Make as many of these adjustableracks as you need to store boardsflat and out of the way. Wall-mount them over studs.

1To make each rack, start bycutting two pieces of fi"

plywood to the sizes shown onDrawing 1 to create the side plates forthe board bunk.

2From an 8'-long 2×4 cut a piece40" long. Rip about fi" from one

edge. Then rip the other edge toachieve the final 2fi" width.

3From the ripped stock, cut thedividers to length, as shown,

making sure to miter both ends at 5°.(Note that the bottom divider is 4¤"

long.) The workpiece is longer thanyou’ll need, but this allows you towork around knots to make thedividers as strong as possible.

4Cut a spacer 2Å"-wide from ascrap of 2×4 stock, and use this

as a spacer to align the dividers. Now glue and screw the dividers tothe plates, where shown.

5To make the arms, rip a secondpiece of 2×4 to 2‡" wide. Again,

avoid sections with knots to ensuremaximum strength. (We made fourarms for each rack assembly.) Miterone end of each arm at 5°. Then rout‹" round-overs on the edges andends where shown. Don’t rout the

mitered end. Sand all the partsthrough 150-grit, and apply a clearfinish if desired.

6To mount the rack assembly, locate your walls studs, and then

drill ›" holes through four of thedividers, as shown. Use these holesto mark your wall, and then drill ‹"pilot holes 2" deep into the studs. (Ifthe studs are exposed—nodrywall—then make the pilot holes2fi"-deep.)

7Screw the rack assembly onto thestuds using ›×5" lag screws,

spacing them every 16" or 24". Slipin the arms, and add your prizedlumber stock.

Storage Solution 2: Shop-smart scrap sorter

Corral your cutoffs with thishandy mobile cart. It lets youorganize your stock by length soyou’ll always know exactly whatyou have at a glance.

1Begin by cutting the plywoodsides, shelves, and dividers to the

sizes shown on Drawing 2.

2Rip stock (we used poplar) tosize to create the edge banding.

Then apply the edge banding, where

shown. This will dress up the projectwhile protecting the plywood edgesfrom nicks.

3Place both side pieces face toface and drill shank holes for the

#8×2" screws that will hold the carttogether. Also drill shank and pilotholes, and then assemble each of thedivider cubbies.

4Sand the parts through 150-grit,and apply two coats of clear

finish to all the cart’s pieces.

5Now assemble the cart. We usedscrews only—no glue—to allow

tweaking the fit of each piece.

6Install four 3" swivel casters tothe bottom corners of the cart,

where shown. To do this, turn thecabinet upside down, place a castorat each corner, mark and drill theholes, and screw the casters in place.

Storage Solution 3: Upstanding sheet storage cart

Sheet goods never store easily, and they take up a lot of shopspace. This tall cart allows you tostore full sheets, half sheets, andcutoffs in a small area. Thoughsizeable, it rolls around with littleeffort. We’ve even included wall-mounting brackets you can add ifyour shop floor is rough or out oflevel. If your ceiling is less than 9',take a pass on this project.

Note: For structural strength, weused ‡" plywood; five sheets sufficefor the project shown. If you intendto finish or paint the project, you’llfind it easier to simply apply it to thefull sheets before you begin cuttingand assembly. We applied two coatsof water-based finish using a paintpad, taking care to not coat theplywood edges.

1Cut the top, bottom, back, andshelves to the sizes shown on

Drawing 3.

2Next, cut edge banding (we usedpoplar) to the sizes shown in the

drawing. Note that the edge bandingon the front edge of the top andbottom extends these plywood partsby 1", whereas the edge banding onthe front edges of the top, bottom, sides, divider, and shelves extendthe plywood parts by ‹". Thisensures alignment. Now, cut theshelf cleats to size.

3Apply edging where shown, andthe same finish or paint used on

the plywood parts. Attach the shelfcleats using #8ׇ" screws.

4Assemble the cart using #8×2"screws, as shown. You may want

a friend to help move the configurationand steady the large pieces. We foundit easiest to install the shelves betweenone side and the divider, and then addthe back, top and bottom, and finalside. When done, install 3" swivelcasters, where shown. ¿
