Procedure to follow in the case of a clogged EGR sole-noid valve.
I - DESCRIPTION OF THE SOLENOID VALVE
The EGR solenoid valve is shown above in the activeposition: solenoid valve open.
II - CLEANING THE EGR SOLENOID VALVE
Remove the EGR solenoid valve using the tool (Mot. 1729) (see the Workshop Repair Manual for the ve-hicle concerned 14A, Emission control, Exhaust recirculation solenoid valve):
- position the spigots (7) of the tool (Mot. 1729) in themounting holes of the EGR solenoid valve,
- take care to fully drive home the spigots (7),
- turn the tool in small steps to detach the EGR sole-noid valve from its housing.
Clean the EGR solenoid valve (mechanical part on-ly) using a cleaning jet.

STAGE 1
Protect the vent holes (3) of the solenoid valve usingadhesive tape (8).
Liberally drench the solenoid valve with the cleaningproduct whilst scrubbing it for 1 min.
STEP 2
Open the solenoid valve using the tool (Mot. 1757)(see EGR solenoid valve actuator: Use).
Clean the mechanical part of the solenoid valve by simultaneously scrubbing and drenching with clea-ning product for 2 min, paying attention to:
- the valve seats,
- the surfaces of the valves,
- the shaft guide of the valves.

WARNING
Do not wet the electrical part of the solenoidvalve with the cleaning product.
Keep the solenoid valve tilted with the connectorat the top.
Only use brushes with plastic or non-corrosivemetal (brass) bristles.
Cleaning using hard or corrosive tools (e.g: screwdriver) can damage the valves or their shaft, and lead to:
- a leak from the valves leading to power loss,
- loss of the upper valve, leading to destruction ofthe motor.

STEP 3
Run the solenoid valve opening/closing cycle using the tool (Mot. 1757) (see EGR solenoid valve ac-tuator: Use). During the cycle clean the mechanical part of the solenoid valve by simultaneously scrub-bing and drenching with cleaning product, paying at-tention to:
- the valve seats,
- the surfaces of the valves,
- the shaft guide of the valves.
STAGE 4
After the opening/closing cycle, open the solenoidvalve using the tool (Mot. 1757).
Scrub the upper valve over its entire surface and cir-cumference.
Scrub the lower valve around its entire circumferen-ce:
- scrub the area of the lower valve accessible throu-gh the window (9),
- pick up the upper valve by hand (do not use a tool),and turn it a 1/4 turn
- scrub the area of the lower valve accessible throu-gh the window (9),
- continue until the valve has been cleaned over itsentire circumference.
Repeat STAGE 3 twice more.
Check there are no bristles from the brush in the so-lenoid valve.

WARNING
Only use brushes with plastic or non-corrosivemetal (brass) bristles.

Open the solenoid valve using the tool (Mot. 1757).
Use a compressed air gun to blow out the solenoidvalve.
Refit the EGR solenoid valve (see 14A, Emissioncontrol, EGR solenoid valve: Removal - refitting).
After cleaning the EGR solenoid valve, follow theprogramming procedure carried out after EGR sole-noid valve replacement (see MR Fault Finding for thevehicle concerned 13B, Diesel injection, Fault fin-ding - Component replacement).

I - DESCRIPTION
Once the EGR solenoid valve has been removed, the tool (Mot. 1757) allows it to be controlled in pre-paration for cleaning.
II - OPERATION
The tool (Mot. 1757) performs the following func-tions:
- opening the solenoid valve,
- operating the solenoid valve opening/closing cycle.
1 - Connecting the tool
Connect the connector (4) of the tool (Mot. 1757) tothe solenoid valve.
Connect the adapter (3) of the tool (Mot. 1757) to apower socket.
2 - Solenoid valve control
To open or close the EGR solenoid valve, brieflypress on the button (1).
In the open position (power supplied to the solenoidvalve), the indicator light (2) comes on.
To start the solenoid valve opening/closing cycle, hold down the button (1) for longer:
- solenoid valve vibrates for 90 s,
- the indicator light (2) flashes.
To interrupt a running cycle, press briefly on the but-ton (1).

Note
The EGR solenoid valve actuator tool can beused to check the solenoid valve.
An indicator will sound in case of:
- misconnection of the tool to the solenoid valve,
- solenoid valve short circuit,
- break in the solenoid valve circuit.
