. Wednesday as she and a friend were gathering vegetables in her garden. Earlier Wednesday, just a few houses away, Mary Seaver, 69, was attacked and bitten by a fox in her front yard.
