About MATLAB!
Yes, we will use MATLAB a lot
! Using UMBC Resources
! All campus computers have access to MATLAB
! You can establish a virtual terminal and access itfrom anywhere
!
But, there are only a limited number of licenses toshare
! Having your own
! I own MATLAB + 1 toolbox for my business:
$3500 + $500/year! You can own a fully functional student version for
$99 (includes MATLAB and 10 toolboxes); or,
! A student version for $49 + $10 per toolbox
! It is useful for almost every engineering course!

What does an engineer do?
! What does an engineer do?
! Apply math and science:
! Engineers are mathematiciansand scientists
! Design solutions
! Engineers are problem solvers
! Manage projects
! Almost all engineers needrudimentary project management
skills…! …some need additional project
management training

Why are you here?
! Good at Math/Science?
! Like Math/Science?
! Engineering experience in HS (PLTW)
! Family member is an engineer
! There are good jobs for engineers
! There are good jobs…
! …but they go to good engineering students…
! …not to mediocre engineering students.
! “C’s get degrees”… But not engineering jobs

Yes, there are good jobs!
! You have to be careful about job statistics…
! …but multiple surveys agree that engineering jobspay very well
! These are average or median salaries for goodengineering students
! Median = 50th percentile
! Average = S =1

But…
! The salaries are good because the subject matter isdifficult…
! Everyone can’t do this!
! There’s LOTS OF MATH…and SCIENCE…
! …and very detailed and complex (no pun) material
! You will put in lots of work to earn these salaries, both as a student and as a worker
