Arizona Head Coach Jay Johnson: Arizona is coached by Jay Johnson, who is in his second year at the helm for the Wildcats. Previously, Johnson spent two years at the University of Nevada, where he went 72-42 and made one postseason appearance. In his first season at the helm of the Wildcats, Johnson led the team to a 49-24 record and an appearance in the College World Series Finals. The 49 wins for the Wildcats were the second-most in school his-tory. In Johnson’s first season, the Wildcats were Lafayette Regional Champions as well as Starkville Super Regional Champions. Arizona then advanced to the finals of the College World Series, staving off elimination three separate times in Omaha. Arizona finished the season ranked No. 2 in all five major Top 25 polls after being picked to finish 9th in the Pac-12 preseason coaches poll. For his efforts, Johnson was named the ABCA West Region Coach of the Year at the completion of the season. Under Johnson, the Wildcats had five first-team All-Pac-12 selections in Ryan Aguilar, Nathan Bannister, Bobby Dalbec, Zach Gibbons and Cody Ramer. Starting pitcher JC Cloney was selected as an honorable mention pick. Bannister, Gibbons and Ramer all received All-American honors as well, both from the ABCA and Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger. Perfect Game named Dalbec an honorable mention All-American as a relief pitcher. Johnson’s philosophy of putting pressure on the opposition’s defense translated beautifully to the Pac-12. The Wildcats had 81 sacrifice hits, establishing a new program record. Additionally, Gibbons, Ramer and Aguilar all hit over .300 with Gibbons leading the way at a robust .385. Gibbons flourished under the director of Johnson. With 107 hits as a senior, Gibbons finished with 291 for his career and now sits in fourth-place all-time at Arizona. His 107 hits last season were the second-most in a single-season by a Wildcat. Ramer was close behind, finishing with 105 hits and is tied with Terry Francona for the fourth-most hits in a single season. The two became just the second set of Arizona teammates to each record more than 100 hits in a season, joining Clark Crist and Francona, who each went over the century mark in 1979. On the mound, Arizona had one of its finest seasons ever. The Wildcats established a new single-season record for saves with 18, topping the previous high of 16, set four times prior. The Cats also had 508 strikeouts as a staff, which is the sixth-most in program history for a single sea-son. Arizona posted a team ERA of 3.18, the lowest by an Arizona team since 1974. The Tucson faithful responded to Johnson and the team’s success the Wildcats experienced during the season. The Wildcats drew an average of 3,043 fans to games in 2016, leading both the Pac-12 and all West Coast Schools. Nationally, the Wildcats ranked 19th.

Hitters Hit: The Wildcats wasted no time showing off their powerful offense this season. The Cats scored 49 runs in their opening series against Eastern Kentucky, the most runs they’ve scored in the first four games of the season since plating 51 in 2005. As a team, Arizona hit .377 with 24 extra-base hits. The .377 average leads the Pac-12. Coach Jay Johnson’s offense drew 26 walks and struck out just 12 times in four games, while posting an on-base percentage of .478. The Cats enter the McNeese State series with seven players who received 10 or more at-bats, hitting .400 or better so far in the early going. Jared Oliva, JJ Matijevic and Mitchell Morimoto all homered in the first series, marking the first time since 2011 the Cats had at least three home runs in the opening series of a season. The Cats had four homers in 2011 in the opening series against Eastern Michigan, with Josh Garcia accounting for three of them. This season’s three home runs in the opening series is the first time that’s happened in the Hi Corbett era. Arizona’s 24 extra-base hits are the most in the Pac-12. The next closest is Oregon State and Arizona State each with 13 extra-base hits so far this season.

Quintana had at least one hit and reached baes at least twice in each of his first four collegiate games. The highlight of Quintana’s opening weekend was Arizona’s second game of the season on Feb. 18. Quintana went 5 for 6 with five RBI, three doubles and a pair of runs scored. Quin-tana became the first Arizona freshman since Trevor Crowe in 2003 to have a five-hit game in his first series with the program. The Las Vegas native then became the first player in school history to win league player of the week honors in his first series with the team. Quintana scored at least one run in all four games and drew three walks in the Sunday affair, one day after banging out five hits against the Colonels. An 11th-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, Quintana decided to put off his professional career to play collegiately for Arizona. So far, so good as the freshman has an on-base percentage of .700 on the young season.

More on Morimoto: A late addition to the 2016 recruiting class, it didn’t take long for Mitchell Morimoto to make an impact for the Wildcats. A transfer from Mesa Community College, Morimoto, originally from Issaquah, Wash-ington, went 7 for 16 with seven runs scored, one double and one home run in his first four games with the Cats. The junior started all four games and is batting .438. Morimoto batted leadoff on opening night and went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored. The next night, he went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, an RBI and two walks. In Sunday’s affair, he was 2 for 4 with three RBI, two runs scored and his home run. He then went 1 for 5 in the finale. Morimoto played both left field and designated hitter and struck out just once in 16 at-bats against Eastern Kentucky.

Matijevic the Masher: Entering the Eastern Kentucky series, it appeared junior first baseman JJ Matijevic was poised for a breakout season as an upperclassman. After all, the infielder was named Arizona Baseball’s Summer Player of the Year after a dominating summer in the Cape Cod League with the Falmouth Commodores. He also had a strong sophomore season and finished the season with a .287 average. He was third on the team with 17 doubles and drove in 37, while hitting four home runs. He slugged .411 and added 43 runs scored. And now it seems Mati-jevic is ready to take his hitting to the next level. The left-handed hitter went 9 for 19 the first four games of the season with four doubles, a home run and nine RBI. He also scored eight runs. His nine hits lead the Pac-12 and he’s also tied with teammate Cal Stevenson with eight runs scored. After going 1 for 4 with a run scored in the opener, Matijevic had multiple-hit games in his next three outings. He went 3 for 6 with five RBI on Saturday, 2 for 5 with three RBI, a double and a home run and then 3 for 4 with an RBI, two doubles and a pair of runs scored in the finale. He’s slugging .842 and has reached base at a .500 clip through four games.

Cloney Owns Opening Day: Senior left-hander JC Cloney made his second straight Opening Day start for the Wildcats last weekend against Eastern Kentucky. Last year, he starred in Arizona’s 8-1 season-opening victory over Rice. In his first start at Arizona, Cloney went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He struck out nine, didn’t issue a walk and needed just 88 pitches to earn the win. Cloney didn’t allow a run until the seventh inning and threw 65 of his 88 pitches for strikes. The victory marked Arizona’s first road Opening Day win since a 3-2 win at Hawaii Hilo to open the 2001 season. This season, he topped himself. Cloney went seven innings again, but didn’t surrender any runs or walks. He struck out six and needed just 74 pitches. He’s the first Arizona pitcher to win back-to-back opening day starts since Kurt Heyer won three straight from 2010-12. Cloney also extended his scoreless streak to 23 innings, dating back to last season. He twirled 16 scoreless innings at the College World Series, before his seven dominant innings last weekend against Eastern Kentucky.

At Home with JC: To say JC Cloney enjoys pitching at Hi Corbett would be a rather significant understatement. In seven career home starts, Cloney is 5-1 with a 1.15 ERA. In 47 innings, he’s allowed just 36 hits, nine runs and six earned runs. Perhaps even more impressive, Cloney has struck out 34 batters and has issued just four walks. Cloney has gone at least 6.2 innings in six of his seven starts at Hi Corbett and has never given up more than two earned runs in a home start. He has earned wins over Cal State Bakersfield, UCLA, Oregon State, Arizona State and Eastern Kentucky. He’s 3-0 in his last three starts, surrendering just two earned runs over 21 2/3 innings. He also hasn’t walked a hitter at home in his last four starts at Hi Corbett. The last walk he gave up at home came on March 24 of last season against UCLA.

Home at Hi Corbett: Hi Corbett Field proved to be the top home field advantage on the West Coast last year, and the Wildcats are eager to build on that in 2017. Last year, Arizona led all West Coast and Pac-12 schools, averaging 3,082 fans at home; the team’s highest total since moving to the historic ballpark. That total ranked 19th in the country and tops in the conference. Arizona drew a season-high 8,067 fans to the middle game of a three-game set against Arizona State. That total went down as the largest since Arizona moved to Hi Corbett. Arizona drew a total of 18,039 for the three-game series against the Sun Devils. In Coach Jay Johnson’s first season, Arizona went

23-7 at Hi Corbett and dropped just one series the entire season. The Cats are off to a 4-0 start this year at Hi Corbett Field and drew 3,716 fans to Hi Corbett on opening night.

Sling it, Ming: The postseason wasn’t kinder to any Arizona player last season than left-handed pitcher Cameron Ming. Now a junior, Ming entered the postseason last year with a 2-2 record, a 3.96 ERA and no saves. His final regular season stats? An ERA of 3.59, four saves and three wins. Ming was masterful in Arizona’s run to the College World Series Finals. He led the team with 10 postseason appearances and posted a 2.37 ERA in 19 innings. He gave up just 10 hits, struck out 18 and limited opposing batters to a .161 average. He also closed out four games after not registering a single save in the regular season. Ming allowed an earned run in his first postseason appearance against Sam Houston State, and then posted six straight scoreless appearances over Regional, Super Regional and College World Series play. An offseason sure didn’t stop Ming’s momentum at all. Ming made two appearances against the Colonels in the opening series and picked up a save and a win. He closed out Arizona’s win in Game 2 with 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three, while not allowing a hit or a walk. In Monday’s finale, Ming went three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three, while not issuing a walk. He earned the win in Arizona’s walk-off win. All total, he has six strikeouts in 4.1 innings, has given up just one hit and has opposing batters hit-ting .071 against him.

Sawyer Gieseke Productions: Senior Sawyer Gieseke brings a lot of on-field versatility to Arizona with his abil-ity to play all four infield positions, catcher and the outfield. Gieseke’s versatility off the field is equally impressive. The senior, who is majoring in Film and TV, has made a name for himself with several short videos he’s produced, directed and shot. His latest film was released this week and is a spoof on the 1989 movie, Major League. In just more than a week, Gieseke’s video received more than 340,000 views on YouTube and more than 250,000 views on Facebook. Gieseke served as an intern with Arizona Athletics’ Creative Services Department in the fall and shot several football and basketball games. Gieseke had a camera with him in the dugout last season to capture unprec-edented behind the scenes footage. Gieseke plans to have his camera with him again this year.

Francona Gives Back: University of Arizona alumnus and current Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona has committed $1 million to the Arizona baseball program. Francona's donation will be targeted for the baseball capital projects fund, which will include an indoor hitting facility that will be named the Terry Francona Hitting Facility. "Since I moved back to Tucson four years ago, it has been a priority of mine to give back to the University of Arizona," Francona said. "The reason I am doing this is because of the impact the University has had on my life. The people at the University of Arizona gave me an opportunity to go to the professional level, and not just survive, but be prepared. That's a big reason why I want to give back." Francona's donation comes in addition to a $1 mil-lion matching gift made by an anonymous donor in June for stadium capital improvements. More than $300,000 has already been matched towards this summer's gift, but there is still an opportunity to contribute towards the remaining $700,000. Fans can join the challenge to continue matching. The Wildcat Club has created a specific webpage with more information and a link to donate here: https://beardownchallenge.com/campaigns/arizona-baseball-match.

He went to Jared: Junior Jared Oliva will man centerfield for the Wildcats this season fresh off earning All-Tournament Team honors at the College World Series. Oliva hit the only home run for Arizona in Omaha and was second on the team with eight RBI. He started all eight games in center in Omaha and went 7 for 26 overall, while playing perfect defense. For the season, Oliva had seven triples, four home runs and 13 stolen bases to show off his combination of speed and power. In 217 at-bats last year, Oliva grounded into just one double play, once again showing off his speed. He also went the entire season without committing an error in center. He also hit .333 with the bases loaded last season. Now, the junior seems to have taken another step forward this season. Oliva went 8 for 19 in the opening series with three doubles, a home run and six RBI. He already has three doubles this season after having just four all of last season.

Fresh Faces: Arizona welcomes in 16 new additions to its roster this year. The new crop of players is a mix of nine transfers and seven high schoolers. Collegiate Baseball ranked Arizona’s incoming recruiting class No. 4 in the coun-try, while Baseball America slotted the Cats’ class in at No. 10. The class features six picks from June’s Major League Baseball Draft. Infielder Nicholas Quintana, the projected starter at third base, was the highest selection as the Boston Red Sox selected him in the 11th round. However, Quintana, the Nevada Gatorade State Player of the Year, turned down a chance to begin his professional career to attend Arizona and play for coach Jay Johnson. Cameron Cannon, a high school infielder from Glendale, was a 22nd round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Cory Voss, Cal Stevenson, Matt Fraizer and Shane Martinez were all selected after the 30th round.

Hail Cesar: Sophomore catcher Cesar Salazar will look to build on his freshman season this year as Arizona’s primary backstop. In his rookie season with Arizona, Salazar hit .276 with nine doubles and 28 RBI. He threw out 10 of 36 baserunners and showed promise as an asset defensively, both with his blocking ability and throwing arm. Salazar started 14 of Arizona’s 15 postseason games last season and had four multi-hit games in the postseason. The highlight of course was Salazar’s 3 for 6 night against Mississippi State in the Super Regional clincher. The catcher sent Arizona to its 17th College World Series with a walk-off hit in the 11th inning. Salazar also proved to be very difficult to strike out last season. He punched out just 24 times in 196 at-bats. Just two times did Salazar strike out twice in a game. The catcher was named to the Louisiana All-Regional team after starting all five regional games, including four games in two days. He had back-to-back two-hit games in elimination contests for the Wildcats in Lafayette and had three doubles in that span. Salazar went 5 for 12 against Eastern Kentucky, starting the first three games. He drove in four, had two doubles and struck out just once.
