    1/1

DEEP PURPLEne thing no one's ever accused DeepPurple of is simplicity. Now, as ifto atone for the overblown, the reconsti-tuted hard rock legend offers us simplicityitself: Directed-more or less-by DeepPurple's manager, Bruce Payne, thePerflect Strangers clip is less a rockvideo than a glorified home movie. Talkabout back-to-basics.

Since the band was completely againsthe idea of doing a typical, conceptual clipith lip-synching, Payne and produceraul Newman (no, not the movie-star-were left with aapproach. They videotapedband at Stowe, Vermont and Bedford,

England, with a sidetrip to drummer lanPaice's British mansion. It's hard to con-vince us that millionaire musicians arenormal, beer-guzzlin' guys like you 'n,me, but what the hell.Perfect Strangers was shot with arelatively new piece of video gear calledthe Betacam, a high-speed video camera,/recorder that uses the same coventional,Vz-inch tape you feed your Beta-formatVCR at home. The footage wasn't reallyplanned as a video, at lirst; the Deep pur-ple people are putting together a concert/documentary (which is probably due outany minute), and needed a video and thisstulf was kinda laying around and belore

anybody knew it, Marie Cantin andMichael Miner of Los Angeles' Rapid EyeMovement production house were calledin as relief pitchers. To them goes thelion's share of the credit.Oh, yes. The infamous soccer game thatopens this clip. It was a ritual between theband and the roadies last summer whileDeep Purple was recording in Stowe. Theband says it won the summer champion-ship, but the roadies argue that the win-ning goal is in question. Who's right?Well, among us beer-guzzlin' guys, it's a.matter of the golden rule: Whoever hasthe gold, makes the rules.
