Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, we have all been trying to navigate a new “normal”. We hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy during these challenging times.

The ICOI recently teamed up with Park Dental Research to produce face shields. We donated these to Bergen New Bridge Medical Center to help support the medical staff who are fighting this disease on a daily basis. Thank you to all of the first responders who are keeping us safe and hopefully these shields will help to keep you safe.

Themed “Future Trends in Oral Implantology”, this event brought together a stellar line-up of world class speakers focusing on the trends in oral implantology as well as prevention of dental implant complications.

Pre-symposium courses held by each of these companies on Thursday, February 27th, were very well attended. Thank you, sponsors, for your contribution and support in making this event a success.

After the pre-symposium courses, the rest of the day was devoted to our “Young Implantologists.” The afternoon session on Thursday, February 27th, showcased the innovative ideas of our newer practitioners in the field of implant dentistry. Friday morning, the main podium lectures began with Dr. Randolph Resnik discussing “The Treatment of the Posterior Maxilla: Short Implants vs. Crestal Bone Grafting vs. Lateral Protocols.” Dr. Stephen Caldwell followed with his lecture, “Incorporation of CBCT/Digital Imaging into Advanced Implant/Restorative Treatment Planning and Surgical Execution” and after a short break, Dr. Michael Pruett continued with “Implant Placement and Provisionalization: The New Trends.” Dr. Alejandro Sosa concluded the morning session with “Digital Smile Planning - Its Role in Treatment Planning and Implant Placement.” After lunch, Dr. John Conness reviewed “Stackable Surgical and Prosthetic Guides: A New Protocol for Fully Guided, Immediate Load Full-Arch Dental Implant Reconstruction” followed by Dr. Aldo Leopardi with his lecture titled “Aesthetic Zone Clinical Realities: Regenerative Approaches versus Prosthetic Equivalents”.

The final two speakers of the day were Dr. Frank DeLuca followed by Dr. David Donatelli who spoke about “Emerging Legal Theories in Dental Litigation” and “Avoiding Prosthetic Complications with Full-Arch Immediate-Load Prostheses”, respectively.

Saturday morning began with Dr. Joseph Cillo, Jr. and his discussion of “Influence of Novel Systemic Medications on Osseointegration” followed by Dr. Ady Palti who addressed “Implementing Digital Solutions in Implant Dentistry.” After a short morning break, Dr. Cyndi Nguyen covered “The Prevention and Management of Nerve and Arterial Injuries in Implant Dentistry”

Our Gala took place on Friday evening at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It was a lovely evening of dancing, dining and cocktails among our prehistoric predecessors.

The beautiful Marriott Marquis in Houston Texas was host to the ICOI/ADIA Winter Implant Symposium held on February 27-29, 2020. This modern venue offered beautiful rooms, wonderful restaurants and an amazing outdoor pool in the shape of the state of Texas. Attendees were impressed by the stellar group of main podium speakers and the ADIA continued in its tradition of providing the most up to date dental implant education for the entire auxiliary team.

The entire dental team started the congress together on Thursday listening to the Young Implantologists. The line-up of up and coming dental implant speakers was followed by a fantastic cocktail hour. Attendees enjoyed cocktails and appetizers while listening to their colleagues present table clinics and posters. Doctors along with three ADIA members, Tabitha Acret, Patsy Avery and, Sandi Tocquigny showcased their skills and knowledge to an attentive audience of their peers.

The ADIA program continued Friday with an outstanding roster of main podium speakers. Tracy Butler, Debbie Seidel-Bittke, Michelle Strange and Anna Louise Tolan shared their knowledge and experience and entertained the audience with their personal stories.

The highly acclaimed ADIA advanced certification courses were presented to an eager audience of auxiliaries on Saturday. The certification courses are specifically designed for assistants, hygienists, practice managers and implant coordinators which provided attendees with an abundance of knowledge making them an integral and indispensable part of the dental implant team. The certification courses are also the pathway to ADIA Fellowship, the most advanced of the ADIA credentials. Auxiliaries who have attained ADIA Fellowship have demonstrated their commitment and dedication to implant dentistry and are often asked to speak on the ADIA main podium.

ICOI ASEAN CONGRESS SRI LANKA

The Galadari Hotel Colombo in Colombo, Sri Lanka was the setting for the ICOI’s most recent international congress, which was held January 23-25, 2020. The ICOI ASEAN Congress was planned thoroughly by Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Nettemu to ensure that the participants gained new perspectives, fostered new friendships and experienced co-operative learning with the leaders in this field.

Themed “Digital Implant Dentistry - Redefining Treatment Concepts”, this event served as a networking platform for dentists from across the globe.

The first day featured a full afternoon podium which was an enriching experience to all its participants. Delivering knowledge based on their years of experience as well as sound research background, the world-renowned speakers included: Dr. Richard Leesungbok with his lecture titled, “Top-down Treatment Planning and Dental Rehabilitation with Analog-Digital Workflow” followed by Dr. Vijayanayagam Thuthikaran who discussed, “Horizontally Resorbed Ridges and Implant Placement”. After a short break, delegates joined Dr. Jaibin George as he reviewed, “Redefining Sinus Lift: Minimally Invasive Transcrestal Sinus Augmentation (MITSA)”. Friday morning, the main podium lectures began with Prof. Christian Makary addressing “Accelerated Loading Protocols: A Scientific and Clinical Rationale”. Dr. Alvaro Ordonez followed with his lecture, “Digital Occlusion and 4D Mandibular Dynamics in Implant Dentistry”. After lunch, Dr. Soon Boon Lee discussed “Digital Technology in Dental Implant Planning and Guided Surgery” followed by Dr. Ramesh Chowdhary with his lecture titled “Dental Implant Occlusion-Digital Evaluation”. The final two speakers of the day were Prof. Tarun Kumar followed by Dr. Elisa Choukroun. Prof. Kumar spoke about, “The Changing Paradigm of Aesthetic Zone Management: Preservation to 3D Reconstruction” while Dr. Choukroun presented, “Fighting Oxidative Stress in Oral Surgery: Biologic Solutions”.


Saturday morning began with Dr. Marco Roy and his discussion of “Guided Surgery Technique and Digital Dentistry in Dental Implantology”, followed by Dr. Sang-Choon Cho addressing “Influence of 3D Printing Technology for Implant Dentistry”.

After lunch, Prof. Ki-Tae Koo kicked off the last session of the event with “Ridge Preservation/Augmentation Using Open Healing Approach in Compromised Sockets”. Dr. Ady Palti concluded the event with “Digital Dental Solutions in the Implant Practice: From a Single Tooth to a Full Arch - A Step-by-Step Review”.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event possible. Especially Prof. Dr. Sunil Kumar Nettemu. He along with his wife, Dr. Sowmya Nettem, worked tirelessly to ensure the event was a success.

30TH ANNUAL NYU / ICOI IMPLANT SYMPOSIUM

NYU College of Dentistry and the ICOI’s joint effort was once again a very successful event. Together we are filling a growing need that the dental community has for advanced education in implantology. Not to mention the increasing number of participants seeking ICOI advanced credentials.

Drs. Maryse Manasse and Ady Palti, welcomed everyone to the event and were followed by Dr. Stephen Chu with his lecture, “A Paradigm Shift in Macro Implant Design to Enhance Esthetic Outcomes with Post-extraction Socket Implants”. Dr. Hom Lay Wang followed with “EP-DDS Treatment for Predictability Regenerating Peri-Implantitis Defects”. Just before the morning break, Dr. Joseph Choukroun addressed, “Biological Conditions of Bone Growth and Maintenance: Managing the ‘Oxidative Stress”. And finishing up the morning session, Dr. Piotr Majewski discussed, “Bone Block Grafts versus GBR Procedure: Clinical and Biological Indications for Different Regenerative Procedures”.

After lunch Dr. Craig Misch kicked off the afternoon with “Avoiding and Managing Complications with Bone Augmentation.” Dr. Scott MacLean then presented “How to Improve Your Patients Quality of Life by Minimizing and Dealing with Dental Implant Complications”. And Dr. Philippe Russe finished out the program with “Mandibular Nerve Transposition: Is it Still an Option?”.

The Advanced Credentialing awards ceremony followed the last lecture of the day where 20 Diplomates, 1 Mastership and 101 Fellowships were presented to practitioners from around the world. Congratulations to all and thank you to everyone who made this event a success.

More than 400 participants at the first ICOI Bahrain Meeting in cooperation with Dr. Mohammad Shadha and his fantastic team. A great scientific program reviewed the newest techniques and materials in implant dentistry. Speakers included: Dr. Wail Kinani, Dr. Maysoon Al-Alawi, Dr. Nabiel Alghazali, Prof, Walter Devoto, Dr. Bader Al-Baqshi, Dr. Wael Elias, Dr. Muhannad Takruri, Prof. Christian Makary, Prof. S. Balagopal, and Dr. Ady Palti.

After the scientific lectures the first module of the new Fellowship course took place with more than 20 participants. This ICOI fellowship program will be the first recognized implant training in Bahrain and will allow participants to insert implants after receiving their ICOI Fellowship Certificates.

A very interesting social program was offered to the participants and speakers. Visiting a famous Tea House and the 400 year old Tree of Life were just a part of it.

Other activities are being planned in the near future including advanced implant education with hands on and live surgeries to the local dentists.

An important meeting also took place, with the President and Vice President of the Saudi Arabian Dental Association discussing future Implant education in his country. We look forward to further collaborations in the years to come.

SFBSI, one of the French leading scientific implant societies, founded more than 30 years ago, joined ICOI in 2018. Their annual meeting was held October 2019 in the Meridien Hotel near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

In the morning and early afternoon, participants had the opportunity to update their knowledge on sinus elevation. The French ENT society issued 18 recommendations on the prerequisite to perform a crestal or lateral approach to the sinus. All the relevant anatomy and pathologies were reviewed, first radiologically, then clinically. In the afternoon, Dr. Roland Török shared his experience of GBR, reviewing different techniques and materials. Dr. Davy Debarque received his ICOI Fellowship from Dr. Török during the break.

ICOI AROUND THE WORLD continued

On October 17, 2019, the Symposium held by ICOI and CEU - San Pablo University in Madrid was a huge success. More than 150 attendees, and 9 master speakers were present.

Professors Manuel Fernández Dominguez and Antonio Coppel Jr., were Co-Chairmen of the event. Professors Samuel Olivan and José Antonio Blanco Rueda were also members of the organizing Committee, together with Coppel and Fernández.

There were 15 poster presentations, and the top three were awarded for their efforts.

Thank you to the six companies that were present: MPI, Klockner, Sinedent, JDent, Ziacom, and Dentariel.

Next autumn, again on the 17th of October, the ICOI Madrid Symposium will be held once again in Madrid. If necessary, due to the COVID-19 pandemic effects, it will take place online.

phases take place in Frankfurt am Main in a block format of 10 days per semester. The study program is unbiased and runs totally independent of financial sponsoring from the industry and implantology societies.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the program, participants from more than 50 countries travelled to Frankfurt am Main for a special implantology congress. In addition to scientific presentations by international keynote speakers from the Netherlands, Italy, Canada and China, the graduation of the graduating class of 2019 was also celebrated.

During the annual congress MOI graduates have the opportunity to take the ICOI diplomate exam. More than half of all MOI graduates took advantage of this opportunity in 2019 and in addition to their Master’s degree they also achieved the highest ICOI distinction - Diplomate status.

ICOI CHINA ANNUAL ACADEMIC CONFERENCENanjing, China On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of Nanjing Medical University and the 45th Anniversary of the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital, the third ICOI China Annual Academic Conference was successfully held in Nanjing from October 11 to 12, 2019 sponsored by Jiangsu Stomatological Association, the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, under the academic guidance of ICOI Expert Committee and co-organized by the Academic Dental Network. More than 400 dental professionals from all over the country attended the conference. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Tang Chunbo of Stomatology Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University, and Vice-President Yan Bin delivered the opening speech.

The theme of this conference was “Comprehensive Thinking, In-depth Interaction”, adhering to the academic concept of “multi-disciplinary collaborative treatment with planting as the core”. Professor Paul Weigl of Frankfurt University, Professor Philippe Russe, Vice President of the French Society, SFBSI, Chen Jiang, Yu Youcheng, Man Yi, Zhang Jian, Liu Feng, Tang Chunbo, Li Jingping, Zhou Yi, Ma Wei and more than 20 domestic and foreign experts and scholars in the field of dental implant made 16 special lectures.

On November, 5, 2019 Dr. Ady Palti, ICOI Co-Chairman, lectured about the importance of esthetics and minimally invasive implantology as the future of all dental offices and was very well received. The University of New England’s audience was especially interested in immediate implant placement and asked many questions on this subject.

The ICOI will continue this program, “Education in Implant Dentistry”, every year to help establish long-term relationships with all the major dental schools in the US. We look forward to the next meeting in New England.

The ICOI Executive Director, Betty Lukacs-Palti and ICOI Co-Chairman, Dr. Ady Palti visited the university on February 3, 2020. They had a full lecture room for a lunch and learn session offered by the ICOI on “Full Arch Aesthetics in the Daily Practice: A Step-by-Step Approach to Achieving Long-Term Success”. The students learned about long-term aesthetics in the dental office and the different methods to obtain it using a predictable and minimally invasive protocol in the daily practice.

The ICOI education activities are now including a new program introducing Implant Education to the senior students of major dental schools in the US.

The auditorium was packed with all senior dental students of the Columbia University Dental School, along with Dean Christian Stohler, during Dr. Ady Palti’s lecture titled, “Immediate Implant Placement for Perfect Esthetic Result”.

The lunch and learn organized on October 15, 2019 by ICOI’s Executive Director, Betty Lukacs and Carlos Galvez, DDS Candidate, Class of 2022, was a complete success and we are looking forward to the next lecture. This shows ICOI’s long-term dedication to Implant Education world wide and especially at US major Universities. Dr. Palti also presented the ICOI benefits for young dentists and promised to be back next year.
