The STM Boys Golf Team completed its season by

bringing home hardware for the first time ever at the

Class A State Tournament. The Cavaliers finished in

6th place at State, one stroke out of 5th place and seven

strokes out of 4th place. Henry O'Meara and Nick Lust

finished 11th and 12th in the State respectively. In

addition to the Top-6 finish at State, the golf team also

won the Black Hills Conference Championship for the

second consecutive year.

On October 14th, Senator John Thune stopped by the STM HS to speak with students about

what it means to be of excellent character. Thune stated that excellence has to do with follow

through, taking your God given abilities and making the most of them, as well as defining your

character through a life of character and commitment to a cause. The students received

Thune’s message well and were impressed with his ability to answer their questions and speak

in front of them.

Questions from students range from energy alternatives, Keystone Pipe-

line, the Ebola outbreak, what the biggest draw to South Dakota is

(Thune believes it is our wok ethic) and what to do with the new genera-

tion of voters who are struggling to identifying with a political party.

Thune’s advice is to vote, no matter what “just register to vote.”

Seasonal Flu Prevention Flu is a serious contagious disease. Each year in the United States, on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and 36,000 peo-

ple die from seasonal flu complications.

Flu-like symptoms include: Fever (usually high)

Headache

Extreme tiredness

Dry cough

Runny of stuffy nose

Muscle aches

Sore throat

Vomiting

Sometimes diarrhea

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy & Informed: Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through the coughing or sneezing of infected people. Take everyday actions to stay

healthy.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Avoid

touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. Stay home if you get sick. The Centers for Disease Control and prevention

recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures.

Find healthy way to deal with stress and anxiety.

Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of serious flu complication, including young children, pregnant women, people

with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart and lung disease, and people 65 years and older.

October is here along with the end of the first quarter of the school year. This has already been an amazing school with more to come. I wanted to thank everyone who was responsible for making Homecoming this year a huge success. First, the students who participated in all of the dress up days, having fun at the pep rallies and for their support at the game. Second our student council members who set up the week, the dance and our advisors who worked very hard in making sure everything ran smoothly. Finally our parents who helped with the Bonfire, and the food that was provided at the dance. The students had a great week and were very appreciative. Today we celebrated the Living Rosary and it was inspiring to say the least. I would like to invite all of our par-ents to celebrate mass with us. Please know that you are welcome anytime.

Good luck to the following as they are still in season: Our Knowledge Bowl team Boys and Girls Cross Country Competitive Dance and Cheer Volleyball as they enter the playoffs Football as they enter the playoffs All of our students who will be involved in the upcoming play St. Thomas More families, there are many ways that we as a school can earn money without having

fundraisers! I will list a few items that can earn money for our school that I am sure you are doing and do not even realize the potential of income for our school. They are:

Family Thrift receipts- for every $150,000 dollars of receipts our school receives $1,000. (We are

only $10,000 short of another $1,000!) Every top of “Land of Lakes Milk” is worth - $.05 Every “Our Family” up code is worth - $.05 Every “Box Top for Education” is worth - $.10

If you simply send in these items we will have groups such as “Student Council” and “National Honor Society” at our school adds them up and then we collect the monies for our school. It is that easy! We appreciate your support.

Sullivan’s Corner

The First Annual Bishop’s Golf Classic was hosted at the Arrowhead Country Club on September 18th.

RCCSS supported the event with two teams: Brandon Kandolin, Alex Kandolin, Megan Ward, and

Andy Shaw, and Steph Strand, Barb Honeycutt, Wayne Sullivan, Pat Honeycutt. Mrs. Honeycutt won

the competition for longest drive.

First Annual Bishops Golf Classic

Knowledge Bowl

Congratulations are in order for the STM High School and Middle School Knowledge Bowl

Teams. With the short season finished, the two high school teams were able to score second and fourth

in the Northern Division. The Middle School fielded only one team most meets, came in first in its cate-

gory, well ahead of all the other schools. The next goal is the regional competition at which the top nine

teams will compete on November 8th at Central High School.

National Merit Scholarship Qualifier

A big congratulations to Hanna Glissendorf for being awarded the Letter of

Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program. This award is for

outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test in 2013. Way to go Hanna!!

Student Response to the article

"C-SPAN Bus Rolls into Town, but Students Still Skeptical of

Political Process" by The Rapid City Journal

This piece is in direct response to the article "C-SPAN Bus Rolls into Town, but Students Still Skeptical of

Political Process" by The Rapid City Journal that was on the front page on Saturday, August 30. It was an

representation of those who were interviewed and—more importantly—the student body as a whole. We

know for a fact that the student body of St. Thomas More High School is more interested in the political

process than what was printed in The Rapid City Journal. The AP Government class decided to prove this

point by surveying 220 students using questions that would help gauge the interest of the student body in

politics.

The results of our survey were astounding. 92 percent of the students surveyed plan on voting when

they turn eighteen. In addition, 74 percent of students discuss political issues with friends and/or family, and

88 percent follow current events through various news outlets. The survey also included questions concerning

the article itself. Of the 26 percent of students that read the article in The Rapid City Journal, 97 percent had a

negative opinion of the article, and 98 percent believed that it was an inaccurate portrayal of students at St.

Thomas More High School.

The results of this survey speak volumes. We wanted to convey these findings to the parents and staff

that support St. Thomas More High School in order to reassure you that students are interested in the political

process. Students are learning a great deal about politics and modern issues at school and want to have an

influence in the future by exercising the right to vote and impacting society through different career choices.

The future of the political process is in good, capable hands.

A group of 15 students from France, along with one chaperon will be coming to the

Black Hills for a four-week stay next June and July. They will each need a host family

and it would be great if several of those families were RCCSS families. In 2012 a

group of students did a home-stay here and several host families, including Barb

Honeycutt, were from our school system.

The students all want to improve their English, so knowing French is not a requirement

of the host families. Families need to provide room and board and hospitality. Stu-

dents will have their own spending money and insurance. They are 14-16 years old.

Please consider helping out, either by hosting or by spreading the word to other fami-

lies in the community who might be interested. Families can be from surrounding

towns as well. It is a wonderful experience -- sharing your culture and learning about

another culture are both very rewarding and contribute to global understanding.

Please contact me if you or someone you know might be interested in hosting or would

at least like more information.

Viewing the account online is free of charge. However, if you are making a deposit online there is a $1.95 service

fee per deposit.

You may make one deposit and divide the amount between all students in your household from Elementary to High

School.

Each student will have his/her own account and will not share a balance with siblings.

If you are paying by check or cash to the school please be aware that lunch payments may not be combined with

other school payments in the same check. It will be very important for you to note on the check the name of the

student and how you would like the money divided between siblings.

Class and Book Fees are due. Please note on your check the student name and fee you are paying. You can deliver it to the school office, mail the check, or drop it off at the Business Office. Thanks for your assistance.

Library Corner

The Rapid City Catholic School System Libraries are so happy to be able to

offer 48 new books on Saints and other topics that can be used in religion

classes. Working in collaboration with the religion teachers, the library

choose age appropriate books that can be utilized in the k-12 classroom. Of

the 29 books that will be at the St. Thomas More Middle School and High

School campuses, 28 books are chapter book biographies on Saints and one

is an art book filled with paintings of Saints. The 19 books for the St. Elizabeth Seton Library include books

on Saints, first communion, and new illustrated Bibles. All 48 books will be available to students at all three

campuses.

These new books were made possible by generous donations by parents and other stakeholders during the

magazine sales held at the Elementary School and Middle School in the month of September. We are so

blessed by this generosity and incredibly grateful to all of the donors who made this purchase possible. Thank
