    Introduction

FaceID applies Physical Linguis ic V sion Technologyto allow users to login

their computers, their electronic accounts, and email account without using traditional

passwords. Instead, FaceID can identified the users by analyzing the cognitive featuresof users faces. FaceID provide a unique biometric ID for the sake of the security of

both the virtual and the real worlds.

The unique vision processing and understanding platform invented by the chief scientist of YangsScientific Research Institute, called Physical Linguistics Vision Technology, constitutes thebackbone of FaceID software package for webcam-based personal security system andidentification used in Windows operating systems. FaceID targets the market of biometrics,

security technology, identification and verification. In the PC market, FaceID can serve as an advancedlogin system..

This document addresses the operations of the demo program of FaceID package. FaceID was firstreleased in October 27, 2005 and had been maintained and revised since then by Yangs Scientific ResearchInstitute, LLC.(Yangs Scientific).

There are two kinds of commercial packages associated with FaceID software package. The first one is forthe ender users and will be licensed to the ender users via a license fee per machine method. The secondone is a developers package to help computer programmers develop their own applications such as fileaccess control system, account management systems, and online shopping.

The webcam used by FaceID can be a cheap and low-end product, the working condition is important and

yet not critical. The users can choose the FaceID to automatically detect and identify a given face, to buildtheir own face database and IDs. FaceID gives users more flexibility to tradeoff between false alarm rateand the security of the face login systems.

    Face Login Systems

    Using Webcams

This chapter shows how to build your own face login controlsystem by using a webcam and FaceID software pack age.

To build a personal account login system by using a webcam and FaceID,you need to have at least one webcam connecting to the USB ports ofyour computer. FaceID will work to its optimal potential when the settingsof the computer, the lighting condition, the choice of the webcam are

    optimal.

    Choosing Webcams

We recommend the user to use webcams with good optical systems. To reducecost, many webcams use cheap plastic lens, their optical resolutions are low. A ruleof thumb is to choose a webcam with big glass lens. The webcam to the left isbetter than the one to the right because the left one has a much bigger glass lensthan the plastic lens installed in the right hand side webcam. FaceID can supportcheap and low-end webcams under typical working conditions. The resolution of awebcam is also an issue to take care of. The recommend Webcam resolution is640x480 pixels. FaceID can also work on 320x280 pixel resolution though.

    Choosing Computers

FaceID uses the advanced image processing technology called physical linguisticvision technologies. Although FaceID has been optimized to take less computing

resources, the image-processing nature of webcam video stream makes a trade-offbetween the performance of mouse controlled by using webcam and the speed ofcomputer that is directly related to the price of the computer. Since FaceID uses aUSB webcam, the bandwidth of your USB port can affect the responding speed ofthe FaceID. For example, a slow computer with a narrow USB bandwidth can notfollow the fast motion of a user. However, since the intensive computation can ofFaceID only happens when an Enrolling process is going on, the user might notfeel a slow PC cause big troubles.

    Working Conditions of Webcams

FaceID needs to work under a range of conditions. The proper working conditionsfor FaceID are:

A good lightening condition. A good enrolling environment. The background is not too messy and confusingThe following are snapshots taken under good working conditions.

Case 1: Simple background and few reflection of light.

    Enroll and Login Sett ings

FaceID has two main sets of actions: Enroll and Login. There are two Enroll andtwo Login actions listed as follow.

The Start Enroll toolbar controller enables FaceID to start a fresh Enroll for anexisting user or a new user. For new user, a new face base will be setup and forexisting the existing face bases will be updated and maintained.

The Finish Enroll toolbar controller enables FaceID to clear up the collected face

images and apply Physical Linguistic Vision Technologies to the collected data. Start

Enroll must be ended by Finish Enroll in order to completely enroll a user.

The Logout toolbar controller enables FaceID to close the login section of thecurrent user.(it is not implemented yet).

    Enroll a New User

FaceID provides a very simple and automatic method to enroll a new user. Pleasefollow the following steps to enroll your first account with FaceID. Before youdoing enroll, please make sure that for at least 5 minutes that you are the only one

that the webcam can look at. If some people are far away in the background willnot hurt as long as their faces are not too big.

Start up the FaceID program either from the task bar, the desktop or the quick-launch bar, you will get the main interface at follow:

Where would you like to put your face on the picture is not important at all, theonly important thing is the size of your face should be reasonable big. Then click

    Automaticallygenerated facesamples

The 10 face samples are gathered by the FaceID automatically, what the user needto do is to look into the Webcam and perhaps, in case of nothing to happen, moveyour head side to side, up and down gently such that the webcam can find yourface.

Observe that the last three samples of face is bad because only very limit portions

of the face are captured, we need to delete them from the captured image base. The thumbnail images listing to the right side can be easily edited by using yourmouse clicks. You can select any a small image by left-click it, when an image isselected, it will be highlighted by using a color frame. In the following case, the firstimage was left-clicked.

Even taking off glasses could not cause any trouble. For many other systems, thiswill result in a absolute REFUSE.

We just show the robustness of FaceID to different settings of the user face, thefollowing experiments to show the low false alarm rate of FaceID. The robustnessto the surrounding change of face and low false alarm rate are two factors that need

to tradeoff, FaceID does an excellent tradeoff between them. We put FaceID toshoot the first unknown user, a red cross means a deny of login.

    Comparing w ith VeriLook 2.0

In this section the performances of FaceID 1.0.0.2 is compared with those ofVeriLook 2.0.

    1. FaceID can locate a face rapidly and reliably than VeriLook 2.0. As shown inthe following screen shot of VeriLook 2.0, it failed to locate the face. Sincelocating a face is the first step of any face login system, in this case, VeriLookfailed to work.

Meanwhile, the same face could be easily located and an action refuse was issuedby FaceID as shown in the following screenshot.(Note that FaceID takes the

natural view of a scene while VeriLook reflect the natural view horizontally):

    Known Issues, Limitations and Advantages

The FaceID software has the possibility to occasionally issue wrong login signalswhen the webcam or the person is in rapid moving and the captured imagebecome blurred. In the future version this can be solved by using a simple motiondetecting algorithm.

If the illuminating conditions were changed dramatically to cause deny of login, the

user can enroll a new set of login face image. In the future version this function willbe implemented more user friendly. In this version, the user can solve this problemby enroll under a second user name.

Simpler interface and fewer user interferences give FaceID the very edge to beatsimilar products. Since the designing platform of FaceID is based on physicallinguistics, the semantic model for FaceID is rooted in computational verb theoryand fuzzy theory, the modification for different application requirements is entirelymanageable and transparent to developers.

    Troubleshooting

This chapter shows how to resolve some common issues that onemight come across when using FaceID software to construct a

    home secure system.

To explore the full ability of the FaceID, the working conditions of theentire system including your PC, the webcam and FaceID should beconsidered comprehensively. The quality of captured image frame willhave critical influence to the final readings. The following are some tips for

    operating FaceID.

Hold you webcam with a stable support.

When users enroll and login, make sure only one person in the camera view. Keep the same stable lightening condition for both enrollment and login will

be helpful. Otherwise, one user can enroll again once the lightening conditionchanged significantly to increase the false turn-down rate.

If for a long time that the camera doesnt find the face of the user, look intothe camera and turn side to side and up down head gently and smoothly.

In case that you have some problems, the followings should be useful tips.

    Webcams Are Busy

After you start the FaceID, if you see the following Video Source dialogueinterface, it is most likely that your webcams are used by some other applicationssuch as Internet chat software or video conference software, etc. To solve this

problem, you need to either choose an available webcam from the list, or

release the webcam from other software.
